power of visualization (story of dog’s tooth as Buddha’s tooth)

Preliminaries (ritual with a few explanations)

…OK, but it works. Since it’s important, I’ll tell you, the Tibetan trader, the business man who goes to India all the time to buy, do some trade. He goes very often to India and he asks his mother, “Do you want anything from India?” Mother always says, “No, no, no.” Finally, mother said one day, “Yes, son, I want something from India. Can you do it?” And he said, “Sure, anything mother. Whatever you want, I bring from India.” He was thinking, you know, - mother said then, “Please bring me a teeth of Buddha.” She wanted a tooth of Buddha. He said, “Oh yeah, sure, sure. I’ll bring it,” not knowing what he’s saying, right? So he goes to India, he forgets. He goes back to Tibet and mother asks, - OK. Oh, I mean, he can’t say, “I forgot,” to mother. He says,“Yes, I couldn’t get it but I was looking around and getting it next time.” OK. He goes next time, comes back. He forgets. Asks mother. Next time. Next time, next time, three or four times left. Finally one day when he comes back he said, “Yes, yes. I have already paid the money. I have ordered already.” He thinks Buddha’s tooth he can buy somewhere, you know. He said, “I already paid the money and money was paid but he has not delivered to me yet. So, next time for sure he’ll be doing it.” That’s what he told the mother.

So next time he went again and when he coming back, he couldn’t get Buddha’s teeth, right? So when he was riding a horse coming closer to Lhasa and he thought about it, what to do now. So he look around and he found a dead body of dog. He got an idea. He got off the horse, started cutting the dog’s mouth out and take out one piece of tooth and he rubbed it with different stones and made very smooth; polished it smooth. And then get five different colored … silk and he wrapped them as though it’s something very precious, you know, wrapped them and put a little silver box and that also wrapped in silk and he carried at back and went.

So the mother also knew that he’s bringing something and so she also - she’s wondering and she asked somebody to go and find out whether the son has brought this Buddha’s tooth. And he said oh yes, yes, yes. He’s bringing on the back.” So the mother says, “Please don’t come in the house right now.” So she cleaned the house first, painted the house and then, you know, carried the incense, put banners outside, and finally, you know, she prostrated toward where he’s brining thing. So with incense gradually she brought them in the house. And she carried that tooth up and put it right at the center of the altar. And she had been praying that every day. The son knows it is a dog’s tooth. Mother doesn’t know. Mother is thinking it is the Buddha’s tooth and she has been praying for it. And she kept on praying for years together and son knew but he won’t say, right? He will not say anything.

So one time, when he went out and he was coming in, the mother was so happy and saying, “Son, you are really great and I am really grateful to you. That tooth of the Buddha what you brought in is such a fantastic. It started giving relics.” You know, they give relics, the white litte relics, and a lot of them started dripping and she collected them in the plate and she can show the son that she could do that. So son got shocked. He said, “How can that be possible?” She said, “Yes. Believe me. These came.” He could even see it. One of the white thing is coming out of little piece, corner of little piece. He could even see it. It started dripping. By dripping, little relics coming out.

So how to explain that? Actually a dog’s tooth, but she had faith of being Buddha’s tooth. Whether Buddha’s or not, total enlightened beings - you know, why this enlightened beings? Why, you know in the Western - let me call it normal Western language, gods. Or if you call it Hindi words, lets call it bhagavan. It’s a little easier, you know? [LAUGHS] Bhagavans; enlightened beings. Why - what is their job? Their work is, they’re totally concerned how to help anybody. They want to help all living beings. They cannot leave a single person out. They want to help anybody, whatever the manner they can. So wherever they have opportunity and chance, they are there to help them. So when the mother had such a faith that I’m praying to the enlightened ones, the enlightened one’s teeth, though in reality it may not be, it might have been a dog’s, but in her own faith and she had that as being enlightened ones. So actually the enlightened beings do appear there and they will take their shape and they will function that way, though it may not be. But the person whoever does that, gets the benefit of that. That’s why the dog’s tooth started dripping relics.

So,

these things are all guru devotion, or anything. All these are do not depend on the person other side but on the person this side. All this depends on this side. So whatever you from your angle you can put efforts, that much benefit you can get. Your effort from your angle, you put good efforts of enlightened beings, OK you get benefit of enlightened beings. From your angle you put efforts of being a dog, you get blessing of dog. That’s it. So very simple as this. OK. You get me?

It is almost psychological thing, really, though I don’t know anything about psychology so I am no authority to say. However, persons minds are such a thing, if the person has been suggested there is enlightened beings and enlightened beings are their blessing this and that, then you get it. But you know, if person, nothing wrong, but if that person, somebody goes on say, “hey, you’re sick, you’re sick, you’re sick. You need treatment, you need therapy, you need this, you need this, you need that, that, that,” the person maybe think, “I may be sick.” You know, maybe nothing wrong with him but he gets it because it been suggested to him, mind. You know better than I do because I’ve never been to any therapist at all. But it seems in the - it seems to be very famous in Holland, all the different therapies. But, but, but, but - in reality nothing’s wrong with you, I’ll tell you, nothing’s wrong with you. Every human being has its own - as long as you’re not gone crazy, nothings wrong with you. Little bit of craziness everybody has. [LAUGHS] Don’t count that as crazy. Anyway, I’m just joking. So,

It is really, particularly in vajrayana, the visualization and all this are very much counted, very much counted, because it gives chance to those enlightened beings are able to work it. You get me? So anyway now, I’m talking too much beyond the point. So I let - whatever I said, I let Helen to translate and after that we may skip the translation. Is it possible?

Thank you. I want to make clear again, when I say you have to visualize vajra master as Avalokiteshvara, I am not saying I am a great being. Please, don’t misunderstand. I’m an ordinary human being. I’d rather be an ordinary human being, OK? [LAUGHS] I’m not saying that. But, whatever’s happening during this period, you have to think it was going through the - you know, I been channelized today. I been channelized so therefore you should think it is not me who is doing it Avalokiteshvara who’s doing it. You understand? So don’t think - I’m not saying that I am somebody greater. Please do not misunderstand. Sometimes people do get a lot of misunderstanding. I’m not saying I’m Avalokiteshvara OK. I’m an ordinary human being so please look me as an ordinary human being and don’t think as faultless, pure something, OK? Forget about it. But whatever is going on, visualize it’s going through Avalokiteshvara. That’s what I mean, OK?

OK. Now the next is I have to tell you to generate the mind. That is not me. The Avalokiteshvara tells here,

Now those, those, they said, those of few who would like to enter into the mandala is who would like to accumulate good merit and who would like to have permanent happiness. Some of them want different happiness, who are seeking happiness of this life, some are simply seeking power in this life, different power. You do get power. You don’t have to seek. Power will come. If you seek for the power only, then you wasted. That’s why it’s saying here, seeking power or just seeking a better future life only, so these are - there are actually three different minds, OK?

One would like to enter into the mandala because … because they would like to have better future life so therefore I could enter into the mandala and do this. Some not even have the - number two who doesn’t even have the mind of entering better future life but they would like to have some power of doing and power this and power that and this and that and for that I would like to enter mandala. The third person says I would like to obtain the ultimate enlightenment. For this, I would like to obtain the mandala. So the first two are not correct and so it says, don’t do it. And if you do it for the first two purposes, that is seeking power and just better future life, you wasted. Such a great method be wasted. So no use. He said, don’t do it.

But if your seeking for total enlightenment, all other things will totally come. Don’t have to seek for it, it will come. So, it is worth for it to doing it. So that’s what Avalokiteshvara tells you. So after this brief translation then I will say the word, you visualize (those who are doing visualization), they visualize Avalokiteshvara tells you from the mandala.

Now, next is generating … yourself into the form of Avalokiteshvara (those who are entering the mandala, you can generate yourself in the form of Avalokiteshvara). That when I say the mantra of [??] DO NE TAKJE HUNG PHAT [??], so then you dissolve yourself. DO NE TAKJE HUNG PHAT means from the heart of - from the mandala of the Lama Avalokiteshvara then thousand of wrathful deities comes and all the evil disturbance through your body, through your skin, through your flesh, through your bones, and the liquid in the body, whatever they are been sent away a million miles away. And then dissolve yourself into the nature of emptiness. From the emptiness you rise in the form of Avalokiteshvara with one face, two hands and … with no implements and ornaments.

OK, after this brief translation I will say the ritual.

So the great owner of the liberation, great bliss owner, I may be given the ultimate enlightenment and I may be given bodhicitta, I may be given the protection of buddha, dharma and sangha, I may be enjoy into the siddhi of liberation and siddhi of happiness. Briefly, that is what request will be and you will be repeating after me after the brief translation.

OK. By making that request, now you visualize Lama Avalokiteshvara from the mandala has called you son. “Son come here.” [0:24:18 TIBETAN] “Son come here. I will show you the great path of mahayana and that of vajrayana. You will be fit to practice the body, speech, mind of the vajra. Buddhas of the past and present and future, such as Shakyamuni, etc., have conquered the evil and all other non-virtuous forces and finally obtained total liberation, helped people, and ultimately passed in the maha-pari-nirvana. They have done through this practice and if you - so therefore, I will show you this path so son, you can also follow this path.” That’s what it is.

You visualize Lama Avalokiteshvara. Avalokiteshvara told you from the mandala this. And a brief translation.

With this we have taken the vows. But today, this vow takings are not that necessary and careful. From tomorrow - tomorrow it will be much more important, so therefore, tomorrow we have to be more careful for taking the vows. Today is OK so with this we’ll be completed.

So now next is blessing. Now blessing is you have to visualize: those of you who are in the Avalokiteshvara form, you have to visualize at your heart a black vajra, five-spoke black vajra which has - this is vajra. OK, this is vajra. Five-spoke black vajra at hour heart. At the navel of this you have a sun disk and a black, hmm. OK. (Just go ahead. Do that first.)

Now since today we don’t have time so please do visualize, but what you visualize, not visualize touching but visualize a duplicate thing comes from the heart of Lama Avalokiteshvara, from the throat of Lama Avalokiteshvara, from the crown of Lama Avalokiteshvara and dissolve to your heart and throat and crown.

Now next is fourth. Fourth is throwing the wooden stick. Wooden stick. Wooden stick. (INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SIDE: Yeah. You have to put on the tray. On the tray.)

Throw a wooden stick in the front of the Lama mandala. And this stick, when you throw the stick, the reason why throwing the stick is to check what kind of fortune do you have to be able to obtain what siddhihood. So, when you throw the stick, hold the stick in-between the two hands together and without any hesitation and repeat mantra after me and throw. Particularly today, I’m not going to have everybody get up. It’s going to take a long time. Everybody will be represented. Will be represented Helen are here as the study group and Bhagavani here will represent from the Institute. So only two. I’m sorry. [LAUGHS] Tomorrow we’ll have more time. When you offer the flower to the mandala we’ll do detailedly. But today, we’re making short.

So those who are throwing actually standing here, you should not think that whatever I’m going to get it. But you should also think for all these people here I’m representing, so whatever the majority will have chance, opportunity so it may be shown. So then, with this, you throw. OK? So first, Helena.

If you work hard everybody be able to obtain ultimate, ultimate, ultimate within this lifetime. OK? Ultimate within this lifetime. Be very happy about it. OK.

Now next is I have to give you water. By giving you water … [PAUSE] so when you give (no, no, no. the other vase. I’m sorry. Be careful ok. Don’t push mandala. Do you have any more kettles? How many more kettles you have? Only one kettle?

RIMPOCHE: Only one kettle? You don’t have any more kettles at all?

RIMPOCHE: Please bring it. No matter how many kettles you have - all different - coffee pots and whatever you have. [LAUGHS] Please. And with some water in it OK?]

The reason why kusha grass is the traditional Indian culture background. The Indian brahmins - you know Buddhism came from India so they got a lot of Indian influence. Don’t forget about it, OK? So, the Indian brahmins used the kusha as material for purification. You know the brahmins, if they feel they have become dirty and unpure, even they go in the fields of the kusha grass. They sleep at night. They think it purifies. So it is Indian culture background, but here we generate through mantra. So we give you two kushas: one long one and one short one. The long one you put under your bed tonight and short one you put under the pillow and hopefully you get some good dreams. [LAUGHTER]

Now next is the protection thread. The protection thread will be given, will be generated through the mantra of Buddha Maitreya. OM BUDDHA MAITREYA [INDECIPHERABLE] SOHA. This is the mantra. Why Buddha Maitreya? Maitreya has two reasons. Number one, Maitreya is love and compassion. Maitreya is jampa, jampa is Maitreya. So the protection of the love is the best. Therefore, through Maitreya. Another way, Maitreya is next Buddha so until Maitreya comes you’ll be protected. With these two reasons we give you this protection thread which you kindly tie at your left hand.

“In this world the enlightened beings sometimes can appear, sometimes do not appear. It is like magical flower.”

So it is once in a blue moon the enlightened beings are appeared.

And when they appeared, they does great work for all the sentient beings and ultimately they passed away. Themself also passed away.

So but vajrayana practice is even rarer than that.

OK. So, those who have created tremendous amount of - accumulated tremendous amount of bad karma before, by looking at this mantra, all your bad karmas are going to be purified.

And that is true and that is what enlightened Buddha has said.

And if that’s true, then if you practice - just looking at mandala if you purify everything, if that’s true, then when you practice it and then you have no doubt that you will be proper and purely developed.

OK. So by practicing this, there is no doubt. Question does not rise whether you will be able to obtain ultimate enlightenment or not. So therefore, if you’re intelligent, then in order to get rid of all your suffering with cause of sufferings and so the great personality like you have found today what you found is equivalentless.

OK. So therefore, whatever you have found today is a great equivalentless. You can never find. Never, never find such an opportunity so therefore, it is to be protected, to be properly carried out and properly practiced and you will obtain ultimate enlightenment. You yourself will become ultimate buddha, or tathagata.

So please tonight use the long kusha under the bed and short kusha under the pillow and visualize that you are sleeping - your facing your face, I mean your head was showing towards east. Either your showing then it’s correct. If you’re not showing, if your bed is facing west or north or something like that, then visualize that you’re facing towards east. That also towards this mandala direction. So with this visualization do kindly go to sleep and then try to remember what dreams you get tomorrow. So tell me what dreams you get tomorrow, Ok?

Another thing is, when you do such a great work like this, though we have given you protection and all this, still there is a possibility of evil attacking. Why? Because when you do something good and then that much disturbance are becoming strong because they want to harm you and pull you down because they’re mean and their world is that. So you need further protection. For further protection with the protection realm and all this, even then if you have some problems, nightmares or anything of such fearful things, then I have to give you a mantra. But before I give you the mantra, to purify you once again, so therefore, do kindly visualize from the mandala wrathful deities have come and drive away all the possibility of evil spirits.

OK with this we have completed all the preliminary today. Do kindly make a short mandala offering for thanking and after that there’s some announcement to be made and if there is coffee to enjoy. Announcements will be made after the mandala.
