Evening everybody. Dutch translation Very happy to be back in the Nijmegen area. Dutch translation The subject of the talk tonight as well as the workshop for next two days is basically- it's going to be the Buddha’s personal experience of dealing with life and taking the important advantages out of our precious human life which is capable of delivering whatever the needs we have whether it's material or spiritual. 0:01:31.5 Dutch translation

We are all human beings. Dutch translation We all have good and bad feelings. Dutch translation And we all have precious life. Dutch translation And we also have a wonderful nature of human beings. 0:02:27.1 Dutch translation Kindness, Dutch translation compassionate Dutch translation, it is very much with all of us and particularly in the West, the West people. Particularly the Western people shows the compassion, expresses much more than anybody else, really. 0:03:05.1 Dutch translation And also we show the pains and sufferings and discomfort also more than anybody else too. [Laughter]. 0:03:24.0 Dutch translation

First I’d like to say because basically, wonderful nature of human being within us, that’s why whenever you see people are suffering, they will always show the compassion which is the clear sign there is a wonderful nature of being inside because when you see suffering, you can feel it and you can try to help and that is the clear signal that we have wonderfulness within us. 0:04:03.4 Dutch translation

It was 1959 when I’ve been kicked out of Tibet by the thing. When I reached to India- you know like a month-long journey through the Himalaya and sometimes even cutting across the huge snow peak through, like a little over a month or so, and I came to Indian territory without any food or without any extra clothes or without anything. But when I reached the Indian territory, there’s a group of people who are giving some kind of warmth, food or soup or tea or vitamins and a piece of cloth and all these and they give it to you and you really appreciate. And they're very helpful when you are at the receiving end and this is the kindness and the compassion showed from the Western people from Europe or United States or all these, to the Tibetans in 1959 so I have that personal experience.

So what does that give me? It’s two things. One, even we don’t know anybody in the West, but people know these Tibetans are suffering and coming through the Himalayas and your kindness you start giving them, and I think very helpful. Second, I also take opportunity to thank you all. Maybe you yourself is not the person at that time but I’d like to express my thanks, I always do anyway. [Laughter] 0:06:34.5 Dutch translation

But you don’t always- do we always show kindness and compassion to everybody? We all know we don’t. 0:08:33.8 Dutch translation We always, when we deal with our friends and companions and all these, we always give a cold shoulder very often, don’t we? 0:08:53.1 Dutch translation But that doesn’t mean we don’t have a nice and kind human nature within us. We do. 0:09:08.4 Dutch translation But we don’t share that with others, we share cold shoulder. 0:09:19.1 Dutch translation And that’s why we always- again especially if we [?] we always give some difficulties with the family, companions, children, all this. 0:09:39.9 Dutch translation Why? Dutch translation Simply we have tremendous amount of negative emotions, very often. We rise with tremendous amount of negative emotions and these negative emotions will block the wonderful nature of a human being inside so even you wanted to share something nice of your quality with family friend, companion, girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever it may be, but very often, it comes out the other way round rather than nice way. It’s all because of the negative emotions and we don’t have control over them, they come by their own. 0:10:50.2 Dutch translation

So Buddha, what did Buddha do? Buddha experienced exactly same thing what we experience. 0:11:25.6 Dutch translation And the Buddha also finds way how we can get free from those. 0:11:39.7 Dutch translation You know the Buddha’s teaching, or Buddhism, whatever you call it, Tibetan Buddhism. I'm talking to you from the background of the Tibetan Buddhism because that’s the only thing I know. 0:12:00.9 Dutch translation So what does Buddha really did? Buddha really did his- Buddha really tried to, you know, Buddha experienced all the difficulties and sufferings that we experience. 0:12:26.1 Dutch translation And he looked for solutions, how he can help 0:12:39.3 Dutch translation and is there a way out? 0:12:45.4 Dutch translation Because everybody suffers tremendously- physically or mentally or emotionally, we have constant suffering though in the West, life is such great, wonderful and it’s a developed nation and whatever, you know, all these advantages we count. However, no matter how much we count advantages, we also equally have that much suffering too. 0:13:18.1 Dutch translation

So Buddha called that as the truth of suffering. 0:13:46.7 Dutch translation Because that is what he discovered when he began to look at the life. 0:13:55.2 Dutch translation So he called that truth of suffering. Dutch translation And you know number of the people that told me- you know, when I meet people through the aeroplane or the airport or something, some people will say ‘Where are you from?’, ‘Are you Chinese or Japanese or something?’ and I say ‘Tibetan’. So then they say ‘Oh you’re Tibetan. What do you do?’ then I say ‘I teach Buddhism’, they say ‘Oh yeah, that is the religion of suffering’. [Laughter] 0:14:41.7 Dutch translation And it's not the religion of suffering. Dutch translation But it’s the discovery of truth of our life. 0:15:20.0 Dutch translation

The point why Buddha introduced the truth of suffering as first truth. 0:15:35.3 Dutch translation Not because to get credit, Dutch translation but to be recognised Dutch translation and not only to be recognised. Recognition is extremely important. 0:16:02.3 Dutch translation If you recognise, if you acknowledge our suffering, you can always do something about that. 0:16:16.2 Dutch translation If you keep on denying, there’s nothing you can do. Dutch translation Buddha not only discovered the suffering that we have within us, but also discovered that we don’t have freedom on that. 0:16:45.4 Dutch translation and when I normally say we don't have freedom, people will think ‘Who is he- the Tibetan who’s been kicked out of his own country- tell us ‘you don’t have freedom’. We have all political freedom whatever you want to’. 0:17:16.5 Dutch translation But we’re not about talking political freedom at all. Dutch translation

We’re talking about freedom in life. Dutch translation We’re talking about freedom from our negative emotions. Dutch translation We’re talking about freedom from our anger. Dutch translation We’re talking about freedom from attachment. Dutch translation And that’s what we’re talking about. Dutch translation And we don’t really have freedom from anger, nor we have freedom from attachment because we get all these fits of attachment, fits of anger, fits, we all know that. 0:18:29.1 Dutch translation That’s why Buddha’s first solution to our problem is seeking freedom. 0:18:52.7 Dutch translation You definitely can get freedom from there. Dutch translation And Buddha discovered we do have suffering but suffering is not everlasting, permanent suffering. 0:19:17.1 Dutch translation There’s always a way out. Dutch translation And that’s Buddha’s discovery. Dutch translation

And way out is dealing with cause of the suffering. 0:19:41.9 Dutch translation I don’t think Buddha is allopathic doctor but I think he had become homeopathic. 0:19:57.1 Dutch translation Because he doesn’t treat symptoms but he thinks we should treat the cause. 0:20:13.0 Dutch translation Simple reason: if you treat the symptoms only, you keep on treating the symptoms and you will continuously building the cause so there will be no end to it. 0:20:28.9 Dutch translation Instead, if you treat the cause, the cause will stop. When the cause stops, the result will stop. 0:20:46.9 Dutch translation So the moment Buddha says there’s a way out, so he looked for the way out. Dutch translation His discovery of the way out is finding the cause and effects what we call it karmic system. Dutch translation

So how did he find out? How did he founded this? He found all our sufferings are result of our negative actions. 0:21:43.5 Dutch translation Which is true, right? If you have a negative action, you’re bound to get a negative result. 0:21:59.1 Dutch translation Even we know, we don’t need Buddha to tell. Dutch translation But the real thing is the negative actions that we take- why do we take negative actions? Why do we indulge in the negative actions? 0:22:27.7 Dutch translation Not because we’re bad Dutch translation but because we have those negative emotions. Dutch translation These negative emotions make us do negative things. 0:22:50.8 Dutch translation Sometimes we know among the people, ourself, friends, dear, near ones, we know they shouldn’t do that, they know, you know, everybody know but they can’t help it right? 0:23:07.2 Dutch translation So that is because of the negative emotion. Dutch translation And we don’t have much control over that. Dutch translation And Buddha recognised these negative emotions such as anger, such as jealousy, or attachment, all of them, are the cause of negative actions which in turn, cause all our problems. 0:23:55.3 Dutch translation

So these negative actions and negative thoughts are not as our nature. Our nature is wonderful. Wonderfulness of nature, kindness, compassionate, wonderful yet those negatives are also comes with us so it is some kind of temporary thing that comes in not in our natural. It is naturally born but it is not our nature. Our nature is wonderful and kind but we have those unwanted emotions and their consequences within us. 0:25:00.6 Dutch translation So to really embrace the real nature of wonderful human beings is we have to somehow remove those negative emotions such as when you want to eat a good tangerine, you can’t eat with skin together, it will become bitter. Though some people like it but what you’re really supposed to do is remove the skin and enjoy the tangerine inside, in it. Likewise, when you embrace the human life as the wonderful human being, try to separate those negative emotions and separate them, remove them and peel them off and embrace the real, nice, wonderful human nature and recognise, acknowledge, remain and maintain functioning within us and that is one of the steps. 0:26:40.7 Dutch translation

So in order to remove or peel off those negative emotions, it is important to recognise them. 0:27:37.5 Dutch translation If you don’t recognise them, you can’t peel off. Dutch translation So how do we recognise those negative emotions? Who is who and what is what? 0:27:59.5 Dutch translation We have so many of them inside anyway. Dutch translation So what really Buddha did is Buddha gave very strong description of knowing, introducing anger, though we don’t need introduction but in order to recognise we need to acknowledge and recognise. Buddha strongly introduced how does anger rises, anger functions, what is the consequences of anger. All these. 0:28:41.2 Dutch translation

To give you a little example, let's say by chance we have a nice good night’s sleep. Dutch translation And wake up in the morning very nice, fresh, Dutch translation happy, Dutch translation looking forward for the progress of the day Dutch translation and maybe you will swing round and got out 0:29:46.2 Dutch translation and you drive your car Dutch translation and the person before you don’t go. Dutch translation Continuously stay at the red light Dutch translation and you’re stuck there. Dutch translation So you think your time’s getting late. 0:30:14.9 Dutch translation You probably lose your parking place Dutch translation and so you started honking Dutch translation and persistent, doesn’t move Dutch translation then what you will do? Dutch translation We get upset. 0:30:38.9 Dutch translation You probably yelling, right? 0:30:41.8 Dutch translation

So that is a funny joke but what happens is, when that sort of thing happens, at that moment, if you watch your mind, you have lost something. 0:31:00.2 Dutch translation What you lost is- I’m not going to say you lost your temper, don’t think of that [Laughter]- but what you really lost is the clean, nice and clear and wonderful feeling, looking forward, joy state, is gone. 0:31:34.4 Dutch translation Suppose your joy is like a nice clean glass of water. By the time you lost your temper it looks like you wash your hand in there and becomes mushy, moody. 0:32:03.3 Dutch translation That’s how negative emotions take the wonderfulness from us 0:32:24.8 Dutch translation Do you see it? Dutch translation There’s no response. [Laughter]

Audience: I see too much.

Rimpoche: You see too much? That’s fine. But the point is the all happening within ourself. Dutch translation And sometimes, this is very simple. Small one. But sometimes, the mound which is overtaking is so strong and so huge, the huge monster that comes over us. We can’t help it, become helpless. 0:33:32.3 Dutch translation Don’t let me tell you, you know it yourself. Dutch translation It becomes huge monster, you can’t help it. Dutch translation You know how many times we have noticed either ourself or our friends sitting in the dark room and close the window and sitting with the long face and you say ‘What’s the matter?’, he says ‘I don’t want to talk about it.’ 0:34:18.0 Dutch translation These are the true examples how negative emotions using ourself as a slave. Dutch translation

So when you say ‘handle with negative emotions’, ‘work with negative emotions’, really meaning how we can get relief from those pains. Dutch translation and that's what’s all about embracing human life, embracing human quality. Dutch translation It’s not human nature, human nature is wonderful nature. Human nature is not anger, not attachment, no symptoms of attachment or anger, no fits of attachment or anger at all. 0:35:53.5 Dutch translation Then why we have all these attacks all the time? Dutch translation Because we are addicted for it. Dutch translation I’m the believer of reincarnation. Dutch translation If I don’t, I lose my title. [Laughter] Dutch translation I’ll be out of job. Dutch translation Stuck in the Nijmegen street. [Laughter] Dutch translation I’m just joking but I’m really a believer of reincarnation which is life after life. Dutch translation

When I say we are addicted, we are not talking about small addictions that we talk about- alcohol, cigarettes or drugs- we are not talking about that. This is a bigger addiction, tremendous amount of addiction for long time, for life after life we do the same thing. 0:37:34.9 Dutch translation One of the reasons, how do we know we have this? And if you look at the kids, the young kids- I’m not talking about 5 or 6 or 12, maybe 10 or 11 I’m not sure. But you know, when you look at those kids and you say ‘Well the kids should not hear what we talk about’. You know, ‘They shouldn’t see this picture’. Should not see about it, should not talk about it and you like to hide from the kids. Let’s say there’s a Playboy magazine or something, you try to hide from the kids right? And there’s some interesting, juicy television program you try to hide from the kids. You push them in the back or something. Whatever you do. But then you will be surprised tomorrow they know more than you do. 0:39:06.8 Dutch translation

That’s because they have better experience than we do at least in previous lives. Dutch translation I really truly see because addictions and experiences what they had, they carry without any money, don’t have to put any efforts in there. You don’t have to go to school to learn how to get angry. Dutch translation Because we are addicted. Dutch translation

Sometimes, I admire the therapists, very good. I admire the therapists because they been very helpful for lot of people. You know some therapists they give you therapy and it's very helpful. Dutch translation And sometimes they will say ‘We need to get to the bottom of the cause of the trouble’. Dutch translation And then go on talking about it, talking about it, ‘Are you afraid of something?’, ‘Are you doing this?’, ‘What did you do in your childhood?’, ‘What happened?’ and all sorts of things goes on and after a little while they go ‘I don’t really remember much about it but I’m always afraid of bearded guy’. 0:41:41.2 Dutch translation And then the first question, they said ‘Do you have a bearded guy in your family? Is your father have beard’. Dutch translation ‘No, all of my uncles have beard’. Dutch translation So ‘Oh yeah, here you go, this is the culprit. Your uncle must have molested you when you are, whatever, 6 or 7, whatever it is.’ Dutch translation And I’m not talking about all the therapists. Some are good, there are some bad ones. This is the discovery of all your trouble here. Dutch translation Some are right, some are wrong. 0:43:10.9 Dutch translation Is that the bottom of your problem? Dutch translation No. Dutch translation

If you want to get to the bottom of your problem, you have to go your previous lives. Dutch translation We have been carrying these addictions for life after life, mind you, for really, I almost can say thousands of years. Dutch translation So what is the real cause of those problems are basically really those anger, attachment, hatred, and particularly ignorance. Dutch translation And that is the Buddha’s therapy. 0:44:16.7 Dutch translation Yeah, really, that’s how it is. The ignorance and anger, attachment, you addicted for lives and this is the cause of our trouble. Dutch translation Whether our uncle has beard or not beard, it goes on but can’t say no can’t say yes, you never know but however, the cause is really the delusions within us for years, lives. Dutch translation So these addictions are not easy to get rid of. Dutch translation It takes time. Dutch translation It needs efforts. Dutch translation It needs to know how to handle it. Dutch translation It also needs merit. 0:45:30.8 Dutch translation It also needs wisdom. Dutch translation

And when you can combine all of them together, it works. Dutch translation And it worked for Buddha. Dutch translation It worked for the number of spiritual masters whether its Eastern tradition or Judeo-Christian, Western tradition, whatever it might be. 0:45:58.8 Dutch translation And there’s no reason why it doesn’t work with us. Dutch translation What is wrong with us? Nothing. Dutch translation We have a great mind, we have a wonderful human quality. Dutch translation We simply lack of techniques and efforts and willingness. 0:46:31.6 Dutch translation And the message of the Buddha, how to embrace human life, carries this method. Dutch translation

When we hear that message with the people, we’re not here to change your religion and we not here to do it. But the techniques and the method of the possible experience of the Buddha, how to deal with this problem- what’s wrong with that? 0:47:18.4 Dutch translation It helps. Dutch translation And it cuts down the negativity. Dutch translation It helps. Dutch translation It make a difference in people’s life. Dutch translation Why do you think the people in Jewel Heart is stuck with Jewel Heart. 0:47:47.9 Dutch translation Whether it’s in America or it’s in Netherlands or whether it’s in Southeast Asia or whatever it is. Dutch translation Not because we have money to give it. Dutch translation Nor because we mesmerise you. Dutch translation But because it make difference in their life. Dutch translation That’s why they’re stuck. Dutch translation I shouldn’t use the word stuck. They like to be there. [Laughter] Dutch translation And I’m helping, if that helps a little bit. Dutch translation So that’s how it works. Dutch translation And it makes difference in life. 0:48:48.4 Dutch translation

Ok when I say this, I’m not here to recruit in Jewel Heart. Don’t misunderstand, okay. Dutch translation We don’t propagate or whatever you call those. I’m not a newscaster or anything. Dutch translation So simply I’m telling you the truth. 0:49:21.9 Dutch translation I’m using as an example how it makes difference. People become kinder, people become nicer, people become a little gentle. Dutch translation So that’s how we make difference in our life. Dutch translation So anyway I don’t want talk very long on this and since it’s supposed to be two days, I’m supposed to do a workshop on that. That is tomorrow and day after tomorrow. 0:50:05.7 Dutch translation What we’ll do in there- we’ll go through each one of those negativities and how they feel with individuals, try to recognise them, and all these is what we’re going to do for whatever it takes- a day or two. Dutch translation And we’ll share a little bit of experience on how we deal each one of them. Dutch translation

Actually, the essence of the 0:50:58.4 [??] through a meditative way but the point is the essence of the Buddhism, the Buddha’s way, is actually dealing with life. Dutch translation Of course there is meditation and meditative way of doing and all these and that. Dutch translation But the bottom line is truly, truly dealing with life everyday, whatever you do, whether you’re sitting at home with family or busy walking round in the middle of the market or whatever you’re doing, working in your office or whatever it is, making a difference is the essence of the Buddhism. 0:52:01.0 Dutch translation And that is the main thing. Dutch translation

And then meditating and saying mantras and doing prayers and all these are the- to achieve that result, method to try and help you to get that. Dutch translation So more important is making difference in your mind and personality and dealing better through whatever ways it takes. Dutch translation Not the other way round. Dutch translation You know sometimes, some people would like to say ‘I’m a meditator and I pray’ and you know, ‘I’m different than you, I’m better’. And so it becomes ego-boosting, if I may say it. 0:53:25.3 Dutch translation Then it’s not helping. Dutch translation It’s harming you. Dutch translation It is important to recognise that. Dutch translation Really, true. So the practice of meditation or working with the spiritual. All this, bottom line is to make the person better. 0:54:11.0 Dutch translation In normal Western language, you say ‘Bringing closer to your goal’ whatever it is. Dutch translation

So Buddhism is really a way of life rather than worshipping or praying. Praying and worshipping, nothing wrong but main thing is way of life and making difference. 0:54:55.5 Dutch translation You can achieve that through a daily practice. Dutch translation You can achieve that with the meditation. Dutch translation You can achieve that with saying mantras. Dutch translation You can achieve that without doing anything but thinking and analysing and watching your own mind and suggesting the right thing to yourself. 0:55:38.7 Dutch translation So that’s the way we look for. Dutch translation And if you could achieve that, then we embraced human life. Dutch translation

And Buddha says human life is tremendously precious and important, we all know that anyway Dutch translation if you realise, if you think. Dutch translation If you don’t think, if you ignore 0:56:23.0 then you say ‘So life is granted, so doesn’t matter and I hate myself and I will kill myself’, all this are because you don’t think. Dutch translation If you think, life is very precious. You know it. Dutch translation I always make a funny children’s joke here. Dutch translation It is like childish joke. 0:57:05.7 Dutch translation We all know multimillion dollar, or just million dollar is tremendous amount of money and important. Dutch translation And if we get a million dollar we’ll be very happy, no doubt. Dutch translation Probably many people will say ‘I’ll do anything’. Dutch translation But somebody tells you ‘I’ll give you a million dollar if you let me cut your head off’. Dutch translation Who will say yes? [Laughter] 0:58:00.7 Dutch translation Unless you’re crazy Dutch translation But probably we all are a little bit crazy, couple of screws are loose. Dutch translation But if you lost lot of screws then you probably say yes. Dutch translation So this is like a childish story. 0:58:29.0 Dutch translation

But you will also realise, you cannot give life even for a million dollars. Dutch translation So that shows it is more valuable, more important than million dollars. Dutch translation So when the Buddha says life is more precious than magic lamp, he is right. Dutch translation And it’s also important you can achieve anything you want to. Am I understand correctly this Einstein is human being, was human being? Dutch translation That’s the same human being as we are. 0:59:39.4 Dutch translation I don’t think he has a different brain. Dutch translation Nor different nose, eyes, ears, all same thing. Dutch translation He happens to be using his mind better than us. Dutch translation It’s the same mind what we have. 1:00:13.0 Dutch translation So Buddha, as far as I know, was also human being like us. Dutch translation Maybe it has a little bigger in the brains right… Dutch translation

But 2500 years been passed through so you know, become little longer and little shorter and little thinner and little fatter. It all depends on country to country but origin if you really 1:00:58.0 [?] Dutch translation So the human life, the bottom line what I’m telling here is human life is capable of delivering material, spiritual, scientific, whatever achievement, we call today scientific achievement it is a human achievement, believe it or not. Dutch translation So then we also have the same thing, we can do it. Dutch translation What we need to do is we need to improve our mind, way of thinking, way of living, way of dealing with little bit improvement. Dutch translation Little efforts will make a big difference. 1:02:25.7 Dutch translation And when you use those little efforts and when you look back, these negative emotions we’ve been talking earlier like monster that comes over us and we will sit at corner and say ‘I don’t want to talk about it’ and these negative emotions, huge like monsters, can become a little schmooze. Do you know that word ‘schmooze’? [Laughter] It is the Yiddish word for little thing or little problem or something. 1:03:08.9 Dutch translation [Laughter]

Not only it will not overtake you, not only you do not recognise that it’s already overtaking you but you almost see them coming to your door and ringing the doorbell. Dutch translation And then you can open the door and look down and say ‘Hey, I haven’t seen you for long time. Would you like to come in and have a cup of tea?’ Dutch translation So all it takes a little effort of awareness, acknowledgement and seeking the antidote and applying. Dutch translation So that’s what we’ll do for the next two days, anyway those who are coming for the weekends. Dutch translation And Sunday afternoon, just before we end, we are also doing a White Tara Long Life practice, initiation, whatever. 1:05:39.9 Dutch translation

The White Tara is- if you look at the Judeo-Christian tradition- it is almost like Mother Mary type of protector in Buddhism. Dutch translation It is 1:06:25.5 feminine principle in Buddhism. Dutch translation Most of those buddhas are male, she’s female. Dutch translation Not only that, she choose to remain as a female from the beginning, in between contemplating period and finally even after enlightened, function and work with the people like that of a female and we even call it Mother Tara. 1:07:11.4 Dutch translation What we’ll do is we meditatively invite both Tara Dutch translation and seek her blessings, Dutch translation protections Dutch translation and particularly try to heal our body and emotion. Dutch translation And we heal the body through the usage of four elements. 1:08:08.4 Dutch translation

Such as earth element in our body Dutch translation like our flesh and bones. All of those are earth elements. Dutch translation And all the liquid in our body it is our water element. Dutch translation And heat and digestion power within us is the fire element. And the circulation is the air element. Dutch translation And as well as we have an external environment such as earth, water, air, heat. It’s cold in Holland. It’s a little late, I think. 1:09:08.2 Dutch translation So we connect the external and internal elements. Dutch translation And heal through that. Dutch translation So that's what we plan to do. Dutch translation And you're welcome. Ok so I think that’s about it and do you have any questions? Dutch translation

Audience: Could you say something about fear? Because you talked about anger then attachment. How about fear?

Rimpoche: Fear is thinking ‘I’m afraid’. Dutch translation Actually, fear is a big problem with a tremendous amount of people. People get so afraid, afraid of what? Afraid of losing something. Sometimes people don’t even know what you’re afraid of but afraid of losing- losing the life, losing the loved one, losing the comfort, losing the identity. Because we have lost a number of times. 1:11:24.4 Dutch translation Sometimes people unnecessarily get afraid that somebody come out of your closet. So some people can’t even sleep with the lights off, sometimes people don’t sleep without turning the television off or radio off because they’re afraid. Dutch translation But no one’s going to walk out of the closet or under the bed. No monster will come out of under the bed. Dutch translation

But we are afraid, truly. Dutch translation Because we have lost lot of times. 1:12:49.0 Dutch translation And that’s why we are afraid. And the fear is actually a terrible thing. Dutch translation And when you really know, deep, true meaning of life, it will go beyond the fear. Dutch translation Ok I’m not talking about a type of fear that somebody walking downtown New York in Holland and then you don’t have to be afraid someone will come behind you and attack. I’m not talking about that type of fear. That type of fear, sometimes to be cautious is better. Thinking I’m not going to be afraid. That’s more safer.

But I’m talking about the unnecessary fear that we have, always worrying about something and that is another addiction that we have. 1:14:08.4 Dutch translation Addiction of people on these negative emotions are so terrible. Dutch translation It is a different from a physical addictions. Dutch translation All the world leaders seems to be addressing, particularly Judge Wright, is very concerned with the physical addictions. I wish he’s more concerned with the emotional addictions. Dutch translation If he is more concerned with negative emotions and negative emotional addictions, we would have welcomed him. 1:15:47.1 Dutch translation But he might have addiction of fear himself. Dutch translation That’s a joke, I’m sorry, Dutch translation at the expense of Judge Wright. Anyway, so any other questions?

Audience: You talked about negativity but you can speak about, instead of negativity, you can speak about dualistic 1:16:23.0 mind instead? Dutch translation

Audience: The question is negativity sounds very negative, that’s why he suggest we talk about dualistic mind, instead.

Rimpoche: Negativity is negative mind. Negativity is negative because it causes suffering. Dutch translation And we do accept negativity. Dutch translation Do we like it? No we don’t. 1:17:32.8 Dutch translation Do we have it? Dutch translation We do. Dutch translation What do we do with this? Dutch translation Get rid of it. Dutch translation Can we do it? Dutch translation We can. Dutch translation Is there way out? Dutch translation Yes there is a way out. Dutch translation Can we do it? Depends on ourself. Dutch translation We can definitely do it. Dutch translation But can we deny? What is the use? Dutch translation If we deny, we cannot work with it. And important thing is acknowledge. Recognise, try to get out of our system. 1:18:36.9 Dutch translation I’m sure some people may not like that but that’s the way how I know how to deal with that. Dutch translation I’m sorry. [Laughter]

Audience: Maybe you can explain a little bit the difference how you see negativity and dualistic mind?

Rimpoche: Dualistic mind is totally different. Dutch translation We all have dualistic perception at this moment. 1:19:20.8 Dutch translation We do not see the true reality. Dutch translation And if we see the true reality we will have no mystery of life yet. Dutch translation The moment we are free of dualistic perception, and then we will solve the mystery of life. Dutch translation Dualistic, two views. Dutch translation The view of absolute reality and the view of relativity 1:20:08.9 Dutch translation and mixing them together. Dutch translation This is the problem. Dutch translation And so that’s a problem is- when I say earlier the cause of all our problems are the ignorance, I’m talking about ignorance of that particular thing since the question of dualistic come up, I have to deal with it. But that was a complicated subject. 1:20:50.3 Dutch translation

Audience: If bad things happen in life, if you encounter problems, the question is how can you make some positive use of those problems?

Rinpoche: That’s very good question. Dutch translation Any bad things happening in our life there is always something to learn out of that. 1:23:09.3 Dutch translation Tibetan Buddhism offers a tremendous amount of method. One of them what we call it? Technique of give and take. Dutch translation And ‘give and take’ techniques are normally you can take it- I mean whether you have the problem already. So making use of this as yourself, like myself. When I have a problem and my suffering hopefully will substitute number of different people who has to suffer like me. Hoping to substitute that so that they don’t have to experience. And also, taking all others suffering similar to that type of thing to get own suffering and making use of that so that others don’t suffer. Also, giving our positive karma to those people who just like ourself are suffering there and hoping that they will share the joy et cetera. There are a number of different things in that. 1:25:06.7 Dutch translation And there’s more.

The Vajrayana Buddhism gives much more activities to deal with that. Dutch translation But simply, one thing which you can do is [?] substitute all these will purify all our negativities that is the limitless of the negativities that we have. Each one of them capable of giving different result like this. Maybe substitute by this one of two motivators there only. Dutch translation For self and for others as we mentioned earlier. Dutch translation Ok.

Well if there’s no questions we will like to conclude this talk tonight by a very brief meditation. 1:27:58.5 Dutch translation Basically when I say meditation I notice everybody’s moving. [Laughter] Dutch translation So naturally everybody have some idea of how to sit. Dutch translation So way and how you do, if you don’t have any idea, way and how you do is sit where you are. Dutch translation Sit on the ground, if ground’s not there sit on the chair. Dutch translation Keep your backbone straight. 1:29:01.7 Dutch translation Put your hands together. Dutch translation Either this style or put on the two legs, whichever is easier- two knees, sorry. Dutch translation Ok.

Now the most important thing is observing your mind. 1:29:38.5 Dutch translation The observing mind here I mean what are you thinking about. Dutch translation If you’re thinking positive, virtuous, great. Dutch translation If you’re thinking negative, or non-virtuous, then remove it. Dutch translation Let it go, think something else. Dutch translation Think something positive. Dutch translation Positive that whatever little meditation we do here, do it for the benefit of me and all other beings. 1:31:00.0 Dutch translation While you are keeping your mind pure, Dutch translation you think all enlightened beings are right in front of you. Dutch translation Whether it is Buddha or Jesus or whatever. All the enlightened beings in front of us. Dutch translation We look at them with profound thought Dutch translation and respect. I will also see their qualities. Dutch translation Quality of mind, Dutch translation quality of kindness, 1:33:18.0 Dutch translation quality of compassion, Dutch translation love, Dutch translation admire and I will seek the same qualities. Dutch translation
