Rimpoche: Welcome everybody here. I’m happy to do this here because this is one of the complete, at least organised, complete path. First time I’m doing in this trip anyway. 0:03:55.2 So here you are about what, 100 people? So 50 percent I believe is part of our Jewel Heart. And 50 percent is not, am I correct? Okay I’d like to see those who are here first time, would you like to raise your hand? Okay thank you. Are you here by curiosity or are you here for what? Begin with you- you’re sitting right in the front, and you too. Go ahead. 0:05:21.4
Curiosity, that’s very good. Deeply interested and curiosity. That covers almost everybody? That cover more or less everybody, new ones here. Yea? More or less.
Okay. So now the subject what we got today is actually essence of the Buddhism. I’d like to make very clear here. One, I’m not Buddhist missionary. I’m not here to convert you into buddhism. Nor I have something new that you don’t know, to say. You understand? So, if you’re looking for something new you better get out. Nor have I any mystical thing here. Nor I’ve been choosing to speak to you. Nor I have voice hearing in me, whispering say this and that. Okay? Is that clear? Okay you may be saying what the hell you are doing here? What do we pay you money here for?
So, I’m here for remind myself a little bit. And maybe you get something to work towards yourself. So, what I’m going to do here, is going to draw from the experience of the great masters and see how they have applied the exact problems that we face today. And see if there is something that can be helpful for us. Okay. So, what we are going to talk here is rather important. Rather important because as I said it’s the essence of all experience.
0:10:53.6 And I’m also going to talk slightly different than the transcripts talk to you. You know why? Because the information that we share from Buddhism, is really endless. Is no limitations. So, the information that you have in transcripts, you have this Three Principle transcripts, couple of them together right? Which is one angle only, from one angle. And there are hundred different angles which you can 0:12:36.4 inaudible. So, I hope to do something slightly different than what you already knew. Which you already knew. Some of you individually might have not known but the transcripts are available. So, which I consider you knew already.
0:13:12.1 So I’m trying to talk to you slightly different angle. Okay so, maybe I should give you the choice. And that is would you like to hear this Three Principles of the Path in form of practice or would you like to hear this in the form of scholarship?
0:15:45.7 Did you get the question? Woah, the scholarship is gone, there are like 4-5 hands, the rest are all practical form. Okay. So, to begin with we would like to say, the question really goes beyond what are the Three Principles of the Path. The question goes in what are we looking for? What are we looking for is very important question that you have to ask yourself. You know you are in Europe. In Europe, the Europeans just don’t waste their time. They put their efforts with purpose. So, all of you here not only putting your time, even your money.
0:18:34.7 Or is the other way round. Not only your money but also your time and energy. Why? It’s important question, why? You may even put your kids with your parents. The whole week you work, you’re not with your kids. So, then this comes weekends and even then, you put your kids with your parents and you come here, why? Some of you. Some of you have a lot of other things to do. So why? Maybe out of curiosity if you want. But you have some desire, even curiosity, you’re looking for something. What is it you are looking?
0:20:30.8 Rimpoche answering to an audience: What was that? What is higher level? More love in our relationship? Hmmm.. maybe the kama sutra is the answer. Or different type of love what you looking for. Deeper love. Deeper connection. With not just single person but more, sort of total humanitarian level. Or when you’re looking at higher level, are you talking about divine level? Interesting.
0:23:57.2 So I tell you what. The higher level what we are looking is perhaps free of sufferings. Perhaps it is free of self-cherishing. Did you hear me? Self-cherishing. Some people did, some people did not. When I’m saying self-cherishing, I don’t mean fulfilling your self-interest. What I mean is narrow selfishness activities. Another words, well if I make it myself then that’s fine doesn’t matter what happens to anybody else. Perhaps, we would like to free ourselves from some kind of delusional confusions that we go through with our lives.
0:26:26.0 Are we on the target? The gentlemen in the red shirt, are we on the target? I think I’m on the subject. When we are talking about free from sufferings, we are talking about the first principle. When we are talking free of narrow self-interest alone, conducting our life, we are talking about second principle. And when we are talking about free of delusions, confusions we are talking about the third principle. So, we are very much on the subject. That thing we don’t worry about. What I’m worry about is higher level try to fit in this. So, higher is a word, and word is to identify something. So, we try to identify that. You use word, I use word. We try to see the same own thing. We try to see we are not talking about oranges and apples. But we are talking about oranges and oranges.
0:31:00.5 Only I’m trying to avoid is what we call love and light. The higher can go anywhere. Okay so we want to make sure we are on the ground. Apples and apples, not apples and oranges.
0:32:46.7 Rimpoche answering audience: I think it is very important what you are saying. Because you cannot get away from anything. But you can do things with yourself. And that’s we are here to see. That’s why right from the beginning I told you, I have nothing new that you don’t know to say. But you know we don’t know exactly what to use where, that’s the problem. Things like this what we call it teachings. We try to draw within from ourself and to make sure the right application goes on the right stuff.
Okay so let it be clear, the root text what we are using here is a letter, a letter written by a great master called Tsongkapa 1357 to 1419. And he wrote this to one of his friend and disciple. So that is actually what we going to use. We going to use a letter. And letter which is so important. At least five hundred years a great many Tibetan masters have been studying this.
0:36:27.5 These three things, three principles are actually very important in our lives. Because number one, the first one, emphasis for freedom. Freedom from our negative emotions. Or delusions. Do you understand when we say, negative emotions what do you think we are referring to? It is important that we talk on the same level. Again, oranges and oranges. Okay, so anyway when we are talking about negative emotions, we are talking about anger, we are talking about hatred, we are talking about attachment, we are talking about ignorance. Let it be very clear right from the beginning.
0:38:50.2 Is that clear to you all? Right is it okay? Ignorance. You hit the button. Good question. My view point of ignorance is I’m looking at confusion and wrong knowing. And I’m also looking oneness with that is fear. Oneness with that confusion is fear. So that is my viewpoint of ignorance. Whatever yours we going to talk later, let’s not talk about now. Okay so, that is our target. Target of negation. Did you get it? That’s what we have to get rid of it. That’s what we try to throw out of it.
So, we are now talking the same thing right. Good. So let’s deal with that first. Let’s not worry about two other principles now. This is our goal. Our goal is freedom. Free from the suffering. Free from the suffering of negative emotions. Whatever name you may be putting it. Divine blessing, love light, mystical achievement, spiritual development, becoming enlightened, whatever name you put in, what you are really looking is this. Let’s spend a little time, if you are looking for divine intervention, what do you expect? The divine will come down and make me better?
0:42:56.6 Make me perfect right? That’s what you look for. So how can you be perfect if you have hatred, anger, attachment and confused. How can you be perfect? So that’s why even you looking for divine intervention, that’s what you are looking for. And if you are looking for some kind of upliftment, suddenly poop, up! And if you have full of hatred, attachment and confused how can you get up there? Even somebody lifted you up physically you going to drop down anyway.
0:44:28.6 So what did we say, divine intervention, upliftment, light and love. Okay if light comes from divine source, what would light do to you? Right? To help us? And what can they help? Except washing our anger, except washing our attachment and make us not confused. So really think very carefully, we are all good human beings with good brain and good education background. Think very carefully. Let there be no misunderstanding. I’m not saying there is no divine blessing. I’m not saying there is no love and light. I’m not saying there is no upliftment. But I’m saying what they will do. Okay. Are we now together? So, whether you work yourself and do it for you, or you have divine individual or whatever it may be, this will be our goals.
0:46:44.1 If you have different goals, tell me now. That’s why we are taking about, we are trying to establish our goals. You know if you don’t establish our goal, like shooting an arrow in forest without any target. So, it may go anywhere. If you have target, you can focus, you can do anything and you can pinpoint. That’s why you try to achieve something. What are we trying to get at; that’s the goal. Is it clear between you and me? You know you put your efforts in, right? And to get what? If you don’t know to get what, I think we need to know what are we doing. That’s why I raised the question right in the beginning.
0:48:57.1 People working in jobs, their goal is to accomplish their work and make money. Right? Make money is your main goal. You don’t want to say it. You want to say complete my work. That is the material world outside everyday world, their goal. Now us who are interested in spiritual path, we know we are looking something more deeper than money, more deeper than material development. It may be true we don’t know what we are looking for, we must know what we wanted, what I wanted. Yeah what I want is joy and happiness. No matter whether you male or women or insect or animal. We look for that. It is our goal. Material people think they can get happiness by getting money or job or whatever.
0:50:55.8 And we the spiritual think there is something more than that. So we can’t pinpoint our finger. So I’m trying to introduce you here, something to point it out. That’s what I want. That is freedom, joy, pleasure, peace, harmony. Are we with me? Good. Now we have the goal. So then we talk about how to get that goal. We talking about divine intervention, we talk about love and light, we talk about meditation and all of those how to get there. Offering Worshipping. Are we all clear now? Thank you I’m glad we are all clear now.
0:52:39.7 You are a spiritual person. Aren’t you? You are. So, what do you different than those yuppies? Your goal is not only the money. Your aim is not to become rich and famous. That doesn’t mean if you become rich and famous no problem; you don’t have to reject it. But that is not your goal. You going a little beyond that. Right? That is your spiritualist. Because these are the interesting words we use, we play with words but we really have to get pinpoint. Particularly I know you are in Jewel Heart. So, what are you doing there? So, you try to gain something. You not going to get money from Jewel Heart. You know it right? If you work it becomes volunteer. You pay money you don’t get money. So, you’re not looking for money. You’re looking something better than money. That is happiness. Free of negative emotions.
0:55:36.5 And that’s your spiritualist. That’s good I mean it’s important we talk about it. It’s important to read books. But it’s important to know, establish what we are doing, where we are. Particularly those of you who are in Jewel Heart, I have personal responsibility.
0:56:47.0 Okay good so now we know what we are doing here. We try to reduce our anger, we try to reduce attachment, we try to reduce confusion. Okay? And that is the goal of those great spiritual people too. You know this Buddha, went away from his home and spend six years at the forest of something, right. He was not trying to run away from house like our teenagers do. Our teenagers are not happy with our home, they have anger against our family. And they are not happy they try to run and find happiness outside. So, they went to coffeeshop in Netherlands at least. Or bars to drink. Even then they looking for something. But they don’t know what they are looking for. Really true that’s the problem. They think there is something called happiness or something. Something which some sort of switch then you turn on and off or something called happiness.
0:59:13.1 So when you become older, elder than teenagers, we don’t behave like that. We behave a little different. That little different is we want to make sure it is the right one. And if you don’t get the right target, the right thing. And then we get into trouble. To get the right thing is very important. So I’m trying to establish goal. Though there is no goal. And that is goalless goal. Okay is it clear? Good. Now the question is how do we get it.
1:00:40.5 So, we now look at earlier masters. How did they get it? So, it’s not instant. It’s not instant coffee. You know if its instant, that’s not good. Actually, there is no instant enlightenment you know that right. There is no instant enlightenment okay, let’s not confused that first. It’s so important. We all look for instant, you, me, everybody, we all look for instant. I’m here sitting and looking at you telling you there is no instant enlightenment. But when I’m alone, I’m doing my own practice, somehow at the back of my mind still looking at instant enlightenment. And I knew its true, and I say it to you, still I have something looking back.
1:02:41.7 So perhaps we are not looking at instant. We are looking at result level. We ignore the process in between. We simply looking at the result. So, it looks like instant. By the time when you finally reach there. Okay? Now the first question comes, what shall we do. Where do I begin. What shall I do? This Tsongkapa says, Jetsun lama nam la cha sa lo, homage to you great masters. Okay. Homage to the great masters. Now who is the great master? Why do you do this? And then how? Do you get it? Who, why and how? Three questions. Are you with me?
1:05:09.1 If you’re with me it’s fine, otherwise I go in one layer, and you go in another layer then we miss each other. Good. So who is Tsongkapa paying homage? To his masters. To his spiritual teachers. And that includes umm. Can I get any answer Naomi? That includes who? Buddha? Who is it? Atisha? Atisha was 11th hundredth, Tsongkapa was 14th hundredth, okay?
1:08:46.6 All his teachers particular one person called Manjushri. Manjushri is the embodiment of wisdom of all buddhas. Are you with me? So, it is important for him to pay homage to his master, which is to his guru. Okay why? Because his master is the one who shows him the path, who shows him what to do. And not only that, the most important it is connection. Connection between enlightened society and non-enlightened person like me. We talk about enlightened society this and that, but enlightenment is within ourself, nothing that you psychically go and get there but it is within ourself.
1:11:01.7 Are you with me? It’s like we cannot open the right file. The computer file. Unless you have the right connection. Do you understand now? Right connection is so important to open the right information. Right door. So, the masters are the connections. And one of the things in this information like electricity, if there is no electricity nothing works. Like electricity, this information they tell you the connection is the master connection. You have heard so much about the guru business in the sixties. And a lot of people benefitted and a lot of people have lots of difficulties. And then most a lot of people don’t talk about it. And that is what we are talking about here.
1:13:34.8 Yes information is available, but to work with that information you need this connection. Right? You have a menu there, computer menu, you have computer in front of you, if you have no electricity, and you know what to do because you have information in there, and then you hit every button, nothings working. And then you say why not? Ah there is no electricity, we have to connect to electricity. Then you switch on the electricity. Then it works. Then you can look your menu then change and do everything. Just like that the master is important link. And that’s why he pay homage. And not only all the masters, master from whom he got this particular linage. So, number one they emphasis is guru devotional practice.
1:15:52.1 And they label this as root of all development. Okay and this is not a scientific thing. If it’s a scientific thing wherever whatever you do, it should work. Whoever does. So this is slightly non-scientific. The guru is important here. Who is guru, what is guru? The guru is the person from whom you take this teaching. The guru is the person who show you this path. And it is the person who guide you on this. And it’s the person who walks with you on this. And it’s the vehicle that delivers you to the ultimate goal. So, it’s important. Okay? I wanted to emphasis here it’s not information alone. It’s the connection.
1:17:51.4 We have intention that is only looking at information. And not looking at the connection. That’s wrong. No matter whatever you do there after it won’t work. Remember it is electricity for computer. Or washing machine. Okay. So, traditionally they tell you guru devotional practice is root of all development. Root, tree root.
1:19:29.0 Now we still talking about guru, and I met a couple of people during the break who try to run away from guru. And I’m not sure whether there is something to run away. Or also met couple of people who could not get in touch with guru too. So, I’m not sure whether there is something to run away or something to get hold of. Also, it’s not so important to have psychical relationship. Physical I don’t mean funny way. Okay so let’s talk about that. The question rises, is guru necessary? Mind you this is subject I don’t talk at beginning level at all. You know it. If you read the transcript, you don’t have that much, do we in that three principle? Not so much guru business, right?
1:22:00.2 But it is also important. So, the question really rises is guru really necessary? And what makes it right guru. And all these are important. These both are important questions. And the answer that I know are, is, so far, I know, yes guru is important and necessary. You know why? It’s the connection. And it’s the guide. And there are many more. There are many more. And then there is type of gurus. Some gurus are very strict, give you instruction after instruction. And demand you to follow it hour after hour. And have a strict discipline. There are some types of gurus you get nothing from instruction and you wonder what’s happening and where are you. So, there are types of different gurus. Okay so, and then the connection also. There are personal connections, there are general connections, there are specific connections.
1:25:23.2 Personal connection is personally you can talk this and that, do all of those. That also you can talk personally all the time and you can talk personally limited time. And then there is general connection. Generally connected. Means nothing specific personally, very generally. And then you have, specific instructions for specific purposes. So, then the question comes what you can get it and what is good for you. And then one thing I’d like to tell you is, always you have to remember, you are the one who chooses your guru, not guru, not the organisation, not the advertising agent. That is very important. Because if you don’t choose, if somebody chooses you then you are in big problem. So, it is important that you choose.
1:27:40.4 It is also important you choose the guru on the ground on his or her qualifications rather than anything else. The qualification here is we are not looking at the university certificate. Perhaps if there is some guru who is carry some university certificate you probably don’t want it. It could be disqualification. The qualification what you really look at is, if you look in our Lamrim or even Odyssey to Freedom. Or maybe some Three Principle Paths too. In this short commentary they give you the qualities. But the most important thing, maybe ten, basically there are ten qualities. Whatever we may talk about the quality, the most important quality here is a good person.
1:30:37.1 A very good person. Compassionate one. And who has the knowledge and understanding of what the path you’re getting in. You know basically if it’s not good person you have big problem. And if he or she doesn’t know the path what he or she is talking about, and then what is there to teach? It’s fit to be student rather than fit to be guru. And that also, that also the real knowledge. Deeper spiritual development of course but also must know the text, must know. And if you get a word, say, homage to the gurus. So, when you wanted to talk about gurus, has to know quality of the gurus. And necessary or not necessary about guru. Benefit of having guru. Disadvantage of not having guru. And also, the wrong relationship. Inaudible…
1:33:19.6 if they don’t know that, they can’t teach. Or then your teachings will be some kind of in drawing from the divine line, is the basic root for fraud. So that’s why the person whoever who is teaching knows the subject, absolutely necessary. And we talk about the guru person. We talk about knowing better than me, because I have to learn from that person, if he doesn’t know better than me then nothing to learn right? Definitely one who is a compassionate person. Otherwise, the person won’t care for you right? If they don’t care for you, why should you care of them. I mean that’s not the issue, if they don’t care for you, you won’t get the benefit at all. The whole purpose is to benefit. And that is defeated if they don’t have these three qualities, minimum. Bare bones of minimum requirement. Okay? So, I hope we will have plenty of them here. Really, I mean it. If you don’t get enough of those then, before you become a guru, you represent the guru first actually.
1:36:13.6 So you lead the gurus. And you lead the discussions. You try to help the others. But you must remember you have limitations. You can definitely say I don’t know. Because some people when they asked to lead group, they are hesitant to say I don’t know. You must know to say I don’t know. And when you don’t know never pretend you know it. Never ever. You know why? You not only you mislead yourself, you going to mislead others. This is the last thing you need. Okay? So, when you say I don’t know that does not make you disqualify. And that makes you to learn more. And meditate more. Learning alone again is not enough. If we produce a learned person, we produce a professor. And we have plenty of them. And the fat ones, the thin ones, the tall ones, the handsome ones, ugly ones all of them we have, beautiful ones.
1:38:36.6 That’s what we don’t need. That’s not what we are looking for. We are looking for somebody who not only have the knowledge. Who can think about it, who understand, who can able to interpret in one’s life and who gain things out of this. And to gain out of this is you must meditate on it. And in order to meditate you must know about it. You must have the information. It is built on top of that. And we will talk about the biographies of the gurus. Basically, the biographies we talk about it, we don’t talk much about is where the person was born, what did he do, or she do. The biography is based under three categories. Category one is learning. Category two is digestment. Category three is meditation and development. This is the fundamental basic, barebones, minimum qualities of teachers who become guru.
1:41:21.9 So, on that quality, on the basis of that quality you are the one who choose your guru, not anybody else. I normally say if somebody calls you, tells you he or she is your guru, you better run away, five hundred miles without looking back. Without looking back. If you look back you going to be caught. So, if you read at least this short explanation here, they give you basically criteria of guru. Otherwise, I can tell you, you are guru, you can tell me I’m guru. You scratch my back I scratch your back so that doesn’t help anyone. And the worse part of this we are misleading each other and we are misleading others too.
1:43:23.4 So, basically if you know the criteria of the guru then you can choose. And if you don’t know that you have to make your basis on something. Which could be anything. Ini mini mine mo, catch tiger by the toe, if he holds let him go, that’s what it is. If you don’t know the criteria. If you don’t know that then you have to pick up one, then whatever. So, whatever little I know is guru necessary? Guru has to have its own qualifications and qualities. And any type of relations I told you at least. The problem here is bigger than what we think. The total spiritual connection. That’s why it’s important. It’s the electricity remember? Okay I think I have said enough about it. So, the teaching tradition here will tell you, whether that individual person is buddha or not buddha, for me it is representing buddha.
1:46:19.4 So it is important for me. Nobody tells you, nobody makes law, that’s not law. Nobody will punish you. Nobody will chase you. If they are chasing you, it is the sign it is not good. You understand? And by chasing you it is a sign that is not right. Something is wrong. Like in my case, in my case, if anybody say okay goodbye, I’ll say goodbye. And it is goodbye. There is nothing try to get out of it. You’re out. And if you turn back and say I’m in, hey you’re in. No big deal. But if they chase you, hey you can’t’ be out, blah blah blah then it’s not good. It’s a sign of motivation. Sign of hidden agenda. The true relationship between the guru and myself is built by me. I’m talking about my guru. I’m not talking about your guru. And my guru and my relationship is built by me. So, there is a time comes when you don’t want to run away. You want to further intensify. You want to make it personal. So this is my experience. Okay so I share my experience.
1:49:31.3 Not only that. Not only you want to intensify but you want to become oneness. You want to be there all the time. Physically or mentally or emotionally. So that’s the who my experience is. Okay? Like I’m a Buddhist I talk to you from Buddhist point of view. And I have a desire to become buddha. It is a desire. Will I abandon that? No. No matter whatever you do. Even you may have whole cultural revolution, not going to happen anyway. When the culture revolution cannot make you do that, no one else can. So, it is desire. That’s it. Whole desire might not be bad. There is something called pure love. Which might not be attachment. The word attachment is different.
1:52:08.2 Perhaps the ancient wise people might not have a separation. The word wise, separation between attachment and pure love. Or the words are very very close to each other. And then the modern development of language has been add up different words and may give you slightly different understanding, messages anyway. I think it is extremely difficult to differentiate between attachment and pure love. It may be as subtle as your hair. Not whole hair, one hair. Anyway, so that’s what I request you to think about.
1:53:43.6 I’m not going to tell you to think about it, I request you to think about it okay. Can we close this particular subject? Unless you have any question? This is very very tricky, very very important. It has made mess out of people’s life. It has made perfect out of people’s life. So, it is very very important.
1:55:27.5 Rimpoche answering to questions: Nothing wrong. Nothing wrong. Its good. Especially books here, this type has the life behind it. It is not a simple dry book. And certain analysing is also very much you try to do here. And you have others also inaudible. They are all great. Nothing wrong. But connection must be there. Must have connection. Maintain or not maintain is different issue. Must have connection. If you don’t, totally become bare information. If you do, it doesn’t become bare information it becomes alive. This is honesty, from the heart. This may invite criticism but it is honest thing.
2:00:14.4 I’m trying to say not to do that. That’s why I’m trying to give you the criteria. Don’t make blind judgement. Try to make wise judgement. You know why? In the west, before, nobody ever gives criteria of the guru. They just say it’s the guru. Or they say I am the guru whatever. And that is a problem, source of problem. I tell you one thing. In traditional in India, early Buddhist period, this great mahasiddhis, or siddhas, they go and check their gurus. And when they find the right guru, and then they say you are my guru. They say no, they even deny their own names. If you look at Naropa and Tilopa’s meeting. And when Naropa told Tilopa, you are Tilopa, he says who is that I have no idea. And also, Naropa found Tilopa roasting live fish and eating. And it’s always that way if you look at traditional way.
2:03:02.7 Never anybody said I’m your guru. No one has ever ever try till this twentieth century. In this twentieth century you find gurus are advertising not only in the yellow pages but also on television. So that is how it worked before. Now it is yellow pages. Or posters. Or whatever, how did you get to know here? Through posters I’m sure, or information, I’m sure. Right? Which is wrong. It’s not ancient wisdom way. But you have to do this now. It’s called change of time. So, you have to also change your way of doing accordingly. But no matter whatever it is, don’t make blind judgement. Even dogs, this is traditional teachers tell you, even dogs if you throw food at the dog, if the dog trust the person, the dog will just eat. Otherwise, dog will smell it. Look at it. Whether its edible or not edible. And when it’s not edible at least in his knowledge, the dog’s knowledge, if it’s not edible they won’t eat. And that’s why people who want to poison dogs, they put the poison inside the meat, so the dog only smell meat not the poison right? So even the dog makes difference, by checking whether its edible or not edible. So, we will measure our clothes whether it fits or not fits.
2:06:23.4 And if it fits and its good looking and warm, then we will buy. We don’t buy because it is Georgio Armani. Right? So, if you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it that’s different story. So anyway, this is how we have to measure in our life. Spiritual life. You know why? There is a lot of fraud. Some of the frauds are so bad. And you not only lose your everything and you lose your life too. The story of Jim Jones, Heaven’s gate and even you have something in Switzerland few years ago. People committing suicide thinking you going to go heaven. We have all inaudible… so all of those are corruption in the system and all of them will come because I miss the boat. I miss opportunity. Afraid of missing opportunity. Okay so it’s great that you don’t want to miss opportunity but it’s also important to watch it carefully. We are educated human beings. We are not in the fourteenth century or sixteenth century. We are in the twenty first century. We are educated, we have great mind. Make best use of it. Otherwise as good as not having anything.
