Rejoice and double the benefit
Rimpoche: okay now so I’m hoping you will enjoy following the footsteps of the Buddha from Nepal from ? onwards and especially the Vajrayogini cave in Nepal and the great stupas Where we have ? a new cloth and a new umbrella and a new coloring and opening of eyes all this ? the stupas and we look back and rejoice when we rejoice we double the benefit of what we did before. So we look back and we rejoice.
Followed by going to the Buddha’s birthplace and all the other places where Buddha had traveled and also these four places where Buddha passed away, where Buddha was born and also where Buddha obtained enlightenment and Buddha’s giving teaching in Varanasi and all those 000707
and his enlightenment in Bodigaya. As far as I’m concerned we are all truly satisfied with every place we visited with the exception of Bodigaya which is (Rimpoche has an aside) 000736
Which is a little too hectic as well as too much (?). Fortunately when we went there, there was not quite as much activity because of (?) but still going through the Buddha’s temple where that image in Bodigaya in the Buddha’s temple is supposed to be self created.
Self created image of Buddha
The story goes there was a mother. The mother has three sons. The two senior son liked the non-Buddhist path and the younger son liked Buddhism. So they went out and one day the mother found all three coming back and the young one was crying.
So she said what is wrong? So the young one says my two older brothers like the non-Buddhist path better and I like Buddhist path better. So they bully me and abuse me and they give me a lot of hard times so I am crying.
So she said oh don’t worry about it. We can find out which is better. So how would you like to find out? One of the elder sons said well no one can tell me because I won’t believe it unless I see some great teacher and almost believe them to be (living? Deity?) Shiva. So until I hear from him, I will not believe anyone no matter what he says. 000953
So she said okay why don’t all three of you go there and so find out from him. So they said no it is too far we cannot get there at all. She said yes you can go there. I have a method.
I have a little bit of (?) So here’s this material put it on you leg and through your foot and go. So by the power of that material, they were able to cross huge distances. In those days they did not measure by miles or kilometers. But the distance that the had to cover in ten days, they covered very quick. I don’t know whether it was one day or two days. I don’t know how quickly it was but it was very quick.
And on the way they found a lot of those Buddhist and non-Buddhist all kinds of people coming back after seeing this particular guy. I don’t know why all the Buddhist were to going to see this guy maybe he favors Buddhist who knows. (?) The youngest one thought well he likes Buddhists so the young one was a little happy.
So they went there and they said anything you want in the material world including health wealth and longevity up to that level I can help you. Beyond that I cannot help you - it is the Buddha who can help you. You go and see Buddha.
So they all (?) And they all became Buddhist. Each one of those three sons started building a Temple. The older one picked an area out. So one of them is supposed to have picked out Nalanda area. And another one was the builder of this temple. And the young one started crying. 001222
Hartmut I read what I think he was saying into this section from here....
And his mother asked him why he was crying. He said it is easier for my brothers because the two elders picked out the best temple locations - so I can do nothing. She said don’t cry, you have something very special. They have picked out the less important locations. The most important temple location is where Buddha obtained enlightenment. Nobody picked that location, so it is yours! So he was happy! But he realized in time that it was very tough area and he wondered where am I going to get a good artist to build a Buddha image? What am I going to do. So he was worried about it.
His mother saw that he was worried about it. She said, you don’t have to worry about that because there is a certain type of mud. You will find that mud on the bank of the river Yanagana. So pick that mud up and dig a hole. 001335
Then put that special mud in the hole in that area and cover it up for seven days. After seven days that a Buddha image will be made by itself. So he went searching for the mud but he didn’t find it in the river bank at all. So then he started crying again and the mother came and said oh I forgot to tell you one thing - this mud you will find where the elephants sleep
to here...
where the elephants lie down because elephants lie down occasionally so they lay down because they’re attracted to smell under the mud. So they will lie down and the elephants make a big dent and if you dig over there and you’ll find it.
So he found the place where the elephant’s lie down and he dug up some of the very specific mud which has a beautiful smell. So we found the mud and he carried the mud over and dumped the mud into the hole. Then he covered it up with mud for seven days. He guarded that area so that no one would go and no one would touch that area.
He determined to guard that area for seven days. On the sixth-day the mother came and said hey look I want to see it. So he said I’m not supposed open that until seven days have passed. And today is the sixth-day. His mother said, I am the only person who saw Buddha in life so I’m the only person who can tell you if the image is right or wrong and I won’t be here tomorrow. So it is the last day of her life on the earth so she said I need to see it.
So then they dug it up. And when they dug it up the Buddha image was there, except a little tor. Because they dug it up too early the tor was not finished. The tor was not there. 001548
That Buddha image was not supposed to have a tor because the dug it up too soon.
The mother said this is exactly how he looked in life except for four differences. One, Buddha normally radiated light. This one doesn’t radiate light. Buddha normally taught and gave teachings - this one doesn’t.
There were two others differences.... I forgot what they were... if I remember the two..... but I don’t remember. So anyway except these four (?).
Oh yes the eyes are normally radiating light. Light shines from the eyes but this image has some kind of whole (?) Some kind of little lump - nothing else. And then what is it. Her last one, I don’t remember, other than that they are all the same.
So what happened then is she got a little better. She took (cream) and put it on the eyes of the Buddha image and then it had the radiating nature of some kind of semiprecious stone. 001736
Some kind of radiating stone becomes the eyes. Any they said they eyes are supposed to be there until the trouble that India had with the Muslims that tried to destroy Buddhist sites.
So one the soldiers came and took out two of those eyeballs and they broke. He took them out, he fell and both eyes broke into pieces. That’s what (history says?) (?)
And earlier when I first saw the Buddha it was not like that not the Tibetan style with the gold painted. It was just a little stone there, when I first saw Bodigaya in 1959 or the early 60s. That one time I came that was a little stone sitting across Buddha and that was it. Now it is all completely decorated (?) And gold white (?) and eyes. All of them there in those days, it was not there just like that.
Vajra ground
And I don’t know when they started putting gold around that. It must be between the 1960s and the 80s or 90s. So the Buddha statue was not even dressed then, it was just a stone statue sitting on a stone throne. Then this bodhi tree is where Buddha sat and obtained enlightenment and they also said about a (mile?) A square mile under that is supposed to be Vajra ground. 001952
If they dig it I don’t know what would happen. So that is supposed to be self (adhering?) image - that Buddha image originally.
So now we can’t even tell because of the gold (?) lights and all kinds of things. In 1960 or 1959 whether it’s December 1959 or January 1960 in that period when I went there that was not even lighted. It think there was one electric light there and that was it.
And then you had more upstairs there was a second floor there’s a Temple there is an empty throne which is supposed to be the Buddha that went to Tibet. He was sitting on the throne and all this empty throne and everything was there in the 1960s even afterwards when Song Rimpoche asked me to build a (?) I did give a teaching on the second floor 002138
And at that time, I think there was an image of the Buddha there (?) On that empty throne. Now they have sealed this door completely - you can’t even get in. So that is about the Bodigaya aspects of it.
Rejoice
Anyway so whatever (?) situation becomes funny but still it is the true place where Buddha obtained enlightenment. So we are very very appreciative and really this is a wonderful thing and we rejoice.
We have been able to make offerings there. 1000 (lights, lives?) a thousand torma a thousand this and a thousand that everything like a full thousand or something, anyway 002213
So all of those have been done so we can rejoice. Then the Benares I thought everybody explained because we were lucky to have that professor he explained quite well. As again that is where the Buddha gave teachings. And also we did it in a range all our teachings are totally appropriate all these places just fit exactly for the (Buddha’s?) teaching and are verses fit exactly the same way except Bodhigaya in the evening and said maybe one more verse here tonight.
I said what is the next first she wrote it. Oh it is for the (?) so it’s meant for Varinasi so she didn’t insist to give it that night. I’m glad she didn’t give the extra verse sometimes she’s overly enthusiastic and (I, she?) gets a little bit nervous too. But she is great and wonderful but getting nervous is uncalled for
And also the (picture?) of this in Holland. What happened? I was giving teaching on something in Holland and they started getting nervous. They were saying. “how is he going to finish”? and I said alright you come here sit on this chair and you do it and I’ll sit down there.
So they started getting unnecessarily nervous and they never used to be but I don’t know where they picked it up and we get a little bit nervous on both sides of the ocean. 002409
You know people started picking up that little bit of getting nervous which is uncalled for and unnecessary. It is the (indication, invitation?) of difficulty to the individual too. Maybe it’s a purification - I don’t know maybe. So anyway I’m glad. And as always very happy with this and now the other (?) I get now what you went to today and that’s not the place where Buddha went. That is not. It is the legend developed the beautiful gift.... did you give a talk today you’re supposed to.
Audience: yes there was a guide and it’s very difficult with slides to show clearly what you mean but in the cave (?) You cannot see anything without a flashlight only the guides can have flashlights and it is crowded with the school groups going in and out.....
Rimpoche: so let’s see what happens tomorrow okay anyway so hopefully. I’m sure you’ll know what I understand there was some people who might have thought it was Maitreya Buddha but I believe it Avalokiteshvara that big one sitting in the big temple. That is supposed to be (?) Of Avalokiteshvara’s place in the middle there.
So the big (?) Is supposed to be Avalokiteshvara other than that I don’t know. I have never been there I’m sorry I could not make it with you. But if I did not go to (?) I would now be here tonight. (Rimpoche laughs)
The four locations
But not only that, I don’t like people carrying me. 002609
When I was sitting on the rickshaw I felt ashamed of myself.
then carrying (?) so then with that and I think you know really following the footsteps of the Buddha you have completed. The benefit of that is supposed to be by seeing the four important places not counting the Nalanda and Rajakia and Boches peak and the Mahakala place - not counting those. But the other four are the four most important. So if you see these, it says one does not fall in the lower realms one lifetime. So the Buddha does not tell lies for that..
So I think we should be very happy and appreciative. So it is worthwhile for you to have endured hardship. It is worthwhile for you to spend the money and it is worthwhile every day really. You can’t buy a guarantee which will prevent you from falling into the lower realm by paying a couple of thousand dollars. It is not possible.
But it is an opportunity. So there are difficulties there that it right A) it is India you have difficulty by nature by the culture custom itself. Nothing is certain everything is changed and the struggle is the nature and if you don’t struggle there something wrong in India.. Honestly! Everything even the bureaucratic (higher?) movements. 002824
Even the movements of the Indian leaders including (?) You always see it is coming, it’s going, it’s changing, it is all like every day it goes on, if it doesn’t - it’s not India. I’ve been here for 20 years so I know very well honestly very well.
Even the traveling route of His Holiness sometimes at the last minute if trouble barely started they will change turnaround and neutral and go somewhere else.
it is not a (?) reason but somebody who (?) so the order will take a little longer time to come down. So then the order came and we started take you go! So that’s what happens so here it is usual in India. So when the train does not go on schedule today, I don’t think the Indian people are surprised at all. When the train is on time they are surprised. (Audience laughs)
Finish the Lam Rim Teachings
So there is a little hardship so you have to think that way. Now let us finish the Lam Rim teachings, I think we should be reaching the Mahayana path. Thank you Anne so verse 14 verse 14 the page I have is 47 but of you may have different. What you have John? (They have an aside)
Rimpoche: Sem jey tay....
I am making it a little bit shorter, saying the Bodhimind is really the backbone of the Great Vehicle referring to Mahayana. It is also the basis on which one can accumulate merit and purification Lab sey chu....
it is also like a golden solution to change metals into gold of any virtue.
It is all accumulation of merit and wisdom merit. So you know that right merit and wisdom merit. Merit refers to any virtue that we accumulated and wisdom merit refers to any merit that is influenced by the wisdom. 003234
the understanding of wisdom that’s why it is divided. So also it’s called method and wisdom sometimes we refer to compassion and wisdom so this is what it is all about. Soun yeh goo...
Bodhimind boosts the power of both your good and bad deeds
This is also a treasure where we collect all the virtues. Collect doesn’t mean you pick up from somewhere and bring it over here. But every effort we make whatever it is because of the influence of the Bodhimind even if you do your daily chore of cleaning your room or washing your body or going to the bathroom even. It becomes a virtue because of the Bodhimind. So that is why treasure of virtue. So it collects it accumulates and builds positive karma like anything. It is. because of the power of Bodhimind. It is not just efforts that we put in alone. The efforts that we put in will almost get you nowhere honestly.
We try to do the best whenever we could we have to.. But that alone is not going to get anywhere honestly it is so vast so much you always have to have some kind of boosting power. The boosting power that we apply is the Bodhimind.
Bodhimind next happens and that is the benefit of Bodhimind I don’t want to talk too long here but read the first chapter of the Bodhisattvachayaaravatta the total first chapter is nothing but the benefits of Bodhimind.
So it’s a tremendous benefit. This benefit may or may not be the right word. I am really seriously thinking because it is some kind of..... it gives you some kind of boosting power within yourself. It boosts every deed you do good and bad works actually because you know if you do bad things with the Bodhimind within us is also increases tremendous power of the bad deeds. It goes against Bodhimind and it becomes very heavy and a terrible thing. It is also a good thing that also boosts up 003603
And it is really tremendous. So that is one of the best boosting power we can apply for every day of our life. It is the Bodhimind. Bodhimind- it is the ultimate unconditional unlimited love and compassion. That is called Bodhimind. The mind which has total dedication and is altruistic yet you yourself are seeking total enlightenment for the service of all living beings. That is Bodhimind. So this is what this one taught Heh deshimi
You have got to know this, by knowing this then the heroes who are Buddha’s children make Bodhimind as a major practice the main practice the main work they do is this Tey do shee....
So if you wanted to do Buddhist practice and you didn’t know what to do then do Bodhimind. That is it!. That is the main essence practice from Buddha up until my late Masters. Up to His Holiness after His Holiness all are doing that. That is the main practice. You know remember in the Lam rim teachings they said there’s no one....... They said everybody has some Yidam or deity (prefer?) to meditate or some mantra to say but has no Dharma practice remember?
The real essence of Dharma practice is to realize and develop the Bodhimind
Kadampa Lama said exactly. Everybody has something to think and meditate - a yidam, a figure whether it is Avalokiteshvara, or Tara or Yamantaka, Vajrayogini, what ever it may be. Everybody has something to point out something to think about. Everybody has some mantra to say moo moo moo moo you know. Even Oh mah lom they say keep on saying it right. But no Dharma practice. So the real essence of the Dharma practice is to realize and develop the Bodhimind. It is nothing more nothing less it is this. So if you want to be a good practitioner you don’t have call yourself a Mahayana Buddhist it does not matter. You want it to be good for yourself good for the others, Bodhimind is the key. As far as I know this is the only thing. Far more superior and better than mantra and Yantra and tantra. Without which yantra mantra tantra they won’t work!! They will not work! Even if it works it’s going to be very temporary, a tiny little thing here and there maybe. But this Bodhimind is the real thing. If you want to be a good person, that’s what you should look for.
Okay next is - if you develop the Bodhimind that alone is not enough. You have to act, you have to function according to the Bodhisattva commitments. You have to live up to this precious mind. The first activity is Jim bah dra....
The first verse says Jim bah dra....
Generosity
The generosity is the wish fulfilling jewel to fulfill the wishes of people. It is also the best weapon to cut the nets of stinginess. It is also the best way to build self-esteem and self pride (?) Self pride of the Bodhisattva. 004153
Sort brings generosity be nice. Great and we appreciate yourself and what you been able to do so that is what that means Nee ver tah
So being generous being nice, being great then you will appreciate yourself and what you have been able to do. So that is what that means.... Nee bah toh....
It also gives you a good name when you have been generous ten dah shee
So by knowing this Loo dah woo
You should always be very generous not only very generous with things that you don’t want or things that you think are going to go to waste and all that but you should be very generous for tah doh she ney...
Be generous with your physical body, your wealth and your virtue
Three things you should be generous with: your physical body, your wealth, and your virtue. With all three of these you should be very generous. If you look to these earlier teachers in history when you’re looking.
The Buddha, we did not discuss this today but the Buddha gave his body save the Tiger family and all that. So these are the examples of the great generosity. Great generosity and Iadowa the great Nalanda master. Iadowa gave his eye to a beggar who said I want one of your eyes when they met one day on the road.
When there was a debate going between the anti-Buddhist master and a Buddhist in Nalanda, he came and locked the door of Nalanda and challenged him to debate. In those days, debates are not like our present day debates. In the debates of those times whoever lost the debate had to follow the other. So the Kings and everybody else they would bring as witnesses. So after the debate they would follow them too. 004439
So what happened was there was a challenge to debate and the Nalanda pundits cannot challenge this one so they did not know what to do. So he sealed the Nalanda door. 004455
He would not let anyone go out of the compound’s main hall. He would make everyone sit in there in the main hall. When they could go out for a pee-pee break he would call each person and count them using a stick to count their heads 1, 2, 3 et cetera. Then when they would come back in-house he would count their heads with a stick 1, 2, 3 again. He would count everyone when they’re going out and count everyone when they’re going back. So they did not know what to do so they were hoping and waiting for Nagarjuna to appear again.
They were actually praying for Mahaghala, requesting that he send Nagarjuna here. So that is why Nagarjuna was sent there. So what happened was then they sent the message. They wrote down the message and put it on the torma and they were praying to Mahagala alone.
So then one day a crow came inside and picked the message up and flew. The Nagarjuna was in the southern part of India. At that time he had left the monastery to become a hermit in a little hermitage. Areadawa is also Nagarjuna’s disciple and he went with Nagarjuna. So the two of them were living in southern India.
So one day Nagarjuna was not so happy so Areadawa noticed and asked what was wrong. Nagarjuna said there is a threat and a challenge in Nalanda. Nagarjuna said I don’t think that there is anybody who can take that challenge. So I think I have to go. Nagarjuna said.. So then the crow came with the message and confirmed this intuition. Then Nagarjuna said see I told you. 004709
So Areadawa thought don’t worry about it I’ll go instead, I will manage. So Nagarjuna said I doubt it very much.. Areadawa said no no I can manage. Nagarjuna said alright let’s see. What will we do? I will take Chandakobi viewpoint and you and I can have a practice debate before you go to Nalanda. You and I will debate and we will see what happens.
So then Areadawa started debating and he said look you are my teacher I can’t debate with you. So Nagarjuna said okay then we will put a partition between, we will put a curtain in between so you cannot see me. So then you can keep on thinking that it is Chandrakobi there.
So then they kept on debating and Nagarjuna was saying exactly what Chandrakobi would say.
So in the middle of that Areadawa thought what’s wrong? This teacher of mine has completely changed, what is wrong with him? It may be really Chandrakobi so he opened the curtain and Nagarjuna laughed.
Nagarjuna said okay you can go and challenge him. But because you developed this doubt on me you will have one big obstacle on the road but you may be able to overcome it. So go so Areadawa came.
So on the journey this beggar kept on chasing Areadawa everywhere saying give me your eyeball, give me your eyeball, give me your eyeball. This happened all the way through so finally Areadawa said alright. So he I took out the eyeball and gave it to the beggar. 004904
It was very painful and all that. Then Areadawa walked away and he thought after a little while, I wonder what he is doing with that eyeball. So he looked back and at the moment he looked he saw that the beggar had two stones had smashed the eyeball in between the stones.
When you are generous never be attached to what you have already given away
So Areadawa said that is terrible and regretted giving the beggar the eyeball. But in fact the beggar was not a beggar but instead he happened to be Indira. So Indira appeared to Areadawa and said if you had not regretted giving your eyeball to me when I was disguised as a beggar, I would have given you a new eyeball. Now because of your regret, I cannot make you a new eyeball now so you will have to go through life with one eye. This is the result of your regret.
So that is why Buddha tells us when you are generous whatever you have given don’t regret afterwards. If you give it, you give it. It is no longer yours. Even Buddha himself said when you dedicate that is where the line is drawn as to what belong to whom. Pen nah new.....
When you dedicate, ownership has changed
The moment you dedicate it for whatever, actually the ownership has changed at that time. So no matter whatever happens be generous but don’t look back and regret. 005044
If you do so it is a waste as was Areadawa’s (effort?).. So Areadawa went then to Nalanda and all the monks had finished their PP break. The monks and were coming back into the temple area. and Areadawa went along with them. As they were re-entering, Chandrakobi was counting their heads with a stick aloud saying 1, 2, 3, and then he notice there was one extra. So Chandrakobi said, oh there is an extra bald head! Where does that come from? That’s the last one that arrived. Areadawa said that comes from the (gate?). So Chandrakobi said oh you are the one who is challenging me okay. So tomorrow (debate?).
So that is how Chandrakobi and Areadawa had a debate and the story of that debate you have heard many times.
An important lesson to remember
So Areadawa had to live with only one remaining eyeball because he gave the other eyeball and later regretted it. That is very important understand and to remember.
That’s why they call it hardship of the Bodhisattva activity. Sometimes it is very hard but as hard as it is that has benefit that has benefit to people anyway that is generosity Mo show wee....005219
That is how generosity has become the great activity of the Bodhisattva. That alone is not enough next is Tern due neh.....
Morality
So the second one is the morality. Morality is very important sometimes people ignore morality. But morality is also you know morality is very important remember when we talk about morality here (Rimpoche has an aside)
Tue den neh this one says the morality is like water that washes the wrongdoing. Nyem mon tue
it also gives you the cooling effects on the heat suffering of afflictive emotions. Hee woo....
People will respect you because you are already in morality Tup geh....
There are three moralities: the morality of accumulation of merit, the morality of helping/serving living beings, and morality of protecting yourself from negative wrongdoing
You don’t have to threaten people you don’t have to use military or economic power to draw people to you because your morality will do that job. People know what you’re doing they appreciate you so that is how you can. That is what morality is here. But then morality is three things remember? Accumulation of merit is one morality helping and serving living beings is another morality and protecting yourself from the negative wrongdoing is the third morality 005536
Keeping vows intact
so these three moralities, keeping together in one’s life contacting one’s life on that principle and then it is the morality especially keeping your vows and commitments intact. This is the most important morality. I don’t think unless you’re Buddhist monk or a nun.... also monks have more restrictions of you know..... I don’t think Buddhists take a vow of poverty. I don’t think we take a vow of poverty I never heard this. If you are a monk however, you are not supposed to accumulate wealth. The objection to wealth accumulation for a monk is that it will engage the time that you want to put into your practice. That is the major objection. 005704
I don’t think we think we take the vow of poverty. Sometimes in the west people have that understanding. So anyway, I don’t know what I’m talking about. (?)
So that is the morality important that is also not enough patience..... Survat a neh...
They said patience is the most important ornament for the powerful people. Powerful here is intelligent dedicated sincere and wonderful people such as yourself. These are the powerful people. Not political power or economic power or military power. We are not referring to that.
It is referring to intelligent lucky fortunate and dedicated people working through the spiritual path. These are who they are referring to. And the best ornament that you have, the best jewel you can wear is the jewel of patience (Rimpoche has an aside and they discuss an ornament or a statue of a horse the Rimpoche had that was broken)
So anyway so the best ornament is patience not the horse Nyumg moh du rey
This is also the best sacrifice you can make by taking this hardship. Patience is very very hard. Buddha himself has said there is no difficult virtue like patience and there is no powerful negativity like hatred. There’s no difficult virtue like patience Yong moh due rey....010057
Patience is also the direct antidote for hatred.... they said sha dong land oh
The word “Landdoh” here is referring to snake. The opposite of the snake is the Garuda which is a bird that picks up the snake and eats it.
So that’s why the hatred is like a snake, or a cobra. This is hatred and the direct opposite is the bird that picks the snake up. So patience is like the eagle that picks up and eats the snake. Eagle- like patience
Patience is the best antidote of hatred. If you have patience then hatred will not influence you at all! No matter how many people get nervous and they go bing bing bing bing and yak, yak, yak,
no matter how much they do, it does not relax and don’t worry about it the sky is not going to fall down.
The ground is not going to fall. You are not going to fall down there. The animals maybe you can’t cross the road whatever so what you go around 010233
Lack of patience - being impatience (nervous) is the doorway to negative emotions.
So if you have that much patience, it cuts the hatred. When you don’t have patience and you get nervous, that nervousness brings an opportunity for hatred, anger, jealousy all of them. So this is an important point... Getting nervous is the one doorway of inviting negative emotions. People normally don’t pay attention they normally don’t even think about it but that’s what it is. Okay Tuh boh sah...010324
So if someone uses rough and harsh words- you pay no attention no matter whoever it is that speaks to you that way. Don’t give respect to the harsh words, it doesn’t matter, do nothing, just sit there do whatever you have to do, don’t challenge. I think you know what I’m talking about. Is that a word that you have respect right? You have no respect what is that (they have an aside)
Rimpoche: What did the German guy tell you?
Audience: He was unpolite
Rimpoche: So Ujen was trying to hold the bus for you people and some people are not coming. In between that German (was being unpolite to Ujen) Our people were not there (?) and Ujen was holding the bus so the German started scolding him.
So he said nothing just sat there like that, don’t get angry (?) but let your own people go (?) So that is what you do! That is how the patience works. Do whatever you have to do and do it nicely. Never let it upset you or bring hatred and all this. If you get nervous then you get angry, you get upset more then you challenge. Then you get in more trouble.(?) The best thing is ...... Samsara sometimes Buddhists teach you (?)
That is how patience is applied. Sometimes it is better that you did not get it. We have not heard it - it did not go inside but it went off somewhere in the air behind the air, gone with the wind. It does not matter. If you take it in, then you think about it and you get more angry.(?) Because you will lose your peace of mind.010558
Patience is the key to protect yourself from all negative emotions
You lose and you develop anger you develop all this (?) So patience is the key for protecting yourself from all of these negative emotions. Actually all, anger, hatred, jealousy, obsession - anything. If you have patience you won’t, you won’t that is what it is...Tu sun toh.....
The best protection you can give yourself from this sharp weapon of harsh words is Sing goh sah.
So these are very sharp weapons that people use as a word you have to remember. But then one has to be careful here too.
Passive aggressive behavior is not patience but comes from anger
One has to make sure it does not become passive/aggressive. Sometimes it goes beyond and becomes passive/aggressive. If it becomes that it is no longer patience it is anger. 010730
Passive/aggressive comes from anger. Its nature is anger so you have to make sure of that. It is a very very subtle difference between patience and passive/aggressive. Okay some people say well he is losing and I kept cool - that is true passive aggressive. I sat there laughing and he became more angry - so that is passive aggressive.
So anyway this is patience next will be Leh dan deh...next is enthusiasm Men doh sem...
Enthusiasm
Beautiful if you have the enthusiasm which you never give up all your qualities - spiritual qualities will automatically develop. It’s like the rising moon. It is going to go from the first to the 15th it is going to increase day by day because you have enthusiasm.
I am very much lacking the enthusiasm me - this is me personally. I don’t have any enthusiasm at all. So out of these six I’m really lacking on this. I’m far behind much behind. I don’t have much enthusiasm. I have a wonderful patience but sometimes when you have too much patience you lose this enthusiasm. So no matter whatever happens (?) Nobody is going to hit you on your head or kick your butt. So sometimes we lose enthusiasm. So one has to be careful to ensure that enthusiasm is maintained. This is beautiful Gid doh den...
If you have the enthusiasm that never loses its attention then all of your spiritual development you will develop like a rising moon. That’s why it is a Bodhisattva activity. Loh do un....
Every activity in which you engage will be meaningful and absolutely useful. I keep on telling you that spiritual cannot be forced 011056
It will develop by (itself? yourself?) it will come these are the ways and how it will become part of you and that is how you (?) beh bela shay ney
So enthusiasm is anti-laziness. Laziness cuts enthusiasm and that’s why I become a couch potato because of the laziness. If I was not lazy I would not be a couch potato, right? So that is how it is really honestly. My being a couch potato is due to a lack of enthusiasm. Anything that you have to say or think I’ll do.. (If I have to move?) I won’t! That’s what it is. If you are hoping that whatever it is (?) you know tea or the reward - I am hoping it will come here. It won’t.
I know old some old Tibetan lamas keep a long hook to pull things. Anyway okay laziness also has three different (types?) Maybe I should’ve (?). The most important laziness is our addiction for the wrongdoings and bad activities.
Addiction to doing nothing is also laziness and addiction to wrongdoing is also laziness. This is because if you’re addicted so you won’t put forth any efforts to change. That is why it is the most important laziness. Okay so log sham ju
And that is very important for the Bodhisattvas to have enthusiasm. So that would be nice. Next is concentration Som bon sen....
Concentration - the King of the mind
Concentration is the King of the mind. It is the king that controls the mind. If you leave it, it’ll be like a mountain. If you send it, it is like a bird that will go anywhere. So it also gives you great pleasure physical and mental pleasure so that is the concentration and the meditation and the most important activity the Bodhisattva.. Next is Shiro sah vah 011500
Profound wisdom seeing the true nature of reality
The profound wisdom is the eye for the Bodhisattvas to see true reality. It is also the great weapon to cut the root of samsara. It is the quality that all of the Buddha’s teachings have praised best. It is the light to clear the darkness of ignorance with this the Bodhisattvas should have (?) Lam dee beh poh 011549
Six activities of the Bodhisattva generosity, morality, patience, enthusiasm, concentration, wisdom
So if you are an intelligent person ( put all moral?) emphasis on this and make the best use of them. These are the six activities of the Bodhisattvas: generosity, morality, patience, enthusiasm, concentration and wisdom. So see jee sam dah
First 21 tells you if you have concentrated power no matter how much you have it, it will not cut the root of Samsara. So therefore Shamatha without wisdom is almost useless as well as wisdom without Shamatha cannot do the job.
So all of them work together. You must have concentration and you must have wisdom. They have to work together. Concentration is the base and wisdom is the weapon. Concentration is the person who fights. You know the example of the horseman and the weapon. Concentration is the horse and wisdom is the weapon and the man fights. You know the horse fighting just like that. So you have to have both otherwise it won’t work. So not only separately but have to have together Tih jey hom
This one is emphasizing again the combination. Nim jah dam
First 23 is something very important you have to see it Nam jam dam lah
Space like concentration
When you are focusing concentration it should be like space-like powerful concentrations space is almost unending nothing blocks nothing obstructing nothing disturbs you it is open space. That is called space-like concentration. Then, after that it is like (sorcery activities?).
So those two work together this is important this is very very important. We have a lot of problems. Right now it might not be a problem. Later it will be a problem. If you can establish emptiness you will loose the activities. 011958
Physical beings activities. So you know this is a difficulty. So if everything is empty, there is no reality, nothing is real so then you (missed the point?)
And activities are as good as I’m here I’m existing everything else exists and when you see that way that is the space-like emptiness and sorcery-like working together. That is the key for Buddhist practice. If you have space-like too much then you lose the other one then it doesn’t serve the purpose (?).
That is what it refers to verse 23. Verse 24 Deh deh lah (he has an aside)
Like this also ends on result path that great path of causal result. Causal path is the Sutra path Bodhimind Bodhisattva activities we talked that is the causal part result path is Vajrayana so Tteh dah doo.....
So you need both of them. This is like the crown jewels they selected everything whatever was the best that was needed, in order together. So you need with the help of a great master to enter in the Vajrayana Show deh yon doh
To make your life worthwhile you need to do this. This is how I the Yogi have practiced you who are seeking liberation should follow this. Verse 25 lan geh yeeh lah 012348
In order to make myself happy and to help others too I show this path this practice that Buddhas like of how the Buddhas went by the easy way. And I also pray that everybody will follow and you should do the same thing. Thus we have completed this Lam Rim path today.
And those of you who have come with this. This will really substitute Lam rim teaching. So if you want to go to Vajrayana initiation or anything you can because you’re qualified to do so, okay?
thank you and most important of all we should dedicate our virtues. At this time we have quite a lot because of this (?). So I guess that’s it. So actually you have the footsteps of the Buddha thing here. Not here but before we get into Bombay So Bombay is the (?) Now we’re here and tomorrow we will go back to Bombay right?
And then the day after tomorrow we go to (?) So in the monastery you saw we have this Buddha image so we will be able to see it we dedicate this by offering (?)) they told me it is 8 o clock in the morning right (they have an aside and they discuss what they’re going to do in the next couple of days)
Then we have offerings to the (?) To which we are connected and then we have I have requested it for Locho Rimpoche to make offer of longevity of (?) Rimpoche he is 82 or 83 or something now? so that is over there and when we came back they did (?) that particular (?) Rimpoche longevity path only 012637
(?) and what else and there will be (?) and Mary actually invited Rimpoche to stay so maybe we should stay one night. See how they make (?). Monks are very easy to invite you to stay very good Okay what do they do? Monks get out of the room and give you the room, that’s all.
they give you special cases for sure. We will be able to get permission from (?) So I think that probably in case in old Tibet though not allowed (?) Has to go outside because I don’t think those monks will not stay (?)
one family has exception that is the Shata family who happens to be Tsongkhapa’s (benefactors? Beneficiaries?) so their family members can stay in any Gelupa monastery in the room where (Dalai Lama?) stays all the family is allowed and it is exceptional since 1357 onwards that is the only one family throughout Tibet. Okay so we will be looking forward again so then see you tomorrow so we should dedicate may all beings have.... what is it? Can you say it? Don’t sing it. (They close with prayers) thank you (they discuss when to return)
