Generating correct motivation

Rimpoche: Do kindly generate a pure motivation as normally described in the tradition of a Lam Rim teaching at least one should think for the benefit of all living beings the individual should obtain total enlightenment for which I would like to listen to this teaching and practice so teaching what you are listening is the Lam Rim teaching and particularly that of the New Lim or the Swift path and 001757

which is sort of a roadmap to the enlightenment and so as the Lam Rim itself here says those who are really seeking true enlightenment not just talking about it seriously considering that these are actually meant for those people and for which you have understanding of the lineage and the stages and so and forth confirmed and after knowing that developing oneself within that path so the first part is over the second which also has root of all development guru devotional practice and thereafter developing oneself first is over second thereafter developing oneself has two understanding the importantness of life and taking the opportunity and developing your self understanding the importantness of the life is over taking opportunity and developing yourself has three common with the lower level of developing common with the medium level of developing Mahayana way of developing self so out these three we are at the first level common with the developing self common with lower level that also has basically four understanding of impermanence in life and particularly death and dying and then what happens thereafter the sufferings in the lower realm that has hell realm suffering hungry ghost level of suffering and animal realm suffering and then thereafter developing the refuge and the understanding of karma out of these four we are at the second understanding of sufferings in the lower realm and that also has the hell realm and hungry ghost and animal

so hell realm has also understanding of hot hell cold hell adjoining hell and secondary hell realm all four are completed we are at the level of the hungry ghost level so as you know each one of these I also have done in session and in between session in session we have six preliminary prerequisites activities including developing field of merit seven (lamp?) offering field dissolving and dissolving to the five most important figures of each section and they all dissolving and finally the Blessing lineage most important figure the Tuwang Dorje Chang or the Buddha, Buddha Vajradhara dissolving to your root master and thereby giving birth to Gyem ney goon..... Tuwang Dorje Chang then focusing on Tuwang Dorje Chang making a seven lamp offering and begin to meditate searching for the reasons why we have continuous suffering one after another constantly continuously life after life and we begin to know we didn’’t think of the suffering beyond this life we did not think of the suffering in the lower realms and particularly that of the hungry ghost realm because the hell realm is over the hungry ghost realm so here now with the thinking of the Lama Gyem ney goon.....

Lama Tuwang Dorje Chang on your crown as a witness as a guide as an object of refuge as a subject that you can obtain this stage of Tuwang Dorje Chang so all this together and then begin to meditate the suffering in the hungry ghost level hungry ghost realm level and that also according to this quoting Nagarjuna Yidah dyan...

Hungry Ghost Realm

Then you know when you’’re meditating you know death and dying stage and when it is reversing and then if you found yourself suddenly looks like you’’re going to sleep and wake up and then you wake up in the hungry ghost realm level 002440

and that will be terrifying terrifying because as each realm has a lot of suffering the hungry ghost realm has suffering of hunger hunger suddenly if you found yourself and that physical form in that area I mean it will be horrifying particularly in that hungry ghost you have two types of hungry ghost one is called external obstacle external obstacle ones could not find any food at all in case if they find something suddenly that changes into something unusable remember Chandrakirti the great Indian master who are Nagarjuna’’s follower who are talking about this emptiness in his Madyamika text he says Chum bo roll lah.... any water that the hungry ghost looks sees it changes its nature they give example of a glass of water if you put a glass of water here when you have three different people looking at it three different beings looking at it simultaneously in one glass of water the Samsaric Gods look at the glass of water and find and they can consume as nectar human beings sees this as a glass of water and consume as water and serve the purpose of water the hungry ghost when they see this they will see blood and pus you can’’t use it can’’t drink it not usable and for them it is becoming blood and pus because of the karmic condition so the nature of the glass of water may remain as a liquid however because of karmic consequences one person sees as a nectar used as a nectar the other sees as normal water and use it as normal water serve the purpose of normal water another person sees blood and pus and they can’’t use it

and if they use it it is blood and pus so that becomes that is because of karmic consequences that’’s what it means even they find food or rivers or trees or fruit when they try to use it they can’’t use it ““A”” there is someone who’’s protecting it who says it’’s mine don’’t touch it or you bear the consequences then if there’’s nobody the reality of that changes into those things or to some people they just can’’t see it, it just disappears so anyway what happened is because of that reason they cannot use it they cannot consume and that is the external obstacle hungry ghost internal obstacle hungry ghost they have a very difficult to use if they find food they can’’t use it seventh Dalai Lama has written a book praise for Avalokiteshvara and then compassion of Avalokiteshvara and particularly at the hungry ghosts level he says Toh wah ree.... this is very good very effective to our mind Tor wah ree soo... 003026

so this hungry ghost they have such a huge stomach like a mountain like a mountain but their throat has a lot of knots so the food can’’t go through also their limbs are so thin almost like a straw so almost like daddy longlegs enlarged enlarged daddy longlegs and that sort of thing these are the karmic consequences if someone tells you is that’’s not reality no one can say it’’s not reality it definitely definitely because so people like to interpret at saying oh yes yes yes that suffering hell realm and all this there but we have them on our human land it’’s also true but these are also reality only when you know we take rebirth within that and then we will know but it’’s too late 003150

if we know by that time so in short in the hungry ghost level these are named hungry ghost they are hungry all the time but they cannot number one they can’’t find food number two even they found it they can’’t use it because that is their karmic consequences karmic consequences and then sometimes by some chance some food went through it started burning within your stomach then comes out like a fire out of your mouth not only that their karma is such during the winter it is so cold even the sun rays makes you feel so cold during the summer it is so hot the moon rays will also give them like a sun heat these are the karmic consequences honestly so these are real the hell realm is real hungry ghosts are real it is real and so not only that the length of their lives also a little too long a little long so in short if we take rebirth in that level that will be terrible what can we do nothing so luckily this is my meditative state almost imagining but not reality yet so but they are possibility of becoming that and right now it is in my own hand to make sure that I will not take rebirth in that level in the future so way and how I do it’’s number one we have to know what makes me to take rebirth in the hungry ghost level Yee das ah.....

How to get into the Hungry Ghost Realm

So the direct cause to take rebirth in the hungry ghost is attachment stinginess and being mean and taking things that doesn’’t belong to you stealing or whatever stealing so these are the direct cause of taking rebirth in the hungry ghost so and then when they realize I do not want these consequences and right now it is in my own hands if I have a cause which already created I can purify and make sure that I will not repeat I may be able to do this I may be blessed to be able to do this to the Lama Gyem ney..... Tuwang Dorje Chang 003625

bless me not to do this and purify that karma which I have already committed and making sure not a new creation of such a karma for me so light and liquid coming from the physical body of Lama Tuwang Dorje Chang enter into our body mind and speech purifying and also all living beings not only me as an individual but all living beings each one of the living beings will have Lama Tuwang Dorje Chang above their head and lights and liquid purifying all of them and then completely closing the doorway of hungry ghost once and for all so that is what you can meditate and not simply imagining but aware of the cause and keep it in mind and very often purifying

Animal Realm

and that is very important point and next will be suffering of the animal realm in case if we don’’t go you know if you’’re very powerful negativities they will give birth in the hell realm lesser powerful than that give the hungry ghost little less than that give rebirth into the animal realm the animal realm also has a tremendous suffering suffering is here it is the lack of intelligence lack of understanding a lot of people think my pet my animal is very intelligent it’’s true but I always say give your car key and let them do your shopping for you so that way you’’ll know so its capacity is very limited no way you can manage right okay no way because of their intelligence level is very less that was their suffering that is their major suffering and then on top of that then one eats another the big ones eat the small ones many small ones gets together and eats the big one and all this Tu dun nah ney...

Shantideva’’s dedication chapter, chapter 10 of Bodhisattva Chiaavadara about the animal realm they said Tu doo nam.... show the fear of one eating the other that is the biggest suffering in the in the hungry ghost realm (Hartmut Rimpoche says hungry ghost realm but I think he meant animal realm here) 003948

you can see all of these animal channels in television you can see them right and for us it may become entertainment 003956

a leopard running after a deer or something so ultimately they eat it right so can you imagine me as an individual self as an individual a little deer baby running with all the best power you have and then the big leopard comes and eats you up right? so this is the suffering no doubt about it no one will dispute that suffering or not and that suffering is the animal realm and there are a number of different categories now according to the Buddha you know 2600 years ago Buddha says a large number of these beings are in the ocean under the ocean in a very dark area they don’’t even see their own hand movement or something and huge a amount and they give different category they called them large inhabitants and those who are on the human land and they called them scattered ones Buddha called them scattered ones so whatever we see through the Animal Channel realms channel or whatever all these are the scattered ones but then you see in the deeper in the ocean that is 2600 years ago Buddha said right today we go down there we see it we saw them so it is sort of amazing that Buddha 2600 years ago could tell really all this I mean this is authored by the Penchen Lama but it is not the Penchen Lama who made it up the Penchen Lama got all this information before his and through his own meditation he put them in so it is the Tibetan Buddhism is such that it comes through the Buddha onwards 004223

the first person who discovered the first person who taught is Buddha 2600 years ago which proved to be correct today from the scientific point of view whatever physically we go there we see them now 2600 years ago nobody is going down there nobody saw it right but this guy tells us so this guy tells us that such sufferings are there you could take rebirth in there that’’s a possibility make sure you don’’t do it make sure you don’’t take rebirth because it’’s on your own head that’’s what he’’s telling so that’’s why his teachings are about it that is why samsara is suffering where ever you go you have the suffering opposite that Nirvana is peace it is free of that I mean it is black and white difference that’’s what Buddha shows us 004327

so there is so many sufferings where ever you go and then normal domesticated animals how we use them we use them we use elephants to substitute tractors and you know bulldozers and all that in almost every area you can see the developing or so-called developing nations and all these elephants we make them carry huge lumber that we cut it and make the elephants to carry them we use the elephants you know until they die and then the animals we use them to carry our loads and always and even to cut the roads you know when I’’m escaping from Tibet crossing the Himalayas and there’’s a large number of people were waiting to cut the Indian border and there’’s a little area other side of Tah wong and we are sitting I came there late morning reach there in that area by that time there’’s not so many people there maybe about in our group we have I don’’t know maybe 10 or12 people and there’’s another group and then there’’s a number of people who try to cross the thing and couldn’’t go so they are coming down so we are settled underneath the hill which is sort of a Himalayan hill and could not get through and we are sitting there and meanwhile it’’s so funny they’’re having a meeting in from our party and one of the monastery officials who was related to me my mother’’s not brother but I think nephew or something he went there and there’’s one government official and he is bullying everybody else in that meeting he say you cannot cross you have to guarantee you have no connection with the Communist Chinese or something he’’s controlling those people and then meanwhile there is 25 strong people with horses and guns came and they started going straight he tried to stop them you threaten me with a gun said you wanted to shoot me (Rimpoche laughs) that is funny so even that period they.bully each other even that period so finally we went up up and then you know went up by the evening almost you know 4:30 - 5:00 and no one can go anywhere and everybody doesn’’t know where to go how to go stuck there so then I remembered something I remembered something that I’’ve thought oh I heard before somebody is talking I overheard somebody’’s talking when you going to cross that particular hill you’’re not supposed to go here but you are supposed to take like four or five the mountain peaks and choose between fourth and fifth you have to cut across I heard that before I don’’t know why did I hear I probably heard somebody talking so then I said well that’’s what I heard maybe we have to go through that so then everybody lined up and then the first they send these yaks 004807

and then you know when later we get right over here the yaks couldn’’t cut and then mostly mules and horses do better so we use those animals to get our self through now by this time no question who it belongs to so it started going through and the right at the middle of the night on the dot.12 midnight we crossed 12 midnight because I remember the person was related to me and he looked at the watch and he said oh it’’s 12 midnight now I have to show the Chinese my butt (audience laughs) so he turn on the top of the mountain he wanted to show his moon that’’s what I remember he literally lifted up you know (Rimpoche laughs) and so 12 midnight so that’’s what happened so we used those animals even domestic animals whether they can carry or not and we don’’t ask them we just put them and push them beat them up beat them up beat them up right so and that is suffering for them for us it is making use of but for them it is suffering and can you imagine the other way around so I mean why not it happens and if you happens to be after death if you’’re born as an animal or maybe you’’re born as a yak if you think yes it’’s lucky and high attitude clean air clean water clean grass but more than that people use them then you know of course then kill them right, kill them for their skins for their flesh for their bones all these wonderful bone soups nutritious is somebody’’s body and all of the skins that we wear leather jackets and all of them are somebody else’’s skin and that way this is not our fault that is the suffering of the individual and that is the reality and when I born if I was born as a yak and somebody wearing the leather jacket could be my skin the bone soup they are drinking could be my bone soup so the sufferings are there everywhere everywhere so well one way to think that we have to end all of sufferings is a great way to think but it is also important make sure that our self I mean each and every individual us we make sure that I will not be subject for that this is. common with the lower level I should not be the subject for this 005221

this is in our hand right now we don’’t have to go and ask monks to pray we don’’t have to go and ask Buddha to bless we don’’t have to go and do anything it is in our own hand by cutting the cause when the cause and the condition to exist they need a cause without a cause it won’’t be materialized without condition it will not be materialized we have the power to handle this cause and the condition making sure that will not happen that is a spiritual practice for me that is dharma practice and that is the cause of taking refuge to Buddha Dharma and Sangha remember it’’s two causes the fear and the trust so this is the real fear of the hell realm the hot cold hot hell realm hungry ghost animal realm and if you’’re really afraid these are we have to be really afraid there’’s no point of fear that developing you know the monsters getting under your bed out or something that’’s for kids out of closet or something that has two types right the kids fear the monsters coming out of the closet and the grown-up people will also fear the monster coming out of the closet these days we see much more a lot of politicians one after another I don’’t know what’’s happening in the Republican Party all this coming out of the closet there is a fear there too but the real fear will be this worried taking rebirth in...;.. and then knowing what is the cause of taking rebirth direct cause negativity in general and particularly ah Tu doo jeh wey

so the direct cause to take rebirth in the hungry ghost is giving up Dharma giving up Dharma here doesn’’t mean I don’’t like Dharma they are not talking about that they are talking about it I am a Mahayana this Hinayana people will know nothing so look down on them I am a Vajrayana practitioner those sutra people knows very little or like that or even the even among the old Tibet is the (sectarian?) thing is really so much you know we go to the Gelupa people and they will say we are Gelupa’’s the pure refined gold like pure (?) and these people who are (Sochines?) And this and that all these horrible things you know 005625

and we look down on them too and they’’re only meant for the people who are in the remote area where we have a lesser intelligence and they can just cheat there but in general huge intelligence monastery area it is pure refined we are refined they are bad and you out of there if you want to practice it is the Dockchine and we do Gelupas can talk and can be very scholar but not develop (Rimpoche laughs) that sort of thing that is called Dharma give up on both sides giving up Dharma looking down on the other Dharma not only the Buddha Dharma alone even the spiritual paths if you look down on the Christians and particularly conservative people will look down on them so this is giving up Dharma there maybe their views we may not agree but it is not our business to look down on them or vice versa looking down on the hippies all that you know so and then disrespectful for Dharma and Dharma Masters and even you enter Dharma here meaning every spiritual teachings you have to think in that way rather than very narrowing discounting others you can’’t do that and then even after entering into the Buddha Dharma’’s path and then criticizing among the Sanghas to each other and creating schisms within the Sangha is one of those five unlimited negativities too so these are the direct cause to take rebirth into the animal realm (Hartmut did he mean Hungry Ghost Realm here?) so this time we have found a very important life difficult to find once we find it is very important in this moment 005909

And we have to obtain the (?) of taking rebirth in lower realm and general and particularly that of hungry ghost and the animal realm and this is the time for me to achieve the pure state of a Buddha and I may be blessed to be able to do this and light and liquid coming from the body of Lama Tuwang Dorje Chan Gyem ney goon.... light and liquid coming from the body of Lama Tuwang Dorje Chang purifying negativity in general particularly that of taking cause to take rebirth in the hungry ghost and animal realm me and all sentient beings completely purified and then finally Lama Tuwang Dorje Chung dissolves to our self and I become a Buddha and at the heart level of that me the Buddha moon disk which has a mantra mala of Om muni muni maha muniye soha Om at the center Om muni muni maha muniye soha radiating a light from the body of me the Buddha reaching to every existence every existence everywhere just by the touch of the light all environments become pure inhabitants becomes a Buddha and left for the heavenly boat light dissolves to our self and rejoice the result activity of purifying every living beings and that is how we conclude one session every session you should really begin with the seven (limb? Lamp?) and end with this and in between session also focus on the subject whatever you are focusing read about it and think about it particularly if you read Pabonka’’s liberation that has quite a detail on this and Tsongkhapa’’s Lam Rim Chemno will have a quite a detail on this particular subject so somehow if you build up your meditation on this by the end of this teaching we should have something to show solid within our own although we do have a sort of one-week gap and sometimes even more so I was planning not to come next week and because traveling is a little difficulty but then I also realized week after that is a summer retreat and then I’’ll be going to Malaysia so I won’’t be here so I will be here next week and next Thursday I’’ll be here and that will probably be for the time being and then the summer retreat those of you who are coming to summer retreat welcome it will be on compassion and its activity 010358
