0:00:05.4 Mandala offering
0:00:26.7 Thank you, now we continue where we left. The mantra recitation. We have just had the circles, the chakras at the heart level and we have done that. Now, you have the external protection wheel. There are a number of different visualizations and meditations and all of them are there, but even saying mantras, although we introduced you straightaway introduced you to saying OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA, but there was a great Amdo lama in the early 1900s, who had come from the Amdo area and remained in Central Tibet during the 13th Dalai Lama’s period. His name is Chöne Lama Rinpoche. Both, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Ling Rinpoche called him Chöne Lama Rinpoche. Chöne is his hometown and he is from there. He is a great teacher, so they call him Lama Rinpoche.
0:03:49.3 I don’t remember his actual name. He remained in Central Tibet in the later part of his life. And that was the period of Kyabje Pabongka too. At that time in Central Tibet almost every teacher at that time was taking teachings from Chöne Lama Rinpoche. He was also a wonderful poet. Finally, His Holiness made him do the editing of the new xylographic prints of the Kangyur, the Collected Works of the Buddha. He was asked to edit that. It took a lot of great scholars and teachers, like the famous Geshe Sherab Gyatso. He was the first editors. He also wrote the beautiful poetry in between the different sutras.
0:05:45.3 Later, somehow it did not fit very well with the 13th Dalai Lama. Somehow Geshe Sherab Gyatso Rinpoche had a little difficulty and finally he left for China. By the time it was the 1950s the Communist Chinese took over in China, Geshe Sherab Gyatso was in China. When HH the 14th Dalai Lama visited China in 1954, almost everyone, including both teachers of His Holiness, Ling Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche, plus all the cabinet ministers, plus all of those happened to be Geshe Sherab Gyatso’s students. Anyway, the Tibetan government did not allow Geshe Sherab Gyatso to come back, because he was praising the Communist Chinese. He was praising particularly Mao.
0:07:11.7 I recall one of his poems:
Mao Tse tung che je dam pa te
Shakya Senge de la nak pa yi
Ku a röl pai che ke tu ma je
Jam pel ke pa lo dro da ka tung
The great human being known as Mao Tse Tung,
Buddha will praise him in Buddhism,
Such great qualities, many of them,
I, the living Manjushri, saw it.
That’s a beautiful poem (laughs). Anway, since Geshe Sherab Gyatso dropped that, His Holiness, the 13th Dalai Lama, asked Chöne Lama Rinpoche, who happened to come from Amdo to Central Tibet, giving a lot of teachings. So His Holiness wrote a note. In those days they used to write notes on a little blackboard, covered with dust and they had a name for that, I forgot. They put dust. They did not write with white chalk on the blackboard. They put dust on it and write with a pen into the dust so every message was written in there. So you are supposed to read it and then wipe it and thereafter there are no copies left. That’s some kind of old Chinese or Tibetan culture.
0:09:28.9 So His Holiness, the 13th Dalai Lama wrote to Geshe Chöne Lama Rinpoche [and the message was delivered], while he was giving a teaching. It is said that one of the 13th Dalai Lama’s messengers came in riding his horse, while Chöne Lama Rinpoche was giving the teaching inside the hall. In the traditional culture, Pabongka also received those things. So Pabongka got up, prostrated or folded his hands and then picked up the message, put it on his head, read it and then replied. That happened to Pabongka a couple of times. Chöne Lama Rinpoche from the Amdo area did not even know this culture. He said, “What is this supposed to mean?” Anyway, in that message His Holiness wrote, “If you are a learned scholar, do not hide behind the mountains. Come and appear personally in the capital. I need someone to do this work. ”
0:10:46.2 So Chöne Lama Rinpoche told during the teaching, “The Dalai Lama has given me the most prestigious position. For me the single poor monk, this is the heaviest punishment.” That was his reply. Anyway, I have been telling you Chöne Lama Rinpoche’s story and what I really wanted to tell you I forgot.
Chöne Lama Rinpoche said, “you have those chakras at the heart, you don’t enter at the center, you enter from the side, that means the last mantra chakra will be Om ye dharma….the essence [of dependent arising] and will go into the Sanskrit consonants, then finally into the Sanskrit vowels, and then go into OM TARA TUTARE MAMA AYUR PUNYE JANA PUTIM KURUYE SOHA or TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA or whatever. Similarly, when you stop the recitation you do the same thing. He called it is like a snake circling. When snakes sleep, their whole body, from tail to head, altogether, is made into a little round thing. The snake sleeps that way. Chöne Lama Rinpoche said it is like the sleeping snake style. So you read from the last rim, then go into the second rim, then go into the third rim and then say the mantra, whether the longer or the shorter one. That is one thing.
0:13:33.0 Then also radiating light from the mantra. It is mentioned here:
The brilliant red light radiates from the HRIH at the heart of Lama Amitayus, collecting back the essence of inexhaustible vitality and powerful blessings of body, speech and mind.
When you are saying the mantra, if you yourself are in Tara’s form, then from the physical body of Lama Amitayus in general and particularly, from the hand implement, the life pot, light radiates, tremendously powerful light and collects the vital energies of our life. During the initiation yesterday we had that, remember. So the light goes. In your simple visualization it reaches almost every multi-galaxy everywhere, collecting the energies back, bringing them back. Light reaches there, pulls in all the energies of earth from all the multi-galaxies, particularly not only the blessings of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and buddhas and bodhisattvas of the 10 directions, but also your own energy that has been contaminated or list by various means.
0:16:49.0 We will only think about physically what happened. But sometimes psychically, so many different things happen. Psychically, people even smash their life strength or power or even the real life source itself, in various ways. Buddha himself made it very clear. The non-human beings, spirits, ghosts and all of them pose a tremendous amount of threat with us. Then Buddha made it very clear that there are impure materials. Now you can call them toxins through which we lose a lot of our vitality. Also, through mantra, through black magic, through all kinds of things we do, that’s what we don’t pay attention to, that’s what we don’t even accept or acknowledge, but it does happen.
0:18:28.2 Not only does it happen, it affects us. It affects our health, our life, our work, our sexes and everything. Then we have the karmic effects too. We have a lot of karmas, a lot of positive karmas and negative karmas. Positive karmas sometimes don’t link up but the negative ones do. When the negative karmas link up they take their consequences. All of those, after all, are dependent arising. They depend on conditions and enlightened beings do have power to be able to help, to connect with the right karma. Pujas make a difference, as you all know. For Communist Chinese pujas don’t make a difference. They told us, “The Tibetans are very good at wasting their butter. All the butter is melted and put in butter lamps. They play with them, decorate with them and make offerings.” That’s their understanding, that’s their way of thinking, because literally, burning a candle or butter lamp makes no difference to you; it is a waste of butter – for the Communist Chinese. So is candles.
0:20:26.6 We all know, even in the West we do burn candles. We do into church and light all the candles, don’t we? It’s not only the Tibetans who light butter lamps. They all do that too, right? But for Communists that is a waste of candles, a waste of butter and all that. But in reality, it really does make a difference. We know that ourselves very well. Even in Jewel Heart itself, when difficult times come, a little puja makes a big difference. We know that in our own experience.
0:21:26.6 Many of you may remember, when we were buying the building in Ann Arbor. His Holiness was scheduled to be coming in April [2008]. This was January and we didn’t even have a building. Everything worked out boom boom boom, including the city approvals. They were bending backwards and we got everything. So sometimes the pujas do make a difference, with our experience, at least my experience. Anyway, as much as they can help they can harm too, those who want to harm.
0:22:20.2 That’s why protection; not only protection but also energy collection. Particularly, life energy itself, and luck, fortune and all of those. Sometimes it decreases tremendously. When that happens, it changes overnight for people. You know that very well. In general it is impermanence, specifically it is dependent origination. You don’t have to think very long. Just think about this Dominic [Strauss-Kahn] guy, the IMF chief. He was in charge in the afternoon and by midnight, boom, he was out.
0:23:26.4 That really shows how impermanent it really is and how dependently originated it really is. When the conditions changed he landed in jail. That’s exactly what it is. All these things happen. That’s why the subtle energy and all this. Plus luck and fortune too. That is also changeable, as we just saw. That’s why through spiritual – not really spiritual, though it is part of spiritual, but through the mind, through mantra, through meditative power.
Similarly, there are so many of them. Also purification of broken vows and commitments through mantra that we do, as we demonstrated yesterday. Vows and commitments are the basis on which we keep our luck, fortune and everything. When that is broken, the basis is shaking. That’s why repairing that is important. That’s why in Vajrayana everything is magical, no doubt. However, the magic is based on vows and commitments. That’s so important. That’s why during the initiation they take the commitments, not only once, but twice, three, four, five, six times, even sometimes seven times, because it is important. Every effort we put, it is the vows and commitments.
0:26:03.6 In Vajrayana, if you keep vows and commitments intact, even if you can’t do much
Yang dag kye wa kyö ne ngö drub nye – as the 5th Dalai Lama said. If you don’t achieve this life time, then at the time of death or in the next life, at least it is guaranteed to achieve our total full result within 16 life times. This is all based on keeping commitments and vows. And it’s extremely difficult to keep them. We break them so many times. Like Atisha’s story. When he traveled through Tibet, suddenly the caravan had to stop, because he said, “I need to purify.” Two, three years ago Jewel Heart did this skit of Atisha riding with a caravan on a horse, except our horses were sticks. I thought a bunch of broom riders had come in. I am just joking. A bunch of people were riding a stick and getting off the horses and started to do purification. Remember? When everybody was coming in on a stick I thought they were all coming in on brooms.
0:28:01.6 Anyway, so even Atisha had downfalls. One of the Tibetan teachers at the time of Atisha, asked him, “Do you get downfalls?” He said, “Yes, I do, not only I do, but I get downfalls of Vajrayana commitments like snowstorms. I get Mahayana broken commitments here and there. I get very seldom broken self-liberation commitments. But Vajrayana ones like a snow storm.” If Atisha, the great Bengali teachers, the keeper of Vikramshila’s teachings, gets that much, we are bound to get them. There is no surprise that we have broken commitments and vows. But we have to try to repair them. So that’s why during the mantra recitation here that is here also.
0:29:28.5 It comes through the light of Lama Amitayus. Similarly building our energy, physical energy, through the four elements. I mentioned that yesterday during the initiation. The earth element, the water element, the heat element, the air element and the space elements, all of those, physically our bones and flesh are earth element. The liquid in our physical bodies are water element, like moisture, everything is water element. The heat and digestive power, etc, are fire element. Movement, circulation, etc, are air element. Then also space is the space element. Rejuvenating those elements in one.
0:30:51.2 You know all this, so I am just simply mentioning a little bit. Along with that you also have particularly for White Tara the six shields that you create. That is: from the mantra chakra at your heart level, along with innermost self in the letter TAM form, are radiating white light, filling up the surrounding area and your physical body completely with white light. What does this white light do? Purify negativities, obstacles, illnesses, everything. Also not only is your inside fully purified and repaired, but you also develop the capability to do that for others. Then the white light goes out of your physical body. When I say that light goes out, it doesn’t become empty inside, but it expands the white light, up, down, to the sides, back, front, everywhere. Almost the size of your body, let’s say 6 foot, or 5.5 or whatever. Out there forms a white light shield.
0:33:31.6 It is like a big ball in which everything is white light. Then also think that not only have you developed to be able to pacify everything within you, but you developed the power to be able to help others to do that. Still, the light is constantly coming more and more from the mantra mala at your heart level. Then it begins to take a golden-orange or yellow hue, like pure gold color. Within the white light it becomes to get the yellow effect and fills up your body completely with this golden light. This is the activity of prosperity. Your life, your energy, your luck, your fortune, everything, and finally inside the light is all golden-yellow, real sort of raw gold color that is shining, natural gold color is coming.
0:35:36.2 It not only builds up your own prosperity and whatever need to be built up, life, health, wealth and even capability of even art work, poetry, whatever, anything. Then the light begins to flow through the whitish shield and goes out of the white shield and forms a golden shield out there. Between the two shields of white and gold light you probably have them at same length. 6 feet up to here and then another 6 feet. In between those two shields here is a space in which there are a number of utpala flowers floating. When the flowers are coming closer to the white shield they all become white. When they get closer to the golden shield they all become golden color. The flowers are flowers, beautiful, wonderful, no doubt. But if someone with wrong and terrible intention comes, for them it becomes a deadly weapon. It has that capability.
0:37:41.5 That will be much worse than the ninja wheels they throw. Then suddenly, the golden light keeps constantly coming from inside, and begins to pick up orange color, bright red-orange. In Tibetan it says tse chok le ba zin gi nam pa. That’s how the Chinese paint all their doors, that very bright orange-red. That gives you power, the power to be able to overpower internally your own negativities, negative emotions such as anger, hatred, jealousy, etc. In that category. Similarly, externally, those powerful demi-gods, samsaric gods and even those Hindu-Buddhist mythological gods, if necessary you are able to control them by your power. That red-orange begins to go over the white shield and the yellow shield and forms another red shied beyond that yellow one.
0:40:02.9 While the red light is still radiating at your heart level it begins to pick up blue color. Blue here is a very heavy, thick, a little darker royal blue, not light royal blue, but dark, the physical body color of those wrathful yidams and protectors and all that, - that color. If pacifying, prosperity and power cannot control, then if you have to engage in wrathful ways you will be able to do that. Not only you have developed that, but the light goes out and develops the power to be able to do that with others. Outside the red shield there forms a blue shield. While the blue light is coming through your body, suddenly it start picking up green light. In Tara’s case it is multiple activities. That does not mean miscellaneous. I used to think as kid that meant miscellaneous and therefore not so important. But when you begin to look in there it includes total enlightenment, ordinary and extraordinary accomplishments and all of them. So it is multiple but not miscellaneous, very important. It is bright, emerald green, not the dark, heavy, overpowering funny greens, but really nice, bright, beautiful emerald green.
0:42:55.5 Multiple activities, whatever you need, including total enlightenment, is capable to be delivered by you, for you. That extends and goes outside of the white, yellow, red and blue shields and then forms a green shield. Then while the green light is radiating, suddenly you have this rusty color come in. Chöne Lama Rinpoche said that the rusty color is a mixture of – I don’t remember, sorry – for us in Tibet it is easy, we say the color of liver. That doesn’t mean much in the west. Chöne Lama Rinpoche said it is a mixture of maroon plus white, I don’t remember more, I have to look in Chöne Lama Rinpoche’s notes. When he gave these teachings Kyabje Pabongka took notes. I might have that in this book here.
0:44:40.3 Sorry, I may be wasting your time now. I did find the notes but not what I am looking for. The notes are like this, cut, cut, cut. Anyway, it doesn’t matter, it’s a couple of colors mixed and then becomes that rusty color. So then this rusty color is to stabilize the achievement you have achieved, make them stay with you. We may say to make them permanent. Whether they can be made permanent or not, but not easily lost. Whatever you have achieved will remain with you. And the rusty shield goes out of the green shield and is toned down. This is my personal understanding. You don’t want to be out there, saying, “Hi, lalala, I am here!”. So you are toning it down. The maroon rusty color is not going to be that much, sort of toned down a little bit. So anyway, those are the six shields.
0:47:00. You can meditate that, the 6 shields as well as to be able to help others. There are a number of others. I may have to mention them because they are mentioned here, these external shields. I do not know why I have that here, but it says for example:
A ten spoked protection wheels surrounds me. The upper spoke is marked by OM, the lower by HA. Above the 8 horizontal spokes are TA RE TUTARE TURE SO. While the spokes are spinning they destroy all evil forces and sparks incinerate all obstacles.
That is – I didn’t put it there, but that is an additional protection rim.
0:48:31.8 You yourself are in Tara’s form and you have the mantra mala and everything and then this almost looks like the uncommon protection rim from Yamantaka with the 10 wrathful deities. It is very similar to this. You are situated in one of those – for Tibetans it is easier because we say it is the big cymbal, that huge noise maker, two cymbals put together. For Westerners, what is that big cooking thing you have? A Tajin, that Moroccan thing. It ehas these long tall end and covers like this. It looks like two Tajin covers joined together, up and down. We do have drawings in the transcripts.
0:50:45.1 A number of you have the drawings available, so that’s good. Two of them are joined, but merge into one piece. And 8 sword spokes come out horizontally. Inside you are like in Captain Kirk’s command bridge on the starship Enterprise. You are sitting right at the center. Each one of those spokes going out. It is like on these pillars there used to paintings. It almost looks like that. When you are sitting here you will see each one of the mantra letters be earmarked where each one of those spokoes come out. And above is OM and below HA. So it is OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA. Then the spokes run around. In Yamantaka’s uncommon protection wheel you have deities sitting on the tips of each double-edged sword, but without touching.
You can put mantras there too. Inside you see what mantra it is, outside you see what it is. If you put mantras out there, they should not touch the swords, because the swords are spinning and the mantras would be running. If you do that you will get some mental trouble. You will start spinning your head. That’s why the mantras remain above and they don’t run, only the swords run. The rest is at is says here.
0:53:55.8 Since it is here I have to mention it a little bit. Then the recitation. There is also the short Amitayus mantra: OM AMARANA ZIWENTIYE SOHA. Then you have the long Tara mantra OM TARE TUTARE MAMA AYUR PUNYE JNANA PUSHTAM KURUYE SOHA. That means My life and wisdom and luck may increase. Ayur is life, punye is virtue, jnana is wisdom. Pushtam kuruye is prosperity. So basically that is the longer mantra. If you want to say a couple of thousand mantras you can say one mala of the longer mantra and then mostly focus on the short mantra OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA.
0:55:14.5 If you only want to say one mala, then say 25 of the longer one and the rest say the shorter one. Finally, whether you are capable visualizing yourself in the form of the yidam or you are just in your normal form of a regular human being, you are then focusing on Tara in front of you and totally focus and totally rely on Tara. Every time you say OM remember the body, speech and mind qualities of Tara. TARE TUTARE TURE – that is the essence of Buddha’s teaching of the Four Noble Truths appears as the physical being Tara who may help me, bless me and having devotion for seeking help. On each mantra totally focus as much as you can.
0:57:15.0 Tara is capable and will help and you are capable and it will make a difference, without any of those mischievous thoughts and doubts coming in. If you totally focus on that, even if you can’t do other visualizations, keep the total focus on Tara and the mantra. Ultimately rely on her, near the feet of Tara, almost like in the Lama Chöpa where you:
You are my guru, you are my yidam, you are my dakini and dharma protector….
Keep on making single-pointed requests and it will make a huge difference in your life. Even if you have worries and difficulties, then think: Tara will help me and guide me and take away those worries. If you have light and liquid coming from Tara it washes away all negative physical conditions, mental worries, emotional disturbances. You obtain the blessings of the Lama inseparable from Tara and her blessings are settling and you become happy and peaceful.
0:59:33.3 But if you are just saying a few mantras and you think that will make a difference that is not going to happen. That’s why I said: have no doubt, no mischievous thoughts and have enthusiasm as well as patience. If you don’t have patience and you say a few mantras and want all the benefits to materialize just like that it will never happen. It never has and it will never will. So with total focus keep doing the practice. We do have a number of people who have said over a million. I appreciate all of you and if you keep on doing that, not only will you be happy and achieve the material goals of your life, but your future life’s too. In future lives Tara will be always your guide and there will always be that connection.
1:00:51.9 That’s what I like to share with you today. So that’s what you do. Then at the end, whatever mantras you have not said properly or all of them have to be purified by the 100 syllable mantra, OM PADMASATTVASAMAYA MANUPALAYA….SATTVA AH HUM PHAT.
Not just one, but if you say a lot of mantras, then say that at least 3 times. If you are saying 100 mantras, maybe do the 100 syllable mantra once.
Then offerings: argham, padyam, püpe, dhüpe,
Then the praise. That’s the same old praise again. So that’s about it for this practice. What I didn’t do was the questions and answers.
1:03:03.0 Audience: there were questions regarding how to do the practice whether you are initiated or not initiated.
Rimpoche: I thought I answered that yesterday.
Audience: People know whether they are or not, but they have a lot of questions.
Rimpoche: Well, if they are not, then they are not. Okay.
Audience: What are the steps to initiation?
Rimpoche: Oh, you know Jamgön Lama Tsongkhapa gave those in Foundation of all Perfections:
THÜN MONG LAM JANG NÖ DU GYUR PA NA
THEG PA KÜN GYI CHOK GYUR DOR JE THEG
KEL ZANG KYE WÖ JUK NGOG DAM PA DER
DE LAG NYI DU JUG PAR JIN GYI LOB
One who trains in these common mahayana practices
becomes a vessel worthy of the supreme vehicle, vajrayana .
Empower me that I may quickly and easily
arrive at that portal of fortunate beings .
That’s it, that’s the answer. So you need the common Mahayana path, at least the Three Principles.
1:05:12.5 Common with the lower level, medium level or Mahayana, at least renunciation, bodhimind and a little bit of wisdom. You can’t perfect, you can’t be an expert. If you become an expert or perfect you don’t need it, but at least have a proper understanding and try to meditate and develop a little bit and that is the common Mahayana practice and then you become a vessel worthy of becoming Vajrayana.
Audience: What is Vajrayana?
Rimpoche: The Lines of Experience says [words not found in the root text, quote probably from another text]
De ne dzo sang gya tso chö pa la
Sam mo dor je tek pa parchin te
Nam par nye ö sang nga par chin ne
Zhin tu kye par pag pa nyin no che
Nyi ma da wa da wo kun tu tra
In order to achieve enlightenment,
There are two vehicles, the profound Vajrayana and the Mahayana.
The Vajrayana is the most important, known to the learned ones
As like the sun and moon.
1:07:12.8 Also read a little bit here and there, if you have never been here before.
Audience: For people who have taken this teaching but are not initiated, how can they practice this sadhana?
Rimpoche: They can practice exactly the same thing. As I said: use the front generation, not yourself [as deity]. We have the Prayer to the Noble Tara practice on page 18 of the Jewel Heart Blue prayer book. That’s exactly what you can do.
Audience: So they should not do the blessings of the offerings and the offerings, and so on?
Rimpoche: As I said this morning, ordinary beings cannot bless ordinary things. What would be the purpose of one First Noble Truth touching another First Noble Truth? That’s how it is.
1:08:51.5 Audience: How do we block ordinary perception?
Rimpoche: Just don’t look at it [laughter from audience]. Yesterday I said, remember, in the vision of the state of meditative equipoise perfectly concentrated on absolute truth there is no relative [truth]. It’s not that any relative truth is not there, but it’s just that you have blocked it. You are not thinking about it. So don’t look!
Audience: We have been doing the Jewel Heart Prayers from page 11 in the prayer book. What should we be visualizing? If you had an initiation should you be visualizing yourself in deity form with mantras at the heart? Would you dissolve the refuge field into yourself and things like that? Can you give some instructions?
Rimpoche: I have given instructions on the Jewel Heart prayers a number of time, but basically it begins with the Heart Sutra essence mantra GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SOHA. Then you take refuge. We talked already. Then you the invocation: ma lü sem chen kun gyi dön kyi chir…We have the English translation: you who destroy all evil forces…..
That is the King of Magadha’s daughter who went to the South somewhere as a bride and then invited the Buddha and her king there gave permission to invite Buddha. It was perhaps 100 miles away. So she stood on the roof of the palace, holding incense and started saying this prayer. Buddha was dwelling in Gya ke kye ser, which was somewhere in Bihar and he said, “Tomorrow we have to go to lunch with the King of Magadha’s daughter on her invitation. Only those who have magical powers can go.” They sent this wooden stick around to pick up those who were able to go. Then the next morning they came all in flying on their horse carts through the air, or just simply flying with their monk’s robes and all of those and that was a true incident that took place during Buddha’s lifetime. Ever since then this particular invocation is considered one of the best. A lot of people do that. That’s that part.
1:12:48.9 Then you have the seven limbs, which we have already talked about today. Then you have Buddha Shakyamuni’s mantra OM MUNI MUNI MAHA MUNAYE SOHA. Don’t let me explain, but it’s thub pa, thub pa thub pa chen po – one who has conquered the internal delusions, the self-cherishing and who has obtained total enlightenment and thereby also conquered the imprints of delusions.
I used to say MAHA MUNIYE SOHA.
1:13:40.9 But Kyabje Lochö Rinpoche told us to say MAHA MUNAYE SOHA. He brought up Kunu Lama Rinpoche Tenzin Gyatso to support this. In any case, that is Buddha Shakyamuni’s mantra.
Then NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA…is Avalokiteshvara’s long dharani – not a mantra. Dharani and mantra are different. I don’t have time to explain that tonight. Then we have OM MANI PADME HUM, which you know, I don’t have to explain it. Then OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA you also know. OM ARAPACANA DHIH is Manjushri’s mantra. The DHIH has to be said 100 times in one breath, DHIH, DHIH, DHIH…..If you really want to count you put a counter after 25 beads on your mala and count four DHIHs for each bead, but you have to have 100 of them said without taking any breath in between. The visualizations for that mantra can be found in both, the Yamantaka and Ganden Lhagyema teachings. If you do that it will be very strong Anti-Alzheimer’s.
1:16:09.7 You may forget immediate [short term] memories, but the longer ones will remain with you. It is for memory. Manushri is not only for wisdom, but also you have the DHIH 100 times. With that and the proper visualization you can almost overpower Alzheimer’s disease.
I normally don’t say those things. I am almost like a non-believer in that way, many times, as you people know me very well. But the DHIH DHIH DHIH seems to be working, honestly. That’s what it is.
1:17:16.2 And then that’s it, then comes the dedication with “May all beings have happiness….” and so on. That’s the Jewel Heart prayers.
Audience: On the subject of the breath you just mentioned, that also pops up in a number of questions about vase breathing and vajra recitation. Can you practice those independently of a sadhana?
Rimpoche: It’s always better [to practice in context of a sadhana]…you know a lot of people do it independently and then it becomes like a branch of a business activity. Hatha yoga becomes something else. Mindfulness becomes something else. Compassion and love or kindness and compassion becomes something else. So if you take everything as bits and pieces and here and there and commercialize them I don’t know what will happen in future. So it is preferable not to. That is also meant for serious persons doing this practice. It is not just for…..and that happens a lot nowadays, especially with kindness and compassion and mindfulness.
