Rimpoche: Those emotions, then, the thoughts are about to be negative.

(Transcriber’s note: The translation is longer then the above Rimpoche’s teaching, so, think that the earlier Rimpoche’s teaching is not in the beginning of this sound file.)

Rimpoche: For example, a thought come, you want to do something. You wanted, before you act, while you are watching your mind. You say, why do I think that? Is that coming out of influence by hatred? Is this coming out of my obsession? Or is this coming out of my jealousy? And when you say no, no, no, if you tick, tick no, no, no, no hatred, no obsession, no jealousy, then you say last thing is, is, not last thing, second last thing, is it ignorance because I don’t know anything or because I am wrongly informed, that also possible. And then very last, am I dominated by fear? Am I afraid? So, if you are tick all nos, then, it can’t be anything else. But positive or if not, at least neutral, sure is not negative. When you say watching mind, and that is what I am talking about.

Rimpoche: Many times, we do, we do things, because if I do this, it makes him difficult, whoever the him he be, make him difficult, or make her difficult. I need to do this. Give him ???, and give her a hug, when you are doing this, maybe you are playing good one, bad one actually you are angry. So, you wanted to make the other people to have a little more difficulty. So, you wanted to do that way, so that is become difficult for that person. Which is what I said hatred, influence, thought. Every good person will know that. Honestly, it is nothing secret or mystical. But it is every day we deal our life. Every person will do that.

Rimpoche: I mean, last, a while ago now, 8 years, we have a war in Iraq, right? And that, and every moment, everybody has come out to be, to hurt Iraq. Whoever, maybe neutral country or everybody, 1. because your push, 2. you have economic consequences. And 3. is your side and their side, all this thing came, so, everybody had that thing. And that is influence by hatred as well as obsession.

Rimpoche: A lot of good thinkers, right-minded people, don’t like war, don’t wanted involved. I am sure a lot of Dutch, like any other English, American, European, or Eastern European or whatever, Asian, whatever, a lot of people don’t like it. But somehow there is a huge swing comes in, and nobody can resist. And also fear dominance, you going to be killed. You going to be killed. So, so, fear dominates me, you going be killed, mean you won’t want to do anything.

Rimpoche: I live in the America. And, the America that I know, was a great freedom lover, a choice, freedom, individual right, liberty and all that. Even, we remember here, one of the American guy, young guy, who came here, who last time sit inside here, in this very room. He come out half way through, he, no, I am American, I don’t have to be here, so he get out. So, that sort of thinking people have. However, when this 911 came, and all this thing come, everybody so afraid and when you taking the plane, take your shoes off, yes sir, shoes out. Take your jacket out, yes sir, jacket out. Take your pants down, may be (Rimpoche laughs). So, so much fear dominates people, and people are, such a people who will appreciate, enjoy individual right, freedom, liberty, we also when you are afraid, willing to take your shoes off, shirt off, and that is fear domination.

Rimpoche: And this is, you know, one of the old, old congress-man from Detroit area that’s where I live. Detroit area, probably have a hip replacement or something, and going through the metal detector, the plane, but ??? much people working and watching him right, going through. And the machine was old, off hook, so he is out, take off everything, finally even pants out, go through, oops, and so somehow there was a newspaper guy happened to be there, know who the person is, took a picture. And next day, I saw the newspaper, the guy with the t-shirt and a little boxer, and standing there. (Rimpoche laughs.) So, so, so, fear does that much.

0:12:28.7

Rimpoche: So that is why these are called negative emotions. But then, on the other hand, every fear is nothing. Because I, I talk about fear. So, sometimes every fear is not necessary that bad either. If you go through downtown Detroit or even Amsterdam, fearlessly, I am fearless and walk around and somebody came hit you on the head and poke your pocket, poke your pocket and that fear is not that necessary bad.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:13:46.9

Rimpoche: I have been through that in Amsterdam too. (Rimpoche laughs.) So sometimes, these fears are not necessary that bad.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: But, let’s not go in that story. Okay. But fear dominate, decisions are really not that great.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, we called these are negative emotions.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, the negative thoughts, produces result of negative. The result negative is our action, our action that influences by negative thought will be wrong. It hurts people, it hurts you yourself, though you have done to protect yourself, but for a long run it hurts the self, a short time, it hurts other people. So, that’s why is called the negative. So, that’s what thought you are watching to protect yourself not influence by those.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:15:50.7

Rimpoche: So, recognize negative thought and its influence. And try to make yourself not in their control.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: That is important for yourself.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Then, replace those negative thoughts by love or compassion. Then it becomes important for others as well.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, first, Tibetan Buddhism within individual is watching your mind, watching your mind, that mind is not been influenced by those negative emotions and try to make sure your mind influence by positive thoughts such as love, compassion, care.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:17:50.6

Rimpoche: When you say I don’t care, is not good.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: I know is against love and compassion. And, but you overly care, poke, poke your nose too much and that also not right.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Get my daddy nose out of your affairs.

Translator: Oh, how to translate that?

Rimpoche: (Rimpoche laughs.)

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, anyway, that is the beginning of Tibetan Buddhism, and then addition to that, in addition to that, on that basis, then praying little bit.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: And then purifying our negativities little bit.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: And that is how people get on the road.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: The essence I told you earlier hour, what is the essence of Mahayana, what is the essence of Vajrayana, what is the essence of Theravadin-yana, so here now, on this basis, you try to become internalize those essence.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:20:10.2

Rimpoche: Then, what you not to do, what you not to do, is, I mean, what you do is try to help as much as you can. And what you not to do, is don’t hurt anybody.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Don’t hurt anybody means, including yourself because you are also a human being.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: No matter how much you look down on yourself, but you are good human being, and don’t hurt yourself too.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:21:12.5

Rimpoche: We do, we can’t hurt other people because they beat you back. But then we hurt ourself because it is my life. It is my life I can do whatever I want to do. So, hurting yourself is hurting human being.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, again, be kind, be compassionate, be care for everybody and don’t hurt anybody including yourself.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:22:09.1

Rimpoche: And on top of that, learn a little bit.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Meditate little bit.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Try to be peaceful little bit, yourself peaceful.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: And above all, be very happy.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: Honestly, you have such a beautiful life, such a beautiful environment, such a beautiful friend, if you are not happy today, when you will be happy.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: So, be happy yourself is your gift for yourself, making your life miserable is you are torturing yourself.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:23:26.5

Rimpoche: Religion or no religion, Buddhism or no Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism or no Tibetan Buddhism, but make yourself happy. Enjoy your life, honestly, you earn it.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: That’s all I have to say. But thank you for coming and if you have questions maybe one or two, we take.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: And I have been coming here for 25 years, the community over here giving tremendous support such as yourself being here. So, thank you, honestly, thank you so much, and hope I give you little bit of service to you, make you little bit of happier, make you little bit of gentle, little kinder to yourself.

Translator: (In Dutch)

0:24:58.8

Rimpoche: And thank you for the translations by Marianne and Collin, everybody else, because without which, I don’t communicate with you. So, it is really like a ‘toad’ going through, up and down. So, thank you so much.

Translator: (In Dutch)

Rimpoche: I should have learned Dutch.

Audience: Clapping

Rimpoche: Thank you. That is it.

Translator: (In Dutch)
