GR: So, let me take the opportunity here to wish everybody happy Mother’s Day. (DT) If you are not mother. Ok. I don’t know whether there’s a Father’s Day too. (DT) Just it happened to be not today. So, we basically before the lunch we’ve been talking about what to do. You know, we said, to do something. But the question of what to do. That’s what we’ve been talking. (DT) What happened there? Is there somebody missing or what happened? Somebody left or what is it?

Audience: (unintelligible)

GR: Huh?

Audience: (unintelligible)

GR: Who, who was there?

Audience: (unintelligible)

GR: She’s here but. Oh, you moved here.

Audience: She moved there.

GR: Yes, alright. There you go. You two changed. Yeah. That now. And you came now. There was somebody else there. Who was it?

Audience: (unintelligible)

GR: Oh. That’s what. One is there, but Robert was sitting here. What happened to him? Where did he go?

Audience: He had to go to his concert

GR: He got to go to concert. Ok. Alright. Anyway. Someone’s missing there. (laughs)

Audience: (unintelligible) still missing

GR: Who?

Audience: (unintelligible) She got food problems

GR: Who?

Audience: (unintelligible)

GR: Oh. He’s sick. He’s sick. The kid’s sick and she’s also getting thing, you know. Yeah. I keep on getting, forget your name. Yeah.

Audience: Martin

GR: Martin Luther King? Junior?

Audience: That’s his name.

GR: Alright. Incarnation. No. Seems a little too soon, isn’t it? Maybe. Who knows? In the spirit, perhaps. Good. Alright. So, now, I think that should be enough about the first Noble Truth. We really spend long time.

0:03:03.4 And then the second truth has also been mixed in together. I should. I’d be failure if I don’t say it. The second truth is the cause of the first truth, which is the truth of suffering, which basically karmic cause and delusion cause. (DT) Thank you for jumping. I forgot. Really. And the karmic causes. There’s a lot of karma teachings going on. And karma is something which everybody talks about it. And there’s a karmic relationship. Relationship between individual and karma. Karmic relationship between the nature and karma. Karmic relationship between nature of reality and karma. So, all sorts of things are available, around. And so, I don’t really need to say much. But one thing I would like to say. Karma is something that you don’t look separately than yourself and your action. Not so much yourself. But your own action. (DT) Are you cold?

Audience: No.

GR: A lot of people would like to look at karma as somewhere around other side. Some kind of mystical thing over there. And somehow you are connected or you’re not connected. And that’s the wrong view. (DT) So, karma, you have to look within you. And every action that you do, you’re creating a karma, whether it’s good or bad. Whatever it is. (DT)

0:06:06.4 A basic characteristic of karma is like four qualities. Karma is definite. (DT) And fast growing. (DT) One does not meet karma if you do not create it. (DT) If you create it. No matter. Whatever the time it takes, somehow it will materialize and get you. (DT) Good or bad. (laughs) (DT) That’s about it. But basically, karma definite means. You have a question? Ok.

Audience: Little one

GR: Little one? Let’s see how little it is.

Audience: (Dutch)

Translator: She says that you said that you don’t meet karma if you haven’t created it. And then she says you are continuously creating karma, so you will always meet it.

GR: Don’t look at karma as one thing. There’s a multi-million karma functioning together. (DT) It is like. It’s not one single little thing. It’s called big giant monster called karma. It’s not. (DT) It is multi-million different things happening every time everywhere. Functioning together. Popping up everywhere. Creating and completing. It’s going on simultaneously, millions of them. (DT) And that’s why I just now said, don’t look it’s something over there. (DT) That’s what it is. (DT) When you are very hot and air is blocked and tight and difficulty When somebody opened the window and door.

0:09:01.9 And then it is, I get relief. It is the result of one karma. (DT) And when somebody is cold and near there and shut the door or window or something and everybody get stuck. That is another karma. That’s what it means. Multi-million different karmas function. (DT) Or vice versa. Anyway, doesn’t matter. So, that’s what it is. Ok? So, that’s what I mean, don’t look karma as something giant over there. And sort of have to deal with you. That’s what I mean. (DT) And it’s not one big thing, but multi different things functioning all the time. Every part of life. Everything what we experience. Everything what we do. Everything what we act. It is functioning there. Creating. Completing. Creating. Completing. Everything’s going on all the time. (DT) Get idea of karma? (DT) Anybody have any question on karma? Have you ever met Mr. Karma yet? (DT) Or Miss Karma. (DT) Uh-hum

Audience: 0:11:11.8 (?) continuously (?)

GR: Yeah. So, you made it. (DT)

Audience: I still don’t understand it. For example, (?) And you, (?) why you do all the wrong things.(?) 0:11:28.5

GR: Who said so?

Audience: I say so. As an example. As an example. 0:11:35.3 (?) you doing a lot of wrong things in your life.

GR: In there. Ok.

Audience: What is that 0:11:41.1 (?) with that (DT)

GR: Can you answer that question? You didn’t even hear it?

Audience: Yeah

0:12:03.0 GR: You did. Ok. (DT)

Audience: It’s a good question (DT)

Translator: Her answer is, those things you do. Whatever pushed you.

GR: Is karma

Translator: That’s what she said is.

GR: That’s true. It is karma. So, again, you might have born as a human being with one karma. But with your life running, there’s a millions of different karmas running your life. It’s not one karma runs throughout. And every time whatever you are doing, you are creating karma. And every time what you experience, good, bad, everything. Even the cool breeze in the hot. Or warm air in the cold. Every single damn thing that we experience. Sorry for using the damn word. But. In our life, it is the karmic thing. So, in other words, if you breathe, it is karma. You go to toilet. It’s karma. Everything. Whatever you do it is karmic consequences. Every single experience we have it is the karmic experience. (DT) I also like to add up on this, not only our daily life experience. But even extraordinary experience. (DT) Unusual experience. (DT) Whatever it might be. Any different experience with the light. Experience with the. I don’t know. Ghost.

0:14:59.7 Experience with God. God, ghost, light. What else is there? Anything of; anything unusual. Mystical experience. Any one of them are again result of karma. (DT) Then there’s another question. Oh, if it’s my karma, then I can do nothing. I let the karma take its own causal time. Wrong. (DT) Karma is definite. Karma is fast-growing. One meets with karma one’s created. One will never meets karma if you’re not created. However. Karma depends on conditions. (DT) So, the conditions you never meet, the karma will not materialize. (DT) So, that’s why you still have freedom. (DT) The karma is huge. Karma is powerful. Karma is monster. Karma is behind you. Karma is in front of you. However, you still have control because you. If you avoid providing the condition, karma can do nothing. (DT) Suppose, if you have. We do have a karma to have a stomach problem. (DT) Alright. And if you take care of ourself, eat the right thing, keep it warm and do the right thing. And no matter how much karma over getting stomach problem may be there, you’re not going to get stomach problem. (DT) So, karma depends on the condition. (DT) Ok. Before we analyze, let’s call (?) it.

Audience: Well. Far as you believe there is 0:17:54.6 (?) I don’t know whether it’s true. I wanted to check with you.

0:17:59.3 You could also argue that the rising of conditions. The 0:18:03.5 (?) of the rising conditions are also karmically predisposed. So, where is the freedom? Another point is. If karma is created within samsara, it is contaminated. How can it lead you to liberation? (DT) (Dutch)

GR: Answer to the first question is the egg comes first or the chicken comes first. (DT) That’s the usual question. Alright. Without a chicken, there’s no egg. Without an egg, there’s no chicken. (DT) That’s the question. (DT) Yeah. As far as the second question’s concerned.

Audience: 0:19:19.8 satisfy (?)

GR: I know that. That is the nature of the question.

Audience: You can also argue that conditioning is other names. These just (unintelligible)

GR: Not necessarily. Conditions not other name. Condition’s condition. Whether it is other name or not. It is condition’s condition. And it is very much like egg and the chicken; which comes first. Absolutely. There’s no difference between that too. And then let me say about the second question. I don’t mean. I’m not going to dismiss your question by saying it is chicken and egg question. But it is chicken and egg question. But I will not dismiss that. I will try to come back and talk to you. But as far as the second question is concerned; it is a very serious question. And serious in the sense, every karma is not definitely contaminated. However, you may think, since it is in samsaric nature it is contaminated. Maybe so. But every karma is not negative karma. There are positive karmas. And the positive karma’s again; again like a condition. Meets with the. Meets with the wisdom when it influences. And it becomes uncontaminated. I mean that, even the contaminated nature. 0:20:49.3 (Tibetan: sa je…) According to the Abhidharma, the way you put this contamination and uncontaminated it differs to the Chittamatrins, mind alone schools

0:21:09.1 and then there’s the Buddhapalita differs with the Bhavaviseka and all this big complicated question. Even the word of contamination and uncontaminated. Basically, sort of general view is that when it is with the; touched with emptiness it becomes uncontaminated. Without touch it will remain contaminated. Basic view. So, don’t let go in detail. But according to the Abhidharma. That’s what it is. The Tengyur was different on this matter. However. So, even it’s a contaminated karma. (laughs) Even it’s. Maybe you should do it.

Translator: I don’t want to (Dutch)

GR: Even contaminated. Even it’s contaminated, addition of the positive karmas will lead to the liberation because of the motivation. Because of the influence. That’s why we make the motivations are extremely important, emphasized. Because that makes difference. And about the chicken and egg question, I really don’t know what to say. Which comes first? The chicken come first or egg come first?

Audience: I know but, there is no answer to that which first, the chicken or the egg.

Translator: But it depends on which chicken and which egg.

GR: She had an answer for that. She said, it depends which chicken and which egg you’re talking about it.

Audience: Which one comes first. 0:22:58.0 There is end (?) the chicken end(?) the egg

GR: Well, if you kill all the chickens then there’s an end of it.(laughs) No more eggs will come.

Translator: That’s right. That’s right.

GR: That’s ok. Yeah.

Audience: Because if you have the power to act (?) a problem

GR: Just one minute.

Audience: I’m sorry

GR: Just one minute

Translator: Just one moment please.

GR: Ok. (DT)

Audience: (Dutch)

0:24:26.4 GR: Now about the. About the conditions concerned. It is true. Conditions is karma too. However, conditions, we have a; we have a right. We have a choice whether we provide the condition or not. And there’s a lot of freedom in that. And. Yeah. Definitely, we know. We do know. We do know, if you’re going to have a stomach problem, you eat the right thing and look after yourself. We take echinacea. What is it? Echinacea. What it is? The drop you take. Dr. Bakshi’s preventing. Liquid drops you take. (DT)

Audience: (??) 0:25:10.7

GR: Yes. Essence. Echinacea drops; all this sort of thing, you take it. (DT) I also believe the karmic function is such a thing that it clicks like a clock. When it clicks on certain time it will go pritza priza pritza pe pe. Right? It is just like that. Karma also clicks. When it clicks you can’t do anything. With a clock, you can hit and stop. But karma, you cannot. No matter whatever you do, doesn’t work. It’s because it’s been clicked. And before it clicked. Before it made noise, you always have the right and choice to do whatever you could. You can adjust it under or try to put stop on it or do whatever. It’s just like that. You do have. You can manipulate karma. And some people think manipulation is bad, but it’s not necessarily that bad at all. You can manipulate. I think that is the freedom what we have. (DT)

0:27:14.3 Theoretically it may have a problem. But practically it may not have problem. (DT) Anna Lessus (?). What is it?

Audience: You said before that karma will depends and (???) understand how can you. If you stomach problem karmic with stomach problem won’t you,(???). (DT)

GR: Sure. But if you can avoid the condition, you won’t get later either. (laughs) (??)

Audience: I thought karma is definite.

GR: It is. The definite means. The interpretation for that is once karma has started functioning, then no matter whatever you do, you’ve got to go through it. That’s what it really means. (DT) And I know it is disturbing you. However. However, if you don’t do that, there’s a huge problem. You create another God. So, that’s not the one. That’s not one. That’s. And I shouldn’t have said in blank (?) 0:28:45.6 like that. It may help or may create problem. You know. That’s what reality. It’s not. So, therefore karma is also dependent arise. Karma is not fixture. It is dependent arise. Karma depends on condition. And we depend on. We’re all dependent arise. We’re not independent arise. Everything is in dependent arise. Yeah. If you avoid right early enough. It can avoid. Karma is. The negative karma is avoidable. Positive karma is avoidable. Everything. And karma is always not negative either. There’s also of positive karma.

Audience: So I have to. I was . I thought the same thing

GR: Yeah. We said that. But sooner or later it will do. Yeah. But remember now, that’s the main thing. I said, don’t take everything literally when the book comes out. You know. So, the interpretation. The meaning, the explanation, and the analyzations. All of them. If you have to take everything literally, then it becomes boom .

0:30:01.5 And then you have to interpret. Then you have to make new one. So, then you become old testimony, new testimony and you get all these problems comes up. You know, really. (DT)

Audience: (Dutch)

Translator: Now. (Dutch)

GR: Now. Mr. Hoberman. Didn’t you raise hand? You did. Ok.

Audience: 0:31:12.5 (?) The word. I have question You talk about karma now. Talk about the law of karma or the result of karma. To me are two different things. to understand it properly. For example, (?) 0:31:48.3 So, can you explain a little bit how when you say karma, (?) is talking about. To me it does not appear (?) because these things go together now. (DT) (Dutch)

GR: Very good question. It’s true. When you think about karma, what are you thinking? That’s really question. Are you talking about the result? Are you talking about the karma itself? Or what are you talking about it? (DT) I don’t do like that already. (DT) The. When we are talking about the karma. When you talk about the karma, I think we are talking about karma that what we create of the result.

0:33:05.7 The causal karma. And we’re also talking about the result, what we experience. And we are talking about it, what had happening in between the result and the thing. And when you mentioned the wind blow the curtain, you see the curtain. You don’t see the wind. It’s true. We see the curtain moving. We don’t see wind; doesn’t have a physical appearance. But it has energy which pushes. The curtain moves. And so, we’re talking about that moving of the curtain. We are talking about the wind itself coming. We’re talking about the wind circulation in the room. We are talking about the still wind. All this. And very similarly karma the same thing. We are talking about the causal karma, the result karma, function of the karma. Characteristic of karma itself. When you’re talking about the characteristic of karma itself; how it functions, what it makes difference to the individual. Actually, the most important thing is what it makes different to the individual That is the very important point within the karma. Whatever it might be. (DT) Basically when you say karma, there’s a general karma and a specific karma. General karma system and the specific karma. Both the general karma and the specific karma also have common karma and individual karma. (DT) Individual karma. (DT) So, if you started opening them up, there’s a lot of detailed things to see. But if you sort of leave it in general, then you can see the general things. (DT) So, the talks like this, we probably deal with the general karma. We don’t think we can open it up, each box and see how it is functioning. .

0:36:05.8 I think it is during the Lam Rim, during the meditation, I think you do pick up and you do need to look into it. But basically, when we’re talking about karma part of the whole thing, it is a general way of; general functioning. And then, in the, if you see the general functioning and almost all karma functions the same way. Funny thing is, almost all system of functioning is almost the same for all karma. (DT) Ok? Mr. Hooperman?

Audience: I think it makes a little bit more sense. Because I just wanted confusion about what we’re talking about. 0:37:22.3 (?) Gravity

GR: Gravity

Audience: Gravity. I mean if you know the law, then you have to be careful you don’t fall. But there’s nothing to say that’s good or bad in the law part of that. I mean, now it’s just that. I mean, to me to accept the karma exists as the law. That’s (?) (DT)GR: Ok. (DT) Ok. Ok. That’s fine. I’m sorry. I’m not talking to you. I said ok. (DT) Alright. So, let’s. Let that be enough about it. And I’m sure. Sorry, but don’t expect we have answers. Don’t expect we’re going to solve all our problems in within two days. It’s not going to be. But it’s a very good to raise those thoughts in your head and then think about it and then come and deal with your life and see what category it is following. How it is functioning.

0:39:02.7 Where one should make corrections. Whether it is karma is right or wrong. I can’t say that. But whether the karma is blue or green it doesn’t matter. And what does matter; it is how it’s going to affect me. And what karma affects me. And that is the individual matter. And that’s where we call it, individual responsibilities. (DT) The individual responsibility comes out for the individual, saying if I don’t like my problems and I like to see where it is coming from. And you see it’s coming from karma. There’s no question. (DT) And whether that karma is made of. Why did I make such a stupid karma? What did I do it? DT) So, you have taken one step back from the karmic cause to the delusion cause. You know like the second truth has the cause of truth; cause of suffering. It is karmic cause and delusion cause. (DT) So, it is not me, but it is: my delusion made this. My attachment made me do this. My. I know it’s not good for me. I know it’s not good for her. I know it’s not good for him. But I did it. I got to do it. I did it because my attachment made me do it. People say that all the time. Don’t they? (DT) They always say this. I’ve got to do it. Otherwise, I have to protect myself. I’ve got to do it, because I have to protect her. I’ve got to do it, because I have to protect him. You know what I mean. People say that all the time. (DT)

0:42:02.4 So, it is an indication that naturally you’re knowing. Your good human naturally you’re knowing that’s not the right thing to do. However, you can’t help it. You’ve got to do it. (DT) However, you’ve got to do this. And then you don’t like it. And then you cry. You fight with yourself. You do all these problems. It is something very usual in the West. Everybody does. Not only in the west. Even in the east. It’s been done (?)0:42:38.7 (DT) So, this is what the delusion causes. Overtaking the karmic cause. The driver on this particular car is the delusion. (DT) So, yourself and your karma become the driver, the passenger. (DT) Right? So, that’s what happens. You know, two people go in the car. One of them say, I like to go this way. And other say, no, this is not good and blah, blah, blah. So, whoever’s driving has the more right. You know go that way. (DT) I’m sorry. I’m copying you. (laughs) (DT) I notice I’m picking that up from you. (laughs) So, anyway, that’s what happens. And so, it is very similar. The intellectually or really deeply you know it. It’s not the right thing to do. But you can’t help it. You let it go. You can’t help it because your delusion is more powerful. (DT) Does that make sense to you people at all? It doesn’t correspond with you at all? (DT) I’m sure everybody have that problem. Who doesn’t have it? (DT) I’ll be very happy to see any hands comes up. Who does not argue within yourself with between this knowingly it’s right but got to do it. (DT) Everybody will do it. Those who think they will not do it, they will also do it. Ok? (DT) They will. You are the one who doesn’t think you’re doing it.

Audience: I have a question

GR: Oh. I may have to jump now, you know. Ok. One question

Audience: If you say, you know, I have to do it. Just the reason (??)

0:45:07.2 GR: Whatever it is. You know the reason isn’t a reason. Maybe good reason, maybe bad reason. That makes difference. No doubt. However, good or bad, the reason is an excuse. Yeah. Really, true. Absolutely true. Whether it is good reason. Even then it is excuse. Whether it’s a bad reason. Even then you didn’t excuse. And basically, you have the right to do everything. Whatever you want to do. No one can make you to do something which you don’t want to do. And that is bottom line. So, any other excuses you use. You make yourself to do it. Or somebody else makes you to do it. Whatever it is. All are excuses. And no one can make you do something which you don’t want to do. Keep that in mind. It is always like that.

Audience: They can make you want to do it.

GR: They can make you want to do it. That’s again, it become a little bigger excuse. (laughs) That’s really true. So. What I’m talking about now? Where did I get it? (DT)

Audience: (Indistinguishable)

GR: But you can’t help it sometimes. It’s because you lose the power to the delusion. (DT) Or you lose the power to the pressure. You get me? And that’s, that’s how delusion causes karma. (DT) That’s true. Attachment will pressurize you to say this. Attachment will pressurize you to do funny things. You know. (DT)

0:48:02.0 Anger will pressurize you to act as such a funny. (DT) So, you know it. You can do it. You know it, you shouldn’t do it. But anyway, you do it. (DT) So, this is the losing of independence of me. (DT) And your; you’re making your anger to do whatever the anger wants you to do. You’re not putting your foot down on your; for your own sake. (DT) I know you’re picking that up. I know you’re picking that up. But you know the reason why you are picking it up. You begin to pick up the life experience.

Audience: I think it’s a mistake. But I always am thinking of extreme.

Translator: examples

Audience: examples. That sometimes got

GR: Somebody got to do it. (laughs) Yeah. Anyway. So, that is how it really. The delusion force creates karma. (DT) Are you people with me. On this side. Ok? No problem. A problem. Of course. Ok. So. (laughs) Ok. So, now, let’s move up. Let’s move up. And so. Ok. That is the delusion. That is the karma. That delusion it works; creates karma. Can we also create positive karma? Of course, you can. (DT) And the difference between the creation of the positive karma and the negative karma is, positive. Creation of the positive karma needs training. (DT) And creation of the negative karma; you don’t need training. (DT) True. Because we’re already trained. (DT) Very well. (DT) Whether it is extreme or not extreme. But we have been trained quite well in it. (DT) Now, for every positive karma that we wanted to create, we have to put tremendous efforts. (DT)

0:51:05.1 First, you have to acknowledge. Second, you have to convince it is good thing to do. (DT) And third you have to fight with what you want to do, do. (DT) So, that’s why it is hard one. (DT) Now, let’s see. What kind of positive karma can you do? (DT) Ok. Let’s look into it. What does. Let’s look into it. Let’s look in, what does a bodhisattvas do? (DT) Ok. How many people are familiar with the term? How many people are not familiar with the terminology called bodhisattva. (DT) Ok. I have, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Ok, eight out of seventy. Whatever it is. Seventy four, five? Seventy five people. Ok. Eight out of seventy five people. Alright. Ria, Maria, Maria. Yeah. What do I do? Eh?

Audience: what does a bodhisattva

GR What does a bodhisattva. Ok. The bodhisattva is a Sanskrit name. People who have bodhi minds are called bodhisattvas. (DT) Ok. That. Now the question rises, what is bodhi mind? (DT) Because you have to go like this. What is bodhimind?

Audience: Enlightenment?

GR: No, no, no. No. That’s why I’m raising this question. Enlightened mind and bodhimind is two separate things. Though it sounds like bodhi and connected with the Buddha. (DT) How do I say? Bodhisattva’s are the passengers with the confirmed ticket. The passengers with the confirmation number. The passengers with the confirmation number and passengers who have ticket with the confirmation number on it.

0:54:09.7 Translator: Ok. (DT)

GR: Ok. The train is going to go to enlightenment. (DT) Ok? It’s like going from here to Amsterdam. So. And the train is going to go to enlightenment. But they are bypassing Arnhem. Is it? Don’t they? They go through by Arnhem. Right?

Audience: Yeah

GR: They go by Arnhem. Like the bodhisattva train. The train going to enlightenment but it also bypasses seeking freedom and the principal of the Four Noble Truths. Like two stations. (DT)

Marjon: (Dutch)

GR: (DT) Ok. And why they are called bodhisattvas. Because they have a particular commitment. (DT) And commitment of helping others. No matter whatever it may take. (DT) And in order to help others, you need the best tool available. (DT) So, you need to go to Amsterdam to get the tool. (DT) Ok. So. So, the meaning. The bodhisattva’s meaning and totally committed passenger. And seeking the best available of the enlightenment. Why you have to seek? Because you are committed to do best job for everybody. (DT) Sometimes I’ve been wondering what the senior peoples are thinking when I say funny things like this. (laughs)

Audience: (indistinguishable)

GR: Alright. Yeah. Oh yeah.

Audience: (indistinguishable)

GR: (DT) Have you paid? Did you pay for it? (laughs) DT)

0:57:08.8 Just joking. Ok. Huh? Oh, he said, do we have ticket. I said, “Did you buy it?” (laughs) Just joking. Ok. So. Get it now? The rough idea. Rough idea. (DT) So, why you have to buy the train ticket. This question comes. Do I have a train ticket? I don’t know. You have to buy the train ticket. Why do we have to buy train ticket? Because you care for it. You care for other people.(DT) This metaphor might not be working so well. You know. Really. You care for the other people to help, to do whatever you could do to help them. It is not right when I say whatever you could do. But you are committed to do, to deliver enlightenment of total freedom, total joy, total knowledge to everybody. (DT) Why are you committed? (DT) To deliver enlightenment or total benefit to all people. (DT) Because of your compassion. (DT) This is what it is. Because of your love. (DT) Because of your compassion. (DT) Makes you to commit that. (DT) Get it? When you love somebody, you will go out of the way to please the person. Don’t you? (DT) By the way, have you ever fallen in love before? (laughs) This may be too personal. Don’t answer that. (laughs) So that’s what it is. When you love somebody. When you care for something. You go out of the way. You do. For the person. Because of your love and because of your caring. (DT)

1:00:06.5 And if you have a limited care. If you have limited love. You will do the limited thing. (DT) And if you. If you don’t care. If you don’t love. So, why should you bother? (DT) Are you with me? That’s what it is. Now the bodhisattvas supposed to have unlimited unconditioned love and compassion. (DT) So, it doesn’t matter. Whatever it may takes. I am going to do it. (DT) Right? So, when you wanted to do some big job, you need good tool. (DT) So, you can’t function with handwritings. You need typewriter. You can’t function with a typewriter. You need computer. (DT) And you cannot function with limited small computer. But you need huge capacity computer. You know? (DT) So. (DT) So, if you have them, you can work. If you don’t, you can’t work. (DT) And that’s the why the relevant of seeking Buddhahood. Really. And the Tibetan Buddhism will tell you right from the beginning. You say, “Oh, your aim is to become a Buddha.” (DT) But to hell with you. If you don’t, you know need it. Why? Why? Why? You know. My purpose is to seek freedom. Why do I have to become a Buddha? (DT) Development does not rise. (DT) As long as you are seeking freedom for yourself. (DT) The moment you have this so called love and compassion. So called love and compassion. (DT)

1:03:03.3 Then you become committed. (DT) I care for you, so I have to do something for you. (DT) And then you know see how difficult it is to do something. (DT) The best thing to do with the people is. You can’t beat the people up. They’re not. (laughs) They’re not like sheeps or goats or you can’t drive them in one direction and whistle it and drive it. You can’t do that, right? And it’s true. (DT) So, what do you do? You communicate. (DT) The best thing is try to communicate. Right? Try to talk to the people. Try to communicate. (DT) You know, the Buddhas. The considered most important activity of the Buddha is speech activity. Talking. (DT) It’s not the magical powers that the Buddha have shown. (DT) The magical power is magical power. You perform magic and when it’s over, it’s over. (DT) So, Buddha’s message of sharing the Buddha’s thoughts and ideas and developments that he had gained experience is the everlasting message still going on two thousand five hundred years. It’s become a living tradition. That is because of that. It is not dead message or philosophical books that have returned(?) 1:04:55.4 But it becomes a living tradition. It is still carrying today in life. In bones and fleshes. In life. That is because of the message. (DT) If it is written something, it is written down and thus say and tell it and write it down. And the dust. Remaining with dust in the library. And that is. That is not become a living tradition. (DT)

1:06:06.7 ??? said this morning, why don’t you tell the truth? Didn’t you tell me this morning? Yeah. You can tell the truth. .You have to feel it. (DT) If you tell it and wrote it down, it is a written message. (DT) Not a big deal. Millions of them available. (DT) But it is living tradition. And one convince to the other. (DT) One talks to the other. (DT) And the other understands. (DT) And feels. (DT) And make difference to the life. (DT) Then you act. (DT) And that makes a living tradition. (DT) Can you see now? Thank you. (laughs) Yeah, really true. So, that’s why the Buddha’s point is the most you have to get the message. Communicating. And to communicate it to one person, how difficult it is. (DT) Basically, if you have one companion or two companions, whatever it is. One companion you have. You like the companion. You like each other. You agree a lot of things. You are fine with each other. Even then, how difficult to get the message across. (DT) How much hesitation you will take to say certain things. (DT) How many times we go around and around and around to get on a point. Just not to get a certain boom shock or heat or something. How much dancing around we do. (DT) In our life. That’s what we do. You might not have experienced. You just got married yesterday. Doesn’t matter. (laughs) Just joking. (DT) Tell me three years later. (laughs) Just joking.

1:09:01.6 Anyway. So. So, the. So. When you . Very difficult to communicate to one person to another. How difficult it is. Right? Even though you live with the person. You know the person really well. It is your husband. It is your wife. It is your boyfriend. It is your girlfriend. It is your partner. Whatever it maybe. Still, it takes tremendous efforts and attention. (DT) Yeah. Even you get this little message even cross. And you need to have Marjon walking in there and talking to you. You know, that which come gets. To some people. Yeah. May not to all. But anyway, the point is, the bodhisattva’s there to try to bring this experience message to all people. (DT) And forget about the usual difficulties people to people experience. In addition to that, there’s a tremendous amount of a block. (DT) The limitation at your side. The block from other side. (DT) The blocks number one is. What is it? Oh. Just shut down. (DT) You’re not interested. (DT) I don’t even care. What are you talking about it? (DT) Right? Block number two. You may have a little bit of open but tremendous suspicious. (DT) And tremendous hesitation. (DT) Communication gap. (DT) Less understanding. (DT) Wrong understanding. (DT) And all of them there. (DT) Even you get message across, people needs take it. May not take it. If take it, whether they gain any benefit or not get benefit. All of them. (DT) So, there is no question you need the best tool. (DT)

1:12:11.3 So, that’s why you need Buddhahood. (DT) From the Buddhist point of view, that’s best known to the Buddhist. That’s why it’s called Buddhahood. (DT) So, that’s why the relevance comes in. (DT) So, that’s why you buy the ticket. (DT) So, once you buy the ticket. Once you in the train. The train goes in that direction. You get there. (DT) So, that’s what the bodhisattva meant. (DT) Ok? Good. So, I covered bodhisattva with love compassion both together. (DT) But still the love compassion is also, you have to be careful with the feelings. (DT) And with the tremendous feeling you need. (DT) If you don’t feel it, then it’s not good. (DT) It is so important. (DT) And don’t make buzz. What is? Buzz word. (DT) It is so important. Ok? I’m going to stop here. So, let’s say you have the commitment. You have the bodhimind. So, what do you do? (DT) Ok take a break. Ok. Alright. Ok. I’ll make five minute. Ok. Ten, ten, ten. Ten or fifteen minute. Ten fifteen mnute break. Ok. (DT) So, we continuously talking about bodhisattva. Bodhi mind. And there are people who give you bodhisattva vows and bodhisattva. I don’t know whether anybody gives bodhisattva initiation or not. I don’t know. (DT) I never. I don’t know. Maybe somebody doing? Who knows. (DT) There’s bodhisattva vow taking. (DT) And then there’s bodhisattva vow, a very elaborate way of doing too, you know. (DT) And so. I don’t know all this.

1:15:07.5 So, the question really rises, “what makes the person become bodhisattva?” (DT) And that particular mind which really sort of heart felt mind of ultimate compassion and love and seeking the best too. When that mind grows within the individual. It grows in our tiny little fragile human body. It grows there really. It grows. And when it really grows within that, within our mind. Grow in sense, it’s not extra lump grows in your heart level, but the feeling of the mind and the principal mind functioning. And all of them is sort of completely, within this circle and framework and within the influence of that very mind. When it’s become. Then it’s 1:16:13.6 (?) co-rivers(?) and bodhimind grow with you. (DT) And that person then become bodhisattva. (DT) Ok. And the first bodhisattva vow grows as a sort of, not as action form but almost a praying form. (DT) It’s almost praying, “I wish I could do it! I wish I could do it!” Sort of wishing form. You know, really big wish. I wish, I wish, I wish. (DT) A bottomless wish list will come out, you know. (DT) Ok. Then that wish, wish, wish will become. You can’t sit there and wish, I wish, I wishing. You’ve got to do something. (DT) So, then you pick up actions. (DT) And that actions becomes. Then it becomes action oriented bodhimind. Rather than wishing oriented bodhimind. (DT) And both are. Both are, those action oriented and prayer, wishing oriented mind. Both bodhimind are true bodhimind, but it is called relative bodhimind. (DT)

1:18:16.5 The reason why it is called “relative bodhimind” because it’s dealing with relativity, rather than absolute. (DT) And when the person becomes familiar or encounter or one-ness with the absolute truth, then the bodhimind will also become absolute bodhimind. (DT) Can you push that curtain a little bit to the side so that air can come. Cause you open the window but then the air blocked by the curtain. So, the Mr. Hoberman sees the curtain blowing. Jokes. I always play with him. He doesn’t mind it. Right? Thank you. Ok. Now, what kind of action recommended to bodhimind. I’m sorry, not bodhimind, bodhisattvas. (DT) Ok. So, even you’re not bodhisattva, these are the same thing you can do. (DT) So, this is recommended, like six paramitas. Or six perfections. (DT) Ok. Perfection number one is generosity. (DT) So, you don’t have a problem with generosity. Right? (DT) Do we? (DT)

Audience: No

GR: No. Thank you. Perfection with generosity. Perfection with morality. (DT) Ok. We may not have problem with that either. (DT) Perfection with patience. Perfection with enthusiasm. And perfection with concentration. (DT) And perfection of wisdom. (DT) Alright. So, which way we want to talk. Up or down? Let’s talk backwards today. (DT)

1:21:03.7 Backwards. Ok. So, the. (laughs) He’s laughing. (laughs) I don’t mean that way. Ok? (laughs) I’m sorry. Alright. Wisdom, we talked already this morning. By question of analyzes. And keep on getting your name, forgetting again.

Audience: Naomi

GR: Naomi. Sound like Japanese to me. Naomi. It’s Jewish name. Sure. Yeah. But.

Naomi:

GR: I think the Japanese connection in that. Right? Naomi. Naomi-san. So, with the question, we really talked a lot about wisdom in the morning. (DT) Still the wisdom is not limited to a knowing of emptiness. (DT) The wisdom. I mean every single thing that we pick up. Every single thing that we do. Doing wisely is a wisdom. (DT) Yeah. True. It’s wisdom. The wisdom, whatever doing wisely. Whatever you think is best for you. Whatever you think is the best thing to do. Whatever you can understand the best. Whatever you can apply the best of understanding in your life, it is the wisdom. (DT) And one important thing is, discrimination of wisdom. Discriminating wisdom. (DT) Wisdom that picks up; it is good and it is bad. (DT) And wisdom that picks up it is good for me and it is bad for me. (DT)

1:24:08.6 And that it is important wisdom one needed. (DT) And another thing is, but knowing alone is not enough. (DT) And you have to know it properly (DT) You have to know it thoroughly (DT) You need to concentrate. (DT) Because you can’t go half-hearted. (DT) You need to concentrate tremendously whatever you think is good to you. It’s before you act you have to concentrate. (DT) And you know when people tells me, I would like to sleep over it. (DT) And I like it. (DT) Because they think over. They concentrate over. They meditate over. (DT) Yet, it should not be too long. It shouldn’t take five years to meditate on. Is that the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do. (laughs) (DT) So, the wisdom. Not only the wisdom of knowing. Wisdom of concentration. (DT) Once you concentrated. Once you understand. Once you concentrated, then you have to act. (DT) You cannot be lazy. (DT) You know, laziness is a terrible thing to do. You know. Really. (DT) And if you spend your life in laziness, you have no idea how the days and time goes. (DT) And before you do anything, there’ll be knock on your door. (DT) And they say, “Sir. Your car is ready.” (laughs) So. So, then that’s a problem. So, don’t let laziness take over you. You need to. You need to act. You need to function. Once you’re convinced. (DT) And that also not half-heartedly. (DT) Half-heartedly will never work. So, you must go full speed with full enthusiastic. (DT)

1:27:03.9 That is the enthusiasm of wisdom. (DT) And when you enthusiastically you go with it, you will encounter with a lot of resistance. With a lot of problems. (DT) And you can’t brush them out. (DT) You need patience. (DT) You need persistence. (DT) Right? You need persistence. You need patience. That is the. The patience of wisdom. (DT) Right? So, patience is also not enough. You need discipline. (DT) And if you are not disciplined, it is impossible to achieve. (DT) So, consistent application of wisdom on whatever you are doing. (DT) I’m not talking about the high level of the bodhisattva level. I’m talking about our everyday life. (DT) A consistent discipline. (DT) And that’s what you need. (DT) Otherwise, you’ll do everything tomorrow. (DT) Yeah. And that is your morality. (DT) of the wisdom. (DT) Of the wisdom. And not only you have the idea. Not only, you have focused. Not only you have the drive. Not only you have the patience. And not only you have the discipline. You be generous. You have to share with the people. You have to take people with you. (DT)
