You have a very good and interesting session the first Tuesday with Aura the second with Sandy in the third with (?) Rimpoche (Rimpoche laughs) so you had a good session and I am sure by sharing their personal experience and particularly when you have difficulty difficulties and you encounter with the difficulties how to handle all these are I’’m sure quite useful and I’’m sure you have a lot of questions too what I did is I went to Holland that’’s the Netherlands not Holland Michigan the Netherlands in Europe and I had ten days Lam Rim teaching (blank spot on tape) now let me put it this way the first day when I arrived there on Friday that night they have this new Jewel Heart and they opened the new Jewel Heart so that is an organization of the Jewel Heart (?) in Holland and it was about a little over a hundred people it was a very nice room may be bigger than this and this was a hundred people easily fits plus two huge long tables plus kitchen plus office all of them there so it is much bigger than this. So there’’s about a hundred people that night and we had the opening done on the Friday and Saturday and Sunday we had a weekend teaching on I think it is on death and dying so because of the impermanent part of the Lam Rim we took over there and two days on death and dying and then Monday onwards we had a Lam Rim teaching so it was a whole day Lam Rim teaching ten to twelve two to five seven to nine so we did the Lam Rim teaching and at the end of the Lam Rim teaching two days of Heruka initiation and then one day teaching on the Vajrayana basic Vajrayana structure which I did not do good at all because after the Heruka initiation that we did in a whole day then my feeling was I thought I had done all my work and the day when I was teaching the Vajrayana I don’’t remember anything so we just wasted the day and that’’s what had happened and so it went on very well and there are a number of when I was there last time it was two and a half years ago451

In the Jewel Heart there’’s only about eight or nine ten people sort of regularly coming is there and when I was there the number goes up but regularly it is eight or nine there now it’’s like forty five people coming sort of meeting there regularly and the schedule will be a little surprised us because the way and how they meeting is very very intense I do not know how they manage what they does is Monday they meet seven thirty to nine thirty and what they call it introductory group so the new people who are interested in Buddhism and all this and all the seniors together they have this introductory group and mostly what they discuss is the three principles of the path and they does that Monday seven thirty to nine thirty then Tuesday eight to ten Lam Rim group people who are doing the Lam Rim all the seniors plus who are studying Lam Rim they meets Tuesday eight to ten then Wednesday they meet eight to ten Thanga painting classes there is a Tibetan going and Thanga painting classes they have eight to ten every Wednesday and then Thursday night they meet eight to nine that is general meditation Ed Hopperman is the person who leads the meditation.711

Jewel Heart Holland growth and schedule

And what really happens is most of the senior students don’’t show up on Thursday night because it is (?) Meditation Ed goes there instead. And when I had a meeting with the group the Ed complains because he is the only person working on Thursday night (Rimpoche laughs) so anyway so Thursday night they have eight to nine they do not meet on Friday Saturdays they meet ten in the morning till two in the afternoon that is first Saturday of the month and then second Saturday of the month the seniors have a meet and sometimes they pick up a few Lam rim’’s what is this I can’’t read it (Rimpoche confers with the audience) ten to one is the Lam rim meeting and one to two is the business meeting okay so that’’s what most every five days a week they meet and what they do is what they really do is they pick up a subject they take this tape or or they tape record the recorded tape or combined with the Liberation in Palm and the three principles and then they put them together and pick up a point and everybody had read and did their homework and they bring back and they talk and try to make the group less than fifteen but they’’re not possible to do it they have to break a lot so they talk discuss and the problems that your face in your life with your family problems difficulties and the problems the society faces in Dutch society in general and they bring them together and bring the Lam rim points and the point here try to talk them together and they don’’t do one sort of you know one teaching another lesson but they all to bring together and talk and discuss and try to be helpful and that’’s how they maintaining the it’’s almost becoming like a community of it’’s own and try to work together and try to be helpful to each other and try to be and maintain the jewel heart itself in that way. They also have categories the categories call it preliminary categories and the junior categories and then the junior another one and then Lam rim and then goes in the senior category the seniors are totally responsible above that they have a board too they call it which we don’’t have at all so they call it the senior group the senior group are responsible for they do there whatever they have to do that’’s what they do and they’’re really doing very well so I thought I wanted to make sure how they meet and what they do and I wanted to make sure and I may tell to Kathy to check once again because they tell me they going to send a schedule totally but they’’re going to change the schedule in September so they’’re waiting for that before I report tonight I wanted to make sure the information what I have is correct so I had Kathy to call and reach them today so that is the right. So that’’s what they do and so the jewel heart Holland sends all their regards to everybody each and everybody (?) And there’’s a tremendous improvement in the individuals and group and senior group and the board they call that board you know there’’s a big box for them anyway so last couple of times when I went there there is a little rocking the boat in the board (Rimpoche laughs) this time it was absolutely smooth really very smooth so I did not make any change in their board system at all what they do is every second year we change the members or something whenever I go there and they also wait for the people who are promoted from the different group to the different group is during when I’’m visiting there sort of what they do that1306

Jewel Heart New York

So this time they’’re very smooth so I did not make any change at all in the board except they wanted one more person which they themselves recommended so I picked that up. And though she is in junior group but she puts a lot of time there almost sits there all the time so they wanted her to be on the board that’’s fine so that’’s the Jewel Heart Holland and incidentally his Holiness going to go to Holland on June fifth and they invited the Jewel Heart people to try to function it and do all these things so thirty of them are the executive group of his Holiness’’s committee he is going to stay there half a day for (?) For half day on June fifth so that is what is happening in Holland and so then the last weekend I was in New York meeting with our usual New York group and of course it’’s summer in New York and a weekend of holiday so we expecting most of the people will not be there but there’’s quite a lot of them I forgot to count how many there thirty or thirty five we saw there in New York and we had two days and Saturday night it was selected group that was the Bodhichitta group and Sunday we have that New York group meeting and they’’re doing fine too so they are not so well organized or anything but they’’re doing fine there there they are doing their business so that’’s fine and so my here back and before I go ahead and all this and during the Dalai Lama’’s visit it has been very very successful really very good and I was told his Holiness himself is very happy and everywhere everybody is really happy and very appreciate it and we’’ve been very fortunate and we also have a number of people put a lot a labor in that a lot of work and I must say all of them went out of the way to work hard and we have been very good. And we all sort of totally went out of the way to sort of to make it success and to (?) And on the whole the achievement and being helpful to the people serving his Holiness and serving ourselves all very great everything was very successful particularly the Tibetan community and the Dharmasala his Holiness’’s organization is extremely pleased particularly with the Tibetan Art Festival they’’re very appreciative of it they even wanted to write their official report in that they wanted to write about this art of course all activity of his Holiness but the art part his Holiness could not go to the art place but they’’re very happy because they really wanted to write about it particularly and the voice of America actually had covered in life from here and broadcast over Tibet this Art Festival I can do only by the evening because quite late because everybody’’s picking up and then they wanted the Tibetan language broadcasting came up and so by the time when I walked around and try to say but almost everything packed and I started saying that earlier there were something there and the guy said please say it was here you know he turned out the thing and it was here so as though we been talking it was there but it was not there it was all packed and gone (Rimpoche laughs) so anyway it went on live broadcast over Tibet and apparently people are very happy in Tibet that’’s what we heard and at the same time of course people did a lot of energy and everybody got totally exhausted as well as the Jewel Heart put its own resources out and we’’re also exhausted financially so therefore I would like to remind you once again and those who have been pledging for Jewel Heart so please do remember pledging again I think we have neglected for the last two or three months because everybody has been busy in that1930

And those who have not been pledging and so if you would like to pledge it is also very good it doesn’’t matter there is no number if you want to pledge a dollar a month or you want to pledge a million dollars a month it doesn’’t matter but as long as you pledge you being part of it and all this it is important so I would like to remind everybody because we are quite exhausted over our financial resources. 2012

Robert’’s Poem

And also we received a number of letters expressing appreciation from various individuals as well as organizations and quite a lot of them we are getting from all over the country and hopefully we will be able to put them together and make available for people to read it here quite a lot of them and among them at that time I also received a nice poetry now I don’’t want to say nice you will hear it poetry written by Robert and he give me that time it was very nice and I really wanted to wanted him to read that night but that night he just give me that night so I couldn’’t read I don’’t have glasses I couldn’’t read so couldn’’t make you read that night and so I hope you read now what you wroted that and after a little while (Rimpoche laughs) and his appreciation he wrote that and I hope you’’ll be able to share with everybody I still have something I forgot. Oh yeah a lot of letters and there are two letters three letters from the office of Tibet expressing there appreciation I mean three of them and one also sort of thanking the donations that Jewel Heart give to his Holiness and so we normally in the Buddhist way we didn’’t look how much we have we just want to give that much we just give that much (Rimpoche laughs) so might not be the normal American business style but I think it is a good opportunity and it is connected with everybody and go to his Holiness and he doesn’’t go to have lunch so it goes to good cause and so I think it’’s a great opportunity for we did that and I think Robert would you like to read it and I would like to....

Robert: Well I might say I try to write three or four poems a day and originally I only wrote this for myself and then I looked at it and then I thought well it looks like a tree you know and then I thought Gehlek Rimpoche would like it actually so I gave it to him and then I wasn’’t sure if he liked it so I gave it to several of my Dharma friends because he didn’’t get the English right away you know he was looking at and so I thought and I wrote it because I felt really inspired by the White Tara initiation and then I won’’t get long-winded but I met Gehlek Rimpoche back in the old days while he was coming here I’’m one of the rocky boats in some ways and other ways I don’’t change at all so I’’m a little bit embarrassed to read this if there are people here that are new are the people here that are new to Buddhism and don’’t understand guru devotion and all that kind of stuff but theres new people it’’s a real peculiar paradox to find someone who is a spiritual friend and imagine that all the enlightened beings have melted into his heart and that somehow your own higher self or Buddha self or the possibility of that has melted into your heart and really it’’s a trip and all the great poets that I know whether it’’s Robert Bly or Ginsberg who are completely opposite have hung out with Tibetans and have been influenced by Lamas and it’’s a real thing for artists to try to engage what are they talking about so a lot of you might be bored by this poem and I’’m embarrassed about that and the other ones who don’’t know anything may not understand but I’’m not embarrassed to have a great relationship with Gehlek Rimpoche that like anybody here who has a relationship with Gehlek Rimpoche knows that he meets you where ever you are at and maybe nobody else understands your relationship with him as spiritual friend and me being a spiritual friend to him trying to do that so anyway I won’’t I don’’t know if you understood that but he asked me to read this and so I didn’’t think this was ever going to happen and it’’s a little embarrassing and I know we are all trying to be spiritual and it’’s a difficult task okay so I’’m sorry had to say that so I’’ve been influenced by Robert Bly a lot and Ginsberg has kind of had an influence on me it’’s really difficult to be around these guys very close...

Rimpoche: so we thought we would share that (?) So now we’’ll continue what we been doing I do not know whether you people have any questions left because as far as I remember any way where did I stop Gloria you are the one who was keeping that program there.

(Inaudible) I think if I understand correctly remember correctly I’’ve just finished the common with the medium level and almost going over to the Mahayana path that’’s where I left you mean to say already we went into the Oh I see okay at the common with the medium level oh okay (Rimpoche confers with audience then he begins to speak in Tibetan) 3507

Okay so what we have just covered the sensual gluttony thing has been covered and now we are onto the next verse right? Can somebody read that next first loudly you do that

audience: and empower me with mindfulness and alertness formed from thoughts ultimately pure I may live in accord with the holy Dharma the ways leading to personal liberation.

Rimpoche: (he speaks Tibetan) so we have been basically talking human life is important and how we can get it we can talk about embrace the human life and the difficult to find and also for difficulty to find we are talk about it from the causal point of view how difficult to find from the example point of view how difficult to find from the reality point of view how difficult to find an example we have this funny example of blind tortoise coming five hundred years up and caughting them making the yoke which the swimming over that this sort of funny example which everybody remembers it is because it is too funny so that so from the causal point of view we say how difficult to find so from the causal point of view when you say how difficult to find we say the basic fundamental cause to give human birth as we said perfect morality so that’’s what we’’re talking about it remember so when you talk about the perfect morality what are we talking about it now this is the point .here (he speaks Tibetan)3739

Buddhist Ethics

So what we are talking about ethics ethics of a life actually ethics what can we do what can we go what we can not do what is morality we are talking about it so I think it is basically we all ways it is not the usual understanding of morals and morality I don’’t think we are talking about that and ethics of the individual what sort of motivation what sort of attitude you carry what sort of behavior and what particularly watching our mind actually there is two kind of what Buddhist call mental faculties I mean we call it the mental faculty I don’’t know it’’s some kind of sub mind small subtle mind we call it a faculty rather than principle mind itself one is remembrance and the other is awareness there are fifty two of them sort of you know each one of those emotions so we label them you know like one of them labeled as remembrance and one of them is awareness there are fifty two of those different emotions. So and the most important thing is the remembering and the awareness so remembering and awareness are normally sort of watch our mind and our usual habit of negativities is absolutely in our habitual pattern and the negativities if we’’re not careful if we’’re not watching even we are watching even we are acknowledging but sometimes it is become difficult for ourselves for ourselves to pull out of those negative experience that we go through our habitual experience will tell you immediately if you dislike something you get angry and if you like something and are comfortable we get attachment each one of those anger and attachment separately or collectively capable of bringing all other negativities jealous hatred all of them and even your worst try to be mean what ever but that might be a little difficult to come up people like us but basically if you don’’t watch it they are there absolutely they combine together they will come and even you watch it you will notice and you’’ll try to pull back and you can’’t and you will lose you pull and push and pull and push all of them we have in our habitual patterns if you look in our daily life you will see that unless you are free of anger attachment and hatred we do have that so why we are getting those because we are so used to it this is our habit and what does that do and that brings negativities that is immoral immoral does not have to be sexually immoral alone the immoral here is getting angry getting jealous getting attached and all this negativities when you bring in the pure being and it is become immoral and at least to me and to the Buddha’’s way of talking it is immoral but not really have to be sexual behavior so (he speaks Tibetan) when it becomes immoral it becomes unethical right it’’s called unethical right is unethical so what does this unethical do and that very unethical every time we generate it and we do have a karma produced and not to have good future life not to produce the good human quality life so to overcome those to make sure to guarantee that and you really not only have to be have to have awareness but remembrance together the remembering if you do not be careful our habitual patterns will pull this way and we have to pull out and go on this way (he speaks Tibetan) so for this to read and particularly I don’’t know the third one what they say in English remembrance and awareness and what else (he confers with the audience) the third one is anyway sort of put in between in Tibetan we call it (?) Which means if you directly translated it is sort of behaving yourself sort of thing but it doesn’’t really do well so every translator has sort of push them and shovel them around sort of (going?) out of the pure thoughts and things like that they shovel them in there so that is exactly what happens4544

So the basic question of cause of getting a good human life is sort of bow down to these ethical points and actually pulling ourselves away from the negativity though we call it direct cause I’’m simply saying that we calling it direct cause to take rebirth in human life but actually to make the person sacred to make the person’’s life pure to develop the individual so think this is the key which is why they call it ethics it is really a true Buddhist ethics4707

Protecting yourself from the negativities and if you allow yourself without any control ready to take over by the negativities then it becomes unethical we call it an ethical right? Unethical so the question very often rises what is the Buddhist ethics and all blah blah blah blah but sometimes it might not be proper to but sometimes it sort of goes out very easily here so it is very easy to say very easy to read it and easy understand so when we’’re talking about ethics here and that’’s what we are all talking about any problems with that?

Audience: (inaudible)

Rimpoche: that is an additional but just now with very simply we just leaving out any Mahayana inputs yes remembering and awareness and then of course it is born out of what (Rimpoche confers with the audience) no if you look before that if you look at the word before that what does that say? No no before that sensual gluttony something so the pure thoughts what we’’re talking about this second word that pure thought (he speaks Tibetan) the mind of pure what does it say pure so ultimately pure what he’’s talking about it the thought is seeking the liberation yes liberation which is liberating the individual from the samsaric things so you have to link this particular word here is above that word so that when they say pure thoughts and that pure thoughts not referring to Bodhimind or the Bodhichitta or love and compassion but is referring to (silence on tape file and find pain can) something which you can apply on anything the scientist can apply on the research right and anybody can apply on anything right? the drivers can apply on driving so anybody can do that so why they are referring to the born out of a pure thoughts so that was try to bring it if you are seeking that pure liberation liberation you’’re seeking the liberation that mind at the labeled as a pure thoughts why is it pure it is not seeking some kind of samsaric Rockefeller style of life it is not it is seeking a total freedom from the suffering pains and the problems and the cause of them sort of that is the label there so that is why they labeled as pure thoughts is that clear to you now? Makes help or you have more questions? (He speaks Tibetan) and that pure thoughts is you have to refer back towards and say that if you’’re seeking that and how do you do it how do you do it actually A) the karmic thing we talked B) how to handle it it is only two of this mental faculties use them as much as you can two the mental faculties actually awareness and remembrance sometimes even if you’’re aware but you don’’t remember even you remember you don’’t have the alertness and awareness and that is a problem can you wait for a minute please (he speaks Tibetan) so that remembering and that awareness what you bring to you is you really have to focus that liberating yourself did they say that? yes that’’s what it is so they’’re liberating yourself that’’s what they wanted they wanted the remembrance and that remembrance and awareness will focus the self liberation I mean the holy Dharma blah blah blah is the way of putting it but self liberation and how do you self liberate yourself self liberating is not depend on somebody else to tell you what to do but by yourself cutting out of the negativities and putting yourself within the perfect positive karmic action right the karmic action is something very strange if you pull out of the negative karmic action you’’d get into a positive karmic action and if you pull out of the positive karmic action you get into a negative karmic action it is more or less black and white though there is grey but not so much I was accused of not having gray for many years right (Rimpoche laughs)5421

Sandy and Aura used to accuse me all the time everything is black-and-white there’’s no gray (Rimpoche laughs) but there is a karmic really like that so there is a gray area definitely but but it is either negative or positive the grays are not so much valuable with us because of the motivations and other mental faculties emotions what you may call it so the positive negative emotions they took over and they started things off so it’’s almost black-and-white rather than not so much gray in it so pulling yourself from the negative activities and actually if you keep on pulling yourself out of the negativities and you really don’’t have to push yourself in the positive too much it’’s really true and if you try to push yourself in the positive so much and carry mala in hand and do you know sit twenty four hours up and the mambo jumbo everything blah blah blah you may go but what will happen is if you are in not pulling yourself out of the negativities you may be doing something in the lip saying some mantras yantras tantras whatever you may be saying it but in the mala may be going but however the negativities going on around and this is the very very important point people overlook a lot of people will say we need purification we need this we need that sure you do but the most important thing is watching here that is the actual self liberation that’’s really where it is if you read the Kadampa Lama stories and I don’’t remember whether it was Drum Rimpoche or Atisha, one of them and somebody is doing circum-ambulation on stupa you know they are going around and either drum Rimpoche or this I forgot one of the say hey what are you doing well I’’m doing a circum-ambulation and he said oh that’’s very nice and I wish you do a good Dharma practice rather than that. It is Atisha? Okay so then somebody else is doing the Vajrasatva Mantra saying purification and doing and goes by and what you doing so I’’m doing Vajra Satva purification oh that’’s very nice but I wish you do a good Dharma practice okay then somebody else is doing a Mandala offering you know all the stories are there in the Liberation in your Palm or something what is it liberation in Palm of yours or whatever they called 5736

Liberation in the Palm of your hand it’’s all there so then they said that’’s a great thing but I wish you would do a good Dharma practice and this is how the Kadampa Lama at the beginning that level is how the essence of the Buddhas way of self liberation by yourself is taught to the Tibetans by that example so it is an example is still absolutely relevant in the West extremely relevant and particularly among those of us who claims to be Buddhist practitioner who likes to carry a mala around who like to make it look like slightly different who like to keep a little extra hair long or the beard long or whatever and who would like to look and identify in a different way and we really do need that and there are a number of another person group of people who probably have their mental attitude may probably be very arrogant and is beyond understanding but yet it is mala in hand and says a tremendous amount of mantras you will see that all the time particularly among the western Buddhist groups particular that those who have been earlier in the Tibetan Buddhist practice there are a lot of them there and if you try to see their mind their attitude how they approach and they always arrogant and they always have an agenda of there own where ever you pull it they will try to pull their agenda on and all this you see it however you see them all reading books saying a lot of mantras spending a lot of meditations and all this actually it is a corruption in Dharma practice I’’m sorry maybe it’’s a too strong a word to say but it is what happened is the practice does not come from the heart and action but it becomes showpiece or presentation or exhibition but rather than making effects to the individual and the way and how you do it just watch how your emotions going it is so simple as this attachment and jealous anger and hatred how it goes towards different people what happened simply watch that and they will show you exactly how we are function if you let it go it will go it will build a big castle in the air do all sorts of things if you let it go then do it right? And if you don’’t watch it and if you follow that thought and you’’re going to pick up a lot of different actions which makes everybody difficult we all do that all the time ourselves that’’s how I see myself so if you if you have the awareness and you put a full stop on that by that awareness and if you don’’t have the remembrance putting it up you say yes and then you go back tomorrow Ah blah blah blah you know the footsteps never stops and the footsteps after footstep, period after period 3, 4 , 5, 6, 7 pages period will go does not make sense in English 10214

Using self liberation to liberate self (Key Low Voice Change)

You can keep on putting that and still page running continuously that will happen and that should be cut out by the remembrance sometimes it is hard it is hard it makes you cry true but if you think carefully and long on it is better that you use that remembrance to carry on the awareness which will cut out all the negativity and the actions that you even your thoughts come out the actions you pull them back even they acted out already and try to pull back even if it’’s gone two weeks ago or three weeks ago or ten months ago but try to pull it back by this remembrance and by this awareness and if you keep on doing that and there will be a time that you don’’t let yourself lose the control of those to that emotional controls and then time comes even before those thought arises you know it it’’s coming up and so this the porcupine rising the other way around is started rising the opposite direction Oh these strange thoughts of thought of jealous thought of hatred, thought of this, thought of selfish comes under any pretense of self-respect self-restraint and you name it or anything but it comes in that manner so before it comes you’’ll be able to see them and watch them then really the opportunity comes even the Ram Dass will sometimes give a lecture and saying that what did he say so if you have the awareness then you said you emotions that big monster type of emotions which crush you and you will be able to see them little (?) that is yiddish right it’’s sort of a little fellow comes to the door and knock you say hello and you say hi I haven’’t seen you for a while and come in and have a cup of tea and that really happens that really happens if you’’ve been able to build that awareness that awareness true that’’s really true and if you’’ve been able to build up a that awareness and if the remembrance can keep on that awareness alive and act even if you lose it does not matter even if you lost for years you try to pull back months after a week after days after hours after doesn’’t matter but the period will be shorter and shorter and after some time the period even before those things arises you alert so then it’’s really the beginning of equal level dealing with this negative emotions and not only equal but a little bit you have got an edge over a little edge a little edge over so then you can deal easily and at about that time you will be able to see some of those emotions are may be useful with the control if you handle it and some of them are totally useless but you can only think at that level not at where the emotions make you swing you up sometimes high above the clouds and sometimes low below the sea so that period you cannot that’’s what it is the true key is the remembrance and awareness and the awareness is there but if you don’’t have the remembrance you will lose them again until you pick up somewhere else and go on you acknowledge (?) Boom gone so that’’s you know to keep it sort of intact the remembrance this are the way how you use self liberation self liberation here keeping ethics here is a really meaning keeping yourself away from the negativity10724

Keeping away the negative actions is keeping your thoughts away from the negative emotions that’’s the only thing the first thing is negative emotions the second thing is actions followed by the actor that’’s really what it is so the root of cut may not be the root of root but basic way of cutting is at that thought level that emotional level that negative emotions and the way and how you handle is I think that’’s what it is and that is verse tells you the pure thought born out of a pure thought and blah blah blah and all this are the blah blah blah but the main key is two actions two mental faculties how to apply how to make use it that is it! I’’m finished I have nothing more to say and I must say I’’m very happy to be back very nice to see you all here and when did you get here by the way? (Rimpoche addresses and audience member) Oh from Tennessee or what are you going to stay here for awhile or what going back tonight oh this weekend holiday you came up here oh that’’s right all right so nice to see you everybody and thank you you’’re beautiful and it is in our newsletter too okay so what else anything else? He is going to go to India on the first after that he’’ll be doing that the nine stage of meditation to announce today? I have requested (?) To do a meditation course here based on the Shamantha nine stage of development so we thought of the doing it on Thursdays but he first is going to go to India and when he gets back and that would probably be end of June or at least July or something so that’’s just basically probably we should say by July so that at least people will have an idea so by the first Thursday of July right we should say something about that so I don’’t know how long he’’s going to stay there two three weeks he says so India two three weeks so so that’’s it so okay (Rimpoche begins to chant in Tibetan)
