The Concept of Emptiness

The concept of emptiness is at the heart of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, mediation, practice and realization. Despite the common meaning of the term, in Buddhism emptiness does not mean nothingness. Far from being a nihilistic view of reality, emptiness defines how things exist, not inherently from their own nature, but interdependently and impermanently, still subject to cause and effect. Realization of this true nature of reality is a cause for enlightenment. Known as the wisdom teachings the exploration, understanding and experience of emptiness is a principle goal of Tibetan Buddhism.
